Jeff Gordon scores his 75th career pole, and his 3rd pole at Watkins Glen. Hoping his race goes more like 1998 (where he won) than 2003 (where he was spun on the first lap, then spun and crashed out coming off the last corner on the final lap when he ran out of gas)... Consider that the Nationwide Series race, at 82 laps, is only eight laps shorter than the Cup race is, and I think the NNS is running the right distance. This race should be either 300 miles or 500 kilometers. Sonoma's a little trickier, but I think that race should also be 300 miles. But anything longer than 300 miles is too long for a road course race, because of the pace of the race. And joey2448, Gordon's longevity, which was kind of "swept under the rug" until his win at Indy two weeks ago, is the kind of longevity that is rare among athletes in any sport. For instance, Jack Nicklaus won professional majors 24 years apart (1962-'86), Ted Williams his .388 in 1957 at the age of 39 (though he had lost seven years of his career due to military service), George Blanda won the NFL's MVP award in his 22nd season (in 1970) at the age of 43, and Mario Andretti won IndyCar races 28 years apart (1965-'93). That's the kind of longevity we're seeing in Gordon. Among NASCAR's top drivers, the only comparisons would be Richard Petty, Bobby Allison, and Dale, Sr. Petty won races 24 years apart, Allison 23, and Dale, Sr. 21 (and it would have been more if not for his fatal crash at the end of the 2001 Daytona 500). And they were all competitive for so many years. Jeff Gordon's remarkable longevity at, or near the top of his sport, didn't really cross many people's minds until his recent win at Indy 20 years after his first there. 15. Won the Pole at Watkins Glen. It's been so long since Jeff Gordon has actually done all three of those in a single race, yet we got each individually in three consecutive races. 17. Mr X posted: 08.09.2014 - 3:31 pm Rate this comment: (3) (0) It's nice to not have to view myself as a hopeless optimist as a Jeff Gordon fan going into a race at Watkins Glen. Given the momentum on his side and the fact that he is on the pole he definitely seems poised to not just have a half decent run here, but to also have the best run here in more then a decade. Which would be nice considering the way he runs at Sonoma, and the way he used to run here. If not I'm a hopeless optimist. Here's hoping for better results then in previous years. On the subject of the road course races and particularly at Watkins Glen I have the following issues, there are too few races, the races are in fact too short, and the chase needs one. NASCAR's road races are excellent, the action is always fantastic, even without side by side racing necessarily, the cars racing the track even offers some entertainment value IMO. On the subject of race length I would generally like to see long enough races so that everyone had to make at least 3 pitstops. I feel like whoever is leading either the 2 or 3 pitstop strategy generally wins, plus it might allow winners from further back in the pack. This isn't such an issue at Sonoma where I would basically only like to see the race extended enough to see three pitstops become the minimum, how in going back to 1993 at Watkins Glen(the first full length race after the inner loop was added) you'll find that discounting red flags only 7 times has the race lasted longer then 2 and a half hours. Each of those races had at least 7 cautions. In 1995 with only 3 cautions the race was over in 2 hours 11 minutes and 54 seconds. No race at the Glen including the trio of races run in 1957, 1964, and 1965 have ever lasted more then 3 hours. The chase needs a road race, plain and simple. 18. Well Lime Rock is in the middle of nowhere, it would be extremely difficult to get fans in/out, the track is small and it really isn't that great. Laguna Seca doesn't seem like it would fit NASCAR well, just my opinion. I'd say my top 5 would be Sonoma, Watkins Glen, Road America, Montreal (which was the only Nationwide series race I'd watch when it was in the schedule), and possibly Portland International Raceway. It's hard to find a fifth road course that would suit NASCAR even in all of North America, but PIR is in a good place to attract a wider fanbase possibly, and the track itself is decent and requires a wide variety of skills. I personally like this track a lot but I doubt it would ever be considered...I can only hope. **I didn't include Mid-Ohio because I've never actually seen a race on that track, I'd have to do so in order to decide how decent it is. As for Gordon retiring by 2016...really guys? He'll be 45 years old, his back isn't affecting him anymore, and I'm sure he feels like he's got another championship in him. I'd think if he had to wait until 2020 to get his next title he would. Gordon wouldn't (and