Last Cup race to be covered by FOX this year. Hard to believe it, but next week NBC makes its' return to covering the sport. Curious to see how Rick Allen, Jeff Burton, and Steve Letarte will fair as the new commentator crew, but I feel confident they'll be pretty good. 3. And i agree with the first post DiBenedetto also has been the most impressive rookie this season despite driving for the worst multicar team in the cup series. 4. AJ is much faster than anybody, although Kurt is not that far. Kenseth 3rd is also a great qualifying, but despite not being a good road racer, Matt has been qualifying quite well on road courses in the past. McDowell's 23rd is very nice, as is DiBenedetto's 30th. Hopefully they can get a good finish out of it. 5. racefangurl posted: 06.27.2015 - 5:33 pm Rate this comment: (1) (1) Looks like a Chevy and Toyota kind of race, since there's only one Ford in the top-10. Either Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. got an old car or he's junk at road races. He's the 3rd best Roush qualifier in 40th. 6. kevin20fan posted: 06.27.2015 - 6:24 pm Rate this comment: (1) (1) Nice to see Matt qualifying 3rd. Hopefully he can keep it up there this year. He's run well the last three Sonoma races but doesn't have the finishes to show for it. He ran top 10 the entire 2012 race but was knocked off track by Tony Stewart and still finished 13th. In 2013, a strategy screw up turned a solid top 10 car into a 19th place finish. Last year, he ran top 10-15 before being wrecked by Junior. 7. 484life posted: 06.27.2015 - 8:12 pm Rate this comment: (0) (3) Everyone better be watching out for Tony because as Kasey said at Bristol earlier this year he gets overly excited when he makes the top 10 nowadays 8. racefangurl posted: 06.27.2015 - 8:23 pm Rate this comment: (0) (7) Unlike Trevor, Ricky has Cup raced at Sonoma and look who qualified better. I thought Roush was picking up and Danica is still right ahead of Greg Biffle. Stewart-Haas must have better cars that Roush because no way is Danica a better driver than Ricky and his teammates. Unless she's just a better road racer because of her Indy years, anyway. When they get back to ovals maybe the Roushskateers won't be out qualified by a girl driver. 9. racefangurl posted: 06.27.2015 - 8:54 pm Rate this comment: (0) (7) than Roush. And speaking of Indy history, Tony Stewart, Danica's car owner was an IndyCar driver once, so maybe he's just good at road races because of that. JMO why Stewart has a top-10 starting spot. Perhaps his good start is due to his road racing ability, anyway. 10. He also has a huge advantage of 137 points on Kyle. Allgaier - Really unlucky, but very fast on occasion and can get up even in the top 10 on merit and certainly will have some top 20, maybe even some top 15 finishes in the next 10 races. I am not much on Kyle's driving and attitude but he earned this one and even he might not admit it, he will probably be emotional about this one and I have no problem with him winning it. His wife, Samantha has done an incredible job this year handling everything, from Kyle's injury to having their child and getting him back into form. Credit goes there as well. But it will still be an uphill battle for Kyle to make it into Chase contention, he has to be consistent to make the Chase which is not one of Kyle's strengths. * The final time Larry McReynolds will be in the booth calling NASCAR races, but he will still be a part of the crew, just not up in the booth. Larry Mac always did a fine job, brought a lot of passion to the booth and his crew chief expertise. It will certainly be a different dynamic with Mike, Jeff and Darrell up there instead of Darrell, Larry and Mike. * A lot of hard hits today and some busted the tire barriers up pretty good. The only concern I could see would be a potential lack of infrastructure around the track to accommodate all the fans/teams. I don't see how that's a problem. The Atlanta Motor Speedway lost a date due to fan attendance and (possibly) the yearly trend of weather issues. The problems at AMS shouldn't necessarily translate to Road Atlanta. Bottom line is, it doesn't hurt to try, right? NASCAR ought to give Road Atlanta a Chase date, and if it doesn't work out after, say, three years, then try a different road course. Btw, I just looked it up, and Road Atlanta is less than an hours drive from the city of Atlanta, so hosting a big time Cup event wouldn't be that hard, I think. 334. NASCAR has dabbled at Road Atlanta in the past I believe they even ran an Xfinity race there back in the 80's. They even ran the K&N Series there not that many years ago and that didn't lead to anything bigger. If I had to guess it probably has to do with attendance. If Atlanta one of the best racing tracks on the schedule cant get people to show up I doubt Road Atlanta could especially right in the middle of the collage football season. Personally If NASCAR is gonna add a road course in the future they should look at Mid-Ohio or Canadian Tire Motorsport Park the races I've seen there over the last two years have been great. Road America on the other hand, I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole. It's one of those tracks where for some reason or another the race always ends in a GWC and it makes people go "WOW WHAT AN AMAZING RACE" which makes them forget how incredibly spread out the field was and how the leader has a 15-20 second lead on second. As much as I'd like more road courses I wouldn't mind if they got rid of Road America and went back to Milwaukee, that's one move to an oval I can get behind. 