Since they've cut the field to 40, we saw field sizes increase as the season went on for a third straight year now. Don't get me wrong, I think there will be much greater things in store with Jim France at the helm, but that has absolutely zero to do with the field size increasing. 7. David posted: 09.11.2018 - 6:18 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Although the heat in Vegas is less than ideal for drivers and everyone else at that track this time of year, fortunately the race is not in Richmond this week or the race would surely be postponed. Depending on the impact of the hurricane, next week's Richmond race could be in jeopardy and brings up the question of when it could be rescheduled. Obviously there are no open weekends between now and Homestead, and no matter what extraordinary circumstances occur it's hard to picture NASCAR making Richmond the 36th race and juggling all the 3-race playoff "brackets" accordingly. 11. David posted: 09.11.2018 - 8:12 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @12 Of course, but that was in the days before the late-season schedule had to be segmented into 3-race blocs. Also, would NASCAR really take away Homestead's glamour date as the big finale and replace it with Richmond if Hurricane Florence causes next week's race to be postponed due to damage? Or would Richmond get Homestead's date and the final race @ Miami moved back a week which then puts it after Thanksgiving? The 2001 championship was not in any doubt at Loudon, Gordo had already clinched, but in 2018 the final race of the season is by definition for all the marbles and I wouldn't be surprised if Homestead demands (or is contractually bound) to host the grand finale. 14. Corey posted: 09.11.2018 - 8:43 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The playoffs are irrelevant. If Hurricane Florence makes Richmond a no go, it will be moved and the chase will be adjusted accordingly. This is something that I'm sure the tracks fully understand. I do see the possibility of Homestead moving back a week for Richmond, but that's it. 15. With the team shutting down, I imagine key employees will begin to leave before the season's over, and most people's focus will be on their 2019 jobs rather than winning a title this year. Plus, I don't think Gibbs wants them there, and they would probably do what they have to to make sure they don't get beaten by their affiliate again. 33. Anonymous posted: 09.15.2018 - 8:34 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I have a solution that might work for Nascar to stop losing fans, dump the chase and go back to going all year to determine a champion. From 1975 to 2003 Nascar had 1 points system, that was 28 years. Since the chase points system began in 2004 they have changed it in 2007, 2011, 2014 and in 2017. That's 5 times they changed it in 14 years. As far as the importance of winning goes, Nascar could give 40 points to the winner plus 3 for winning the race and 2nd would get 39 points and go down by 1 point per position. Give a bonus point for leading a lap and another bonus point for leading the most laps. They could even give the pole winner a bonus point as some other racing series do. Last thing do away with stage racing and just throw cautions when they are needed, instead of stage cautions. That's just my 2 cents on how Nascar could possibly fix their sport. 44. Ryan posted: 09.15.2018 - 9:06 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @43 Someone posted a blog a couple of months ago that had a good points system if you wanted to give points during the race for drivers running up front and do away with the stages similar to your idea maybe it was yours. You're no where near alone, fans have been preaching to the choir about this since the inception of The Chase. 45. OangeWaffle43 posted: 09.15.2018 - 9:16 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @43 I think they should do those things plus raise the current cars 2 inches off the ground... Even though they would be more likely to flip in wrecks, the racing will be closer because it will be more about the driver rather than aero. 46. Spen posted: 09.15.2018 - 9:36 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Anonymous: The Latford system was the sixth system we used from '62-'75. 47. possum posted: 09.15.2018 - 11:47 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @46 - argueably there were 3 point systems in that span: points based on prize money, points based on race distance, and points based on finishing position + laps completed. The weighting factors changed from year to year. The first points system was designed to encourage promoters to post higher prize money (thus making their race more important); the second rewarded the builders of "big" tracks; and I'm not sure what the rationale was for the third :-) Bear in mind that for all of these the actual championship was little more than a trophy - the Latford system came in when Winston put up the money to make the championship something worth having, and it became important to have a "fair" system. 