he knows this) get much positive publicity if he retires before 50, especially since he's still a Top 5-10 driver week in and week out. 30. Jeff answered that his back hasn't been the same since the Charlotte crash and he thinks he back will never be the same. He basically said his back never be 100 percent. He even said his wreck was worse than the Vegas wreck in 2008. Jeff also said his back isn't great for sure. While it is true that Jeff's back isn't affecting his performance on the track, his back is giving him grief based what I mentioned and the Pocono weekend I mentioned was the race after his Brickyard 400 win. While Jeff is still winning races, his statement about his back never be 100 percent again speaks about the condition of his back. The condition of his back is a bigger than you can make because it sounds like Jeff's back can't handle many nasty hits like he did the All Star race this year. 32. And that is why I believe that team have spent a HUGE part of the season focusing on Watkins Glen, and a small part of the season focusing on Sonoma. Why the difference in the amount of attention between the 2 road courses? Look at Ambrose's career stats at Watkins Glen and then Sonoma. Sonoma: 7 Starts 0 Wins 2 Top 5s 6 Top 10s 69/777 Laps Led WG: 3rd, 2nd, 3rd, 1st, 1st, last year's dnf Also Sonoma isn't a racetrack that road course experts have much of an advantage at in NASCAR stock cars. Especially compared to Watkins Glen. I mean look at the past winners at Sonoma and Watkins Glen: 08: Kyle Busch 09: Tony Stewart 10: Juan Pablo Montoya 11: Marcos Ambrose 12: Marcos Ambrose 13: Kyle Busch Sonoma: 08: Kyle Busch 09: Kasey Kahne 10: Jimmie Johnson 11: Kurt Busch 12: Clint Bowyer 13: Martin Truex Jr. 14: Carl Edwards The only excellent road course racer to win at Sonoma in the last few years would be Kyle Busch in 08. I would say all of the Watkins Glen winners are excellent road course drivers. Montoya, Stewart, J Gordon, R Gordon, Ambrose, and Kyle Busch are all the road course course "experts" NASCAR has had in the last 8-9 years. And look at the stats of those drivers at Sonoma vs. Watkins Glen: Marcos Ambrose Sonoma: 7 Races 0 Wins 2 Top 5s 6 Top 10s 11.3 Average Finish Watkins Glen: 6 Races 2 Wins 5 Top 5s 5 Top 10s 6.8 Average Finish Kyle Busch Sonoma: 10 Races 1 Win 1 Top 5 2 Top 10s 20.9 Average Finish Watkins Glen: 9 Races 2 Wins 4 Top 5s 8 Top 10s 8.1 Average Finish Jeff Gordon: Sonoma: 22 Races 5 Wins 14 Top 5s 18 Top 10s 8.0 Average Finish Watkins Glen: 21 Races 4 Wins 6 Top 5s 9 Top 10s 15.8 Average Finish Robby Gordon: Sonoma: 15 Races 1 Win 3 Top 5s 4 Top 10s 22.5 Average Finish Watkins Glen: 13 Races 1 Win 7 Top 5s 7 Top 10s 14.2 Average Finish Juan Pablo Montoya: Sonoma: 7 Races 1 Win 1 Top 5 4 Top 10s 16.1 Average Finish Watkins Glen: 7 Races 1 Win 3 Top 5s 5 Top 10s 13.6 Average Finish Tony Stewart: Sonoma: 16 Races 2 Wins 5 Top 5s 9 Top 10s 12.4 Average Finish Watkins Glen: 14 Races 5 Wins 7 Top 5s 10 Top 10s 7.9 Average Finish Jeff Gordon is obviously the exception and not the rule. Now don't get me wrong road course "experts" have an advantage at Sonoma. No doubt. But not near as an advantage compared to Watkins Glen. ( except that stupid Jeff Gordon!) So why is this? Well at Sonoma most of the race is making sure you have the right strategy and to make sure you keep all 4 tires on the track at all times(and to protect them.) Watkins Glen is way, way faster, and a lot wider. And tire protection and pit strategy are WAY less important. So I would imagine that yes Ambrose had focused on Sonoma this year, as he wants to make the chase. But I would also imagine that the have spent most of the year focusing on the Watkins Glen race. And because of that insane amount of focus on one race (especially compared to the rest of the teams.) is why I believe Ambrose is a big favorite to win at Watkins Glen this week. 38. Until this I thought nothing of it, but looking at the facts of the situation now, it seems likely Tony did something not so smart at the track tonight. I think he may have wanted to remind Ward who he is, and drive *past* him very closely, enough to rattle the young man. This is a stupid and dangerous idea (no shit, right?) but Tony screwed up and struck him. Though Tony didn't come at Ward with the intent to kill, punishment, at the legal level is necessary. Ward is clearly eyeing Stewart's car and clearly lunged into the groove that Stewart's car was. Very quickly, Stewart comes into the frame, tapping the gas once in what very likely was him trying to rotate the sprint car because the video is clear proof that he would not have been able to stop in time. For anyone who's never raced on dirt, you often tap the gas when trying to make a quick evasive maneuver left because the car gets on the right-rear tire easily that way. I'm pretty