Timmy Hill makes his first start of the 2016 season, doing a one-off in the #98 Chevy in place of Cole Whitt. Tony Stewart is on the verge of being eliminated from the Chase unless he pulls off a great run here. His #14 Chevy has new colors this week as he is racing a brown car to promote Nature's Bakery Double Chocolate Brownies. 5. I doubt Stewart-Haas is getting much support from Hendrick anymore as they are a lame-duck satellite and Hendrick won't be pleased they're abandoning them for Ford. So suddenly the Hendrick cars are running better with even Gordon and Kahne in the top ten more, and the Stewart-Haas cars are faltering. Yes, Harvick still won last week, but it was a very RCR-style win where he won a race he wasn't all that competitive in on a late restart without the fastest car. 153. Really dumb reason to stop liking someone, I made that mistake with Jimmie Johnson in the late 2000s (I was only about ten years old though) and never again. Only Johnson could give him a run for his money, but in the end the penalty really hurt the 48. Wanted to give a shoutout to 4 non chasers. Jeff Gordon finally got his 1st top 10 subbing for Dale Jr. in an uneventful day for the 88 team. Ricky Stenhouse had a quietly solid day and ended up just outside the top 10 in 11th. Kasey Kahne continued his strong runs to begin the Chase. Had he been in the Chase, he would've made the round of 12 without issue. And Aric Almirola had a 16th place finish, his best result since Bristol. I honestly find supporting a "manufacturer, screw all drivers who doesn't drive it" bogus. You can support a driver, even if he doesn't drive your Ford, your Dodge, your Chevy or your Toyota. There is a saying: "Nobody likes a winner." I have no idea why the sudden hate for Martin Truex Jr, and why people dislike actual racing rather than getting forced to go through gimmicks of cautions. This is part of the reason why Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart are ready to hang up their helmets, because it's gotten out of hand pretty quickly due to this gimmick, and of course, more reasons also. As for the hate toward Truex, no. Those people trashing him because he's "winning" too much seriously just need to go through rehab. They would race both in the U.S. and other oval tracks around the world, mixed in with a few road courses. Off the top of my head, the ovals at Twin Ring Motegi (Japan), Rockingham (UK), Europseedway Lausitz (Germany), Phaksia (South Africa), Thunderdome (Australia), Sanair (Canada) Ciudad de Rafaela (Argentina), Chiapas (Mexico) and more could make great additions. It makes no sense that drivers like truex or keselowski who have been great in round 1 could be eliminated in this round because of a flat tire or the big one. Sure its that way so to speak in stick and ball sports but thats to account for the variation in scheduling strength. In motorsports there is no scheduling variation, all competitors are competing against each other on the same track in the same week. The chase as configured is just gimmicky schlock and discourages the seasons best team from winning the championship. It would also be way more compelling and reward week after week viewership but thats what the season long points chase did as well and that was deemed inappropriate for the modern casual viewer. The chase insults Nascars core viewership and fan base by essentially saying its ok you didnt watch the other 29 weeks, we dumbed it down for you. The funny part is Nascar as judged by tv ratings is pulling in so few casual fans it makes no sense for them to cater to them anymore. On top of that they alienate the core fanbase who watch motorsports on a weekly basis. 344. dennyfan11 posted: 10.03.2016 - 11:04 am Rate this comment: (0) (3) I just don't see what's so good about a race with no excitement, at least in the second half. Anyone not realizing that became a fan in the most recent years of Nascar...definitely post Fox's purchase of the first part of the season in 2001. I could live with the caution clock under one condition and it is not negotiable. During long green flag runs the first round of green flag piststops should be allowed, then when the last lead lap car has pitted and completed a full lap you could start the caution clock. The caution clock would only be started after a round of green flag pitstops. I could definitely live with that... 347. They weren't always exciting battles. Now, in the interest of making it more "exciting", NASCAR creates contrived endings to most races and every championship. What fans have to ask themselves is are they willing to give up an "exciting" albeit contrived ending each week and year for true competition. I think part of the solution (that would make races/championships more exciting and less contrived) would be a shorter schedule and shorter races. In longer races, the cars get spread out, and in longer seasons, the points get more spread out. 348. What Brian France and NASCAR has been is stuff like fake debris or do stuff like they did to Kurt Busch at Auto Club Speedway last year. When NASCAR does that,it is not real racing at all. I'll preface this with the acknowledgement that he had a comfortable lead, but Jeff Gordon in 1995 is a great example of why this is