48. JSPorts posted: 09.15.2018 - 12:42 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I still believe championships are significant from that era, though. Even if the system changed, they still awarded the drivers & teams who were able to rise to the top, often at the biggest moments. 49. possum posted: 09.15.2018 - 3:16 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) @48 - yes and no. The problem is, back when the money for winning the championship was small, many drivers didn't attempt to run the whole season (David Pearson being the obvious example, since he only ran more-or-less the whole season 4 times (finishing 3rd, 1st, 1st, 1st)). Being able to "rise to the top" isn't as meaningful when the top isn't very high up. 50. Corey posted: 09.15.2018 - 9:55 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The 2018 version of the playoffs will be vastly different from the 2017 version. Round 1: Round 1 gets a complete overhaul. 2017 saw the opening rounds of Loudon, Chicagoland and Dover. In 2018 Loudon lost its second date to Las Vegas, while Chicagoland was moved out to make way for Richmond. Dover and Charlotte were swapped, however the new roval course will replace the traditional fall oval race. Round 2: 2018 will see Dover as the first race instead of Charlotte while Talladega and Kansas remain unchanged. Round 3: Martinsville, Texas and Phoenix all retain their spot in the 3rd round. Phoenix however has undergone a makeover, with the start/finish line being moved to the area that had been traditionally been between Turn 2 and the dogleg. Championship: Once again the championship will be decided in Homestead, where the champion will then take his family to Walt Disney World. 51. Some of these systems, especially 1973 were quite complicated. The actual system is (beside of the stages) in my eyes the fairest and simplest system. Last regular rank of the race gets 1 point, all other ranks additional 1 point per gap, the winner additional 3 points. The last years there were only adjustements for different car counts per race. 53. Before we see Kahne Elliott on Kasey Kahne's page ranting how Regan only got there via attrition and it would have been better had Kahne been behind the wheel. Kyle Busch was a lap down in 26th after he spun with about 30 laps to go. These cautions and attrition allowed him to charge (with fresher tires) to a three wide finish to 7th, though he didn't pass Ryan Blaney and Aric Almirola, he was coming hard. This race was must needed for non-playoff standings. He is now over a full points lead over Kevin Harvick once again. Brad Keselowski wins his third straight races, and these three races were HUGE for him and Roger Penske. First Southern 500 win for Brad, and first for Roger in over 40 years, as well as sweeping the weekend with the Xfinity series win at Darlington! First win in Cup for both at Indianapolis. And now, Roger wins #500 across all racing series combined with Brad winning here at Vegas. This is also the first time Vegas hosted a second date, and the first race of the playoffs and Brad gets to avoid worrying about what happens at the Roval race at Charlotte (the unexpected). Say what you will, but these past 3 races have been HUGE for Brad Keselowski, the #2 team and Roger Penske for historical references. Also to note, Brad Keselowski has yet to lead the most laps in any series (Cup and Xfinity), all season long. Someone mentioned earlier on this page that the #42 has never led a lap at Las Vegas? Kyle Larson ended up leading 24 laps, finishing 2nd. How about that? 233. Anthony posted: 09.16.2018 - 8:42 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) J.J. David posted: 09.17.2018 - 12:53 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) The heat had to be a factor in the dismal attendance, and if NASCAR really believes that the NFL is cutting into what's left of attendance & viewership on Sundays then this race really should have been held on Saturday night when temps were at least a few degrees cooler. I realize that would back everything up a day on a 4-race weekend at this track but either the K&N race could be on a Wednesday (is that SO much different than racing on a Thursday?) or could double up with the trucks on Thursday; 2 races for the price of 1 couldn't hurt attendance any. As to the NFL excuse: 1. We never heard that reasoning prior to NASCAR's current 15-year decline. 2. It is a very convenient excuse to explain drop-offs which have more to do with non-NFL factors, and moving races off of Sunday afternoons would remove that convenient excuse and force NASCAR to confront the real issues, which it clearly does not wish to do (or the decline would not have been as long as 15 years). Even though NFL ratings are sinking too (though not as fast as NASCAR's - yet), those folks don't seem to be coming over to racing. 256.