convinced that this was accidental, and I think racetracks need to take a stand right now and make sure that we have no more drivers trying to show their displeasure with moving race cars in the actual racing groove. These incidents need to be prevented, because we can't have these dangerous incidents happen. I know that I'm saying something that might not be popular, but playing in traffic around race cars is simply unacceptable. I don't think Tony Stewart wanted to hit a human being with his race car as fast as they were going after decades of not crossing that line. 93. And Tony should have without question just blown it off and moved on, regardless of if it was intentional or not (I absolutely don't believe Tony was trying to hit him, but he did throttle it up as some type of intimidation factor, which we've seen drivers do before, just like Joey said). A race should only be cancelled in cases of dangerous conditions (weather or an issue with the track itself such as IndyCar at Las Vegas in 2011) or national emergencies, but that's just my opinion. As was stated, what happened tonight was not at a NASCAR-sanctioned event. Plus, NASCAR has a history of going racing even after things like this (see: Earnhardt, Dale; Allison, Davey; Kulwicki, Alan; etc.). Only 9/11 and weather-related events (wildfires, rain, blizzard, etc.) has forced NASCAR to move an event from its scheduled date. Will there be somebody else in the 14 for the race? Absolutely. The only question is if it's a voluntary decision by Smoke or a NASCAR mandated one. It will probably somebody who ran the NW race that gets in the car in his place. 121. We as diehard race fans know that this was just an absolutely horrific accident. But all the casual media sees is "Tony Stewart's Car Hits and Kills Standing Driver". I just have to wonder if Nascar is willing to take the possible abuse in the media that may come with this. Fortunately though, from some more reports that I've read, it doesn't sound like they are gonna cancel the race. Like Zack said, the only real questions left are what Nascar will do with Tony (in my opinion, he shouldn't, and probably won't be penalized or suspended), will Tony voluntarily run this race (I personally think he should absolutely take some time off, but that's just me), and what, if anything will happen with the SHR team when it comes to image/sponsorship and that type of thing. Relatively dark track, Ward was wearing a dark fire suit, Ward was way too far down into incoming traffic, and it really looks like Tony tried to turn left and avoid him. 132. What may be a crime in Tennessee, may not be a crime in New York. Also, and I can't emphasize this enough, being responsible for another person's death is something that you will have to live with for the rest of your life. Even if it was unintentional or justified (as in cases of self defense), for an innocent soul there is probably nothing worse than having to live with that guilt. Saying this as someone who doesn't even really like Tony Stewart, the video makes it look like Stewart swerved to avoid hitting Kevin causing his back wheels to fishtail and run over Kevin. Maybe Tony really did just maliciously mow down a 20 year old kid and deserves to spend time in prison, but this lynch mob, give everyone the death penalty mentality that so many people adopt is part of what's wrong with society these days. 137. sk posted: 08.10.2014 - 7:26 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Re: Jeff Gluck of USA Today, Greg Zipadelli has suggested that it's "business as usual" and that Stewart will race, pending further updates. 138. I do believe some kind of punishment is warranted for Stewart's part, but I do NOT believe he meant to hit him. Aggravated assault seems most warranted, and if such were the case I do believe NASCAR should suspend Stewart so as to send a warning to the other drivers, but I would not want him suspended for more than a handful of races: enough to ruin his season, but don't park him for a year either. 160. Looking at the footage, Tony was already towards the botom of the track when Ward ran across to avoid him. Maybe I'm just overexaggerating though. Like numerous people have pointed out, I am 100 percent sure Tony Stewart did not do this on purpose. He's been in the sport long enough to know the risks, and this incident draws me back to his winner's interview from last year's February Daytona Nationwide race. In that interview, Tony Stewart, one of the toughest guys in racing, was visibly shaken and scared wondering if the fans in the grandstands as well as the fellow drivers were alright after the last lap crash. For that matter, no professional racing driver would want to do this on purpose. At this point, I think Tony should just retire. That wasn't like what Yeley did in the Nationwide race yesterday, where