a bad idea. With 10 races left, Gordon was up by 167 on Sterling Marlin, with Dale Earnhardt in 4th 314 back. He held off Earnhardt by 34 after averaging an 11.1 finish over the final 10 races (21.75 in the last 4). By contrast, Earnhardt averaged a 3.5 over the last 10 races. Under the current format Gordon probably would have been eliminated in the 3rd round. Another good example is 2002. Sterling Marlin would have been the points leader to start the Chase. I would be more in support of a bye system though, if that's the route they choose to take. 6-4-2 or even 3-2-1 would be better than sending a single guy straight to the finals. For example, if they used a 6-4-2 system, then the top 6 would be guaranteed into the second round, while the other 10 would fight for 6 spots. Then, the top 4 are locked into the 3rd round, while 8 other guys fight for 4 spots. Finally, the top 2 are locked into the finale, while 6 guys fight for the right to the other 2 positions. This system would, for one, make season long points racing extremely relevant again, while still culminating in a 4-way battle at Homestead. Secondly, byes wouldn't decrease the competition level. If the guys already locked into the next round win a race, they decrease the odds of their strongest competitors moving on by virtue of victory. 374. Ceteris paribus, this still makes Kevin Harvick the 2014 champion, and he would have also won last year (Busch would have been eliminated after Talladega and Truex after Phoenix; Logano would have been locked into the championship four and Earnhardt would have clinched a spot by his Phoenix win). For a while there's gonna be some lame asses complaining about it just like when Toyota came in, but eventually it'll all die off and everyone will find new things about the sport to complain about. I've said it before, but I'm okay with anything that's not Walmart or Budweiser or some redneck stereotype enforcing thing, so in that sense Hisense seems fine to me. Not to mention that I can't think of any current sponsors in the sport that will be forced out like AT&T and Verizon were with Sprint (I guess Panasonic, but do they even still sponsor Hendrick?). Assuming it is them, hopefully they'll do a good job, and perhaps most importantly, hopefully their Cup trophy is way better than the Nextel/Sprint "waffle cone" Cup. 380. When I saw their name on the list of finalists, I had a feeling it would be them because NASCAR is trying to become more "global" and alienating their fan base while not attracting many new ones. I just hope they do a good job. Maybe Kroger asked BZF to dump the Chase. 385. nascarman posted: 10.05.2016 - 6:01 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) A bunch of people on twitter dont like it as expected. Going by their sites, Hisense doesn't deal in modems, cable boxes/DVR's, or routers which is Arris' main consumer product base. In fact, Hisense and Arris seem to be companies that need to work together for their respective products to be useful. Its likely that any TV manufacturer would be restricted like Panasonic, LG, Samsung, Sony, Vizio, etc. 387. 42KylePetty42 posted: 10.05.2016 - 6:13 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) What companies were finalist for the title sponsor? 388. But that's just one reporter's opinion. And as for the fact that Hisense is a Chinese company...Sprint was acquired by Japanese corporation Softbank in 2013. So uproar over this would be largely pointless. 394. David posted: 10.05.2016 - 7:31 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Whoops, I was beaten to it. Could be wrong, but wasn't there several rival tobacco companies sponsoring during the Winston era?" Chewing tobacco, yes. Kodiak, Skoal, and Levi Garrett had a big presence. However, I can't think of a lot of cigarette companies that had a big presence besides Winston/Skoal (both owned by RJ Reynolds). It seems like they were keeping cigarette companies out but not chewing tobacco companies out. I think Marlboro would have been in Cup otherwise (since they were sponsoring Penske's IndyCar team.) Considering the massive presence cigarette companies had in open wheel and sports cars, I think it's safe to say that Winston was keeping other cigarette companies out of NASCAR. Nextel grandfathered in rival companies and only blocked out new rival companies from entering (or companies that bought established sponsors from entering and changing the sponsored brand.) Alltel was fine until they were bought by Verizon, and Cingular was fine until they were bought by AT&T. I don't think Panasonic is likely to be bought any time soon, so that will not make an impact. 398. "Just because you or some people on here thought the announcement would be NASCAR-related doesn't make it so." Many people on Twitter thought it was NASCAR-related news. Hisense hyped up the announcement on its Twitter feed (calling it "the BIGGEST news in Hisense history") and liked a bunch of tweets from NASCAR fans suggesting that it was for the entitlement sponsorship. 407. chevyfan98 posted: 11.11.2016 - 11:09 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) The "pole"/"first" thing hasn't happened since this race after happening three times in a row leading up to it... just saying.