335. Obviously as I said in previous comments, I would like to see a road course in the Chase, however I don't think Montreal is the right road course. The races always seemed to be affected by rain at some point. I also don't like the idea of Indy being in the Chase because of poor attendance. My idea is put another road course race like maybe Road America in place of Sonoma's usual late June date and put the Sonoma race in the Chase, plus take out a few of the 1.5 mile tracks and replace them with some different tracks. 336. A lot of Canadian fans come down to New Hampshire for those races races. Putting Montreal one week before New Hampshire would absolutely kill the attendance for one of those two races. 337. No way would they ever put Montréal into the Chase with that kind of weather, no matter how entertaining the race might be. Not to mention that the circuit and race organizers basically ruined their chances of NASCAR ever returning to Montréal. 338. The most attended road course race outside of Le Mans, Petit Le Mans, happens there in late Sep/early Oct every year. There is NO way they will let a Cup race run there in the Chase. That is the track's and Jim France's cash cow, and Jim has proven to choose sports car's health before NASCAR every time in the past, even letting Indy get dropped. 339. Make it the second Chase race replacing New Hampshire one race at Loudon is plenty. You could also run Road America Mid Ohio and even Mosport. Somebody suggested running the Indy Road course that's not a bad idea I would go for that. 343. Some people seem to thing NASCAR can just pick out any road course around the country and bring a race there. Let's just keep it simple, a place like Road America or Mid Ohio, some place that has had some NASCAR sanctioned races over the last few years. They shouldn't bring Cup to a road course that has very little or zero NASCAR experience because if you don't have a lower series race at a place first, you never know how it will do with a Cup race. 344. While Atlanta is a big city, it does not have a good reputation as a sport city. That reputation is caused by Sports teams in the city of Atlanta having a history of fans not showing up to sporting events An example of this was Atlanta Braves playoff home games having a history of not being sell out. There is not just a baseball thing because the Falcon had problems drawing fans before Michael Vick and Matt Ryan. The Atlanta Hawks had problems selling out even when they made the playoffs. Atlanta also had 2 Hockey teams that had to move outside of the city also. 345. If they put lights in at the track the Summer race would probably come close to selling out too as the main reason for its attendance drop has been the hot temperatures. It might not have the best racing but it's one of the few tracks that can still pack the stands. Taking a race away from them would be a bad move. 347. One time, a NASCAR driver called himself "an oval guy" and that may also be why they have so many ovals. 351. Also every race should be 500 miles. (except road courses, the firecracker 400, and the Brickyard 400) 353. RACE34 posted: 06.30.2015 - 6:22 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) WinstonCupStandings I agree with you 100%!! I have always said that the biggest problem with the Cup schedule is there are too many tracks that have 2 races. If I had a say in it, Daytona, Martinsville, Darlington, Talladega, and Bristol would be the only tracks to have more than one race and everywhere else would have only one race, that would allow for more tracks that don't have any NASCAR races to host them. However based on what drivers and some fans have said about the attention span of fans being lower than what it used to be, I feel we need more races to be 400 miles or less except the Daytona 500, Southern 500, and Coca Cola 600. Plus I think the spring Talladega race, both Texas races, Atlanta, and the fall Charlotte race should be reduced to 400 miles. 354. It remained the only time they had done so for more than three years until they repeated the feat, with Kyle again winning, at Bristol in April 2019. Looking back on this race it had to be one of the most important of Kyle's career. This win in just his fifth race back behind the wheel was the launching point for his successful championship assault, by the end of the series' next road course race at the Glen he'd have four wins and be up in the top-30 in points. 372. It took an additional month until Kyle Busch found his way back to victory lane in the Cup series at Sonoma, in his first ever 1-2 finish with older brother Kurt Busch. This would build momentum as he wins 3 more times in the next 4 races, proving to the world that injuries will not deny him success. It would also result in Kyle Busch winning his first NASCAR Cup series championship in 2015. 373.