he stood at the side of the track and gestured at Trevor Bayne's car. Ward ran right into the racing groove, so much so that the cars in front of Stewart had to swerve and avoid him. He was risking his life to voice his displeasure, and it cost him. I shit you not, I saw someone out there on another site calling for Stewart to be charged with first degree murder and be put to DEATH. I will be openly honest and admit I am guilty of having done this (hell, right here on this very comments section), but I really am coming to hate how our society instantly judges people. The moment somebody gets into trouble for doing something wrong people immediately brand them as guilty before any investigation or trial can happen. The court of public opinion convicts you long before the actual courts have a chance to. It makes me think of the old days where people would be lynched after allegedly committing crimes without ever giving them a chance for a fair trial... Not only does Stewart have to live with this for the rest of his life, his reputation has been forever tarnished. Based on what I saw in the video (which I have no desire to EVER see again), I am nearly 100% convinced that what happened was a tragic accident that could have been prevented. But many people out there will never see it that way. Aside from living with the fact that he ended the life of another driver, Tony is going to have to live with the fact that many people will see him as some kind of psychopathic homicidal maniac who intentionally ran over another driver. It's not a scenario I'd wish for anyone to have to go through... 173. Biscuits In A Red Bull posted: 08.10.2014 - 10:56 am Rate this comment: (0) (3) If it was anyone other than Tony Stewart, they'd still be a killer! Stewart is paid millions to race in a top tier professional race series. He was a highly rated and respected racing driver by most racing fans, including myself (although I am impartial when it comes to NASCAR drivers, Stewart was more highly regarded than most for me due his success elsewhere). Guys like him - experienced, rapid pros - are supposed to set an example for the rest of young racers. Stewart was, before yesterday, a man many young stock car drivers (and sprint car drivers, and open wheel drivers) would have loved to emulate. However, yesterday he did an act on purpose that - intentionally or not - resulted in a man's death. Tony Stewart's career will now be remembered for how he killed Kevin Ward, a 20-year-old Sprint Car racer. Not for all of his success. Due to the fact that Stewart just killed a man, NASCAR would lose respect in the eyes of all but the most diehard fans for allowing Tony Stewart to race. The last time Stewart raced, it would've been less than 24 hours later, and he would've just run over a fellow competitor due to his own actions, resulting in that competitors' death. Stewart himself would be mentally shaken up, shocked, and probably depressed. He would not be in a fit state to get into a beast like a current Sprint Cup car and drive it for 90 laps around a complex 2.5 mile circuit. It's best for him if he doesn't run. As for the other competitors - this is harsh - but due to Stewart's mental state, it would be safer for them if he didn't run, in case his lack of concentration in the race resulted in an accident for one of the other racers. Many fans would also feel the same as me. Stewart is a killer. What he did is at least an act of manslaughter and was disturbing. Do you really want to see this man still getting paid millions and supposedly set an example having killed a fellow racing driver on a racing circuit less than 24 hours beforehand? As I've said, my first comment is bluntly put, giving it a harsh and negative tone, but this is my reasoning. Feel free to argue with me, but know that, as RichardHead has stated on Stewart's page, you are defending a killer. I hope the race is good for you stock car fans. As a Brit who's main interests in motorsports are elsewhere, I hope that you all get a good race that can steal the headlines away from Stewart and his actions and make you feel proud to be NASCAR fans after what would've been a tough time for you who truly love the sport. Whether it was intentional or not (and people can go back and forth with this all day, judging by many of the comment pages I've seen out there), Tony Stewart killed another individual. Even if it was a case of involuntary manslaughter (which looks like what it's shaping out to be), NASCAR is setting a horrible precedent by allowing someone to race who just ended another person's life less than 24 hours earlier. Should they allow him to race next week? Depends. We'll wait and see. But no way should he be racing this week. Like most have said, it's best for everyone involved if he does not. And not that the two incidents are greatly comparable, but Donte' Stallworth got a year's suspension from the NFL for a somewhat similar incident (a drunk man ran across the road directly in front of his car, and Stallworth couldn't avoid him). But I really wish he had kept his cool after that accident and used his head. If he hadn't walked right into the racing groove with the cars driving past, this would never have happened. Tony is certainly at fault for hitting him, there's no denying that (I'm certain that even if criminal charges aren't filed against him, he'll very likely be slapped with a big fat lawsuit), but Ward is certainly not blameless here. I have a gut feeling that he'll be making an appearance on the Darwin Awards site sometime in the near future...which I REALLY hope doesn't happen. There's nothing comical or funny about what happened here... As I said before, I do hope this does mean an end to the days of drivers climbing from their cars after an accident and walking onto the track to voice their displeasure at being knocked out of a race. I think drivers should have to stay in the car until the safety crews arrive unless there is an emergency (the car erupting in flames, for example). HOPEFULLY, this will lead to change. 183. As I posted on another forum: Whether the accident was Stewart's fault or Ward's fault is irrelevant at this time. What is relevant is that a young man got his life taken away from him far too soon by something that could easily have been avoided on both ends. Today is not a day for blame; today is a day to mourn the loss of a fellow racer, to offer our condolences to his family, and to memorialize him in today's race. R.I.P. Kevin Ward (1994-2014). He thought he had been wronged, and he was mad. To Kevin, Stewart was at fault for the wreck, although all accounts say they made casual contact on the front stretch and that Ward's wreck in turn 2 was not the result of further contact. He made a stand to defend himself, and he made a mistake. Unfortunately, at the same time, Stewart, feeling the same way, also made a mistake. Stewart, however, was driving a 1400 pound sprint car and should have stayed away from Ward until the end of the race. Instead, he let the arrogant, cocky Tony Stewart out and decided to show Ward who was boss, and Ward decided to show Stewart who was boss. Tragically, Ward died in this. If I killed somebody, I would voluntarily leave the sport, see a psychiatrist who specializes in trauma, and not return until he can face that reality again. I also think he should get anger management before returning to sprint car racing. However, it was NOT intentional. He was not thinking, "I'm going to mow this bastard over." In one race, Rob Collard, a feisty and aggressive touring car driver, and AJ ran side-by-side through a corner. Neither gave an inch, but AJ ended up in the barriers. Angered by this, he went right up to the edge of the circuit to tell Collard this. That's where the similarities to this case and the AJ/Collard incident ends. Whilst AJ didn't get as near to the car as Ward, Collard just drove past, not doing anything out of the ordinary under safety car conditions. Stewart - under yellows - hit the accelerator as soon as Ward was near. The end result? AJ and Collard were called into the stewards office to discuss the incidents post-race. Ward was killed and Tony Stewarts career will be, if not ended, then seriously affected by this, likewise his mental state will be hurt. The moral? Don't be mindless, and if someone else is being mindless, don't be mindless near them whilst you're both in a dangerous place with dangerous equipment. 196. Just hurts to think about. He is with God now, and I pray God grants his family peace. As for Tony, we have to look at the whole picture of his career. He has had so many moments of unnatural temper outbursts it is unbelievable. Wrecking cars at high speeds just because he doesn't like what somebody did (Daytona and Pocono 2006). Always looking for a fight. It was just a matter of time until somebody wound up on the fatal end of a Tony outburst. Especially as much as he races. It is time for him to leave the driver's seat forever. Either on his own or forcibly (can't imagine any sponsor would touch him now, and any sponsor of NASCAR would want to sponsor a series he races in anyways). Although I have no doubt he didn't want to kill the kid, his temper flared and the result is the loss of life of a 20 year old. And for those calling Kevin Ward Jr out for running out to gesture to Tony, this has been done a million times in all series all over the world. Including Tony himself numerous times including Martinsville where he ran up and REACHED INSIDE KENNY IRWIN'S CAR under caution. Why is Tony the only one to cause a fatality? Look at his career and a pattern emerges. A pattern of unnatural anger leading to extremely dangerous situations triggered by Tony. The video is self explanatory. All the cars under caution are all running the exact same line. Except for one. Tony's. He is at least one lane higher. Coincidence? Nope. Time for Tony to leave racing forever, distance himself from his racing ventures for the good of those ventures, and get professional help. 197. Ward decides to run up to Stewart's car like a dipwad. Stewart decides to get closer to Ward, maybe even salute him. Ward, trying to get closer to Stewart, steps from the right lane into the middle lane. Stewart, trying to get closer Ward, steers from the left lane into the middle lane. WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK IS GOING TO HAPPEN? Physics says they can't occupy the same place at once! One is little race car driver, and the other is a BIG race car. Physics lesson over. We find Stewart guilty of aggravated assault and maybe even involuntary manslaughter. Stewart has his license pulled, gets banned from all racing activities from a period. Both Stewart and Ward are nominated as recipients for the 2015 Darwin Awards to be held at the Staples Center in January. Ward is memorialized by having a race at Cananaiuga (however the hell you spell that) titled the "Kevin Ward Memorial" with a race run in 3 13-lap segments. 199. I would not be surprised in the slightest if he retires outright from this. He doesn't exactly have a wife or family to fall back on and help him through this. The kid's family (He was what...20 at the time? Just about a year older then me!) is going to go through major trauma. Tony is not a reckless driver, you're pretty much saying his recklessness is what causes his hotheadedness, but he's just emotional. Many people are the same way...I bet if you watched baseball, and you saw a pitcher intentionally attempt hit a batter (David Price and David Ortiz, or Brandon Workman and Evan Longoria), you'd see them get pissed. They might charge the mound, they might just stare at the pitcher as they stroll to first. They're pissed. Ward was pissed that a veteran, experienced, 3-time Sprint Cup champion made contact with him and he spun out. This wasn't intentional, but Ward being a 20-year-old kid got pissed, maybe a little over his head, but pissed nonetheless. He ran up to Stewart's car and got too close. There was nothing Tony could do; I've watched the video dozens of times now, and Stewart was following the same line everyone else was. Ward ran in front of him, Tony had nothing to do. So what you're trying to say is that TONY STEWART was the hothead in this situation? Maybe you should actually watch the video, instead of crying in a corner about something bad that happened 13 years ago. Did you blame Sterling for that, too? Yes, you are the moron because in this situation Tony Stewart was NOT undergoing an "extreme emotional outburst." He was driving the car around the track under caution, hell I'm sure he didn't even know he made contact with Ward's car. Tony did not run over Kevin. Kevin ran in front of Tony's car. I personally find it hilarious how whenever a racing accident occurs people start pointing fingers at the "villain" (in this case, Tony Stewart). It's called a racing ACCIDENT for a reason. I know I'm sounding hypocritical because I already stated how Kevin Ward pretty much ran into his own death, but this is the type of thing you can't blame anyone for. If Jimmie Johnson (probably the most clean racer in NASCAR) was Tony Stewart in this situation, would be blame Jimmie? If it was Dale Jr. in Smoke's car, would we be blaming him? The answer to both of these is, quite frankly, no, because neither of these guys are considered "villains" by anybody.. If anyone else in the car the same thing would've happened. So here's a lesson for you: Don't place the blame on anybody if you don't know what really happened. Because clearly, you don't. 229. One of the first lessons I was taught in dirt, that while on short track asphalt, its about braking points to set your car in the corners for a good racing line, in dirt, it's opposite, to control where you need to go on the racing line in the corners is actually controlled by the gas pedal (and naturally where you steer the wheel) Alot of people are like you can hear Stewart accelerate before he hits him, in all honesty he may have been trying to get his car controlled to move down the track. Sprint cars have locked rear ends and ALOT of rear stagger, they turn left better under power (gas). 279. That fuel cell was in a very vulnerable position, and the rear section of the car was nearly ripped off, which would've severed the fuel lines. The bottleneck off turn 5 is certainly becoming an issue at this track as are all the other bottlenecks. Obviously Watkins Glen has removed some grass from that area since 2009 but even more need to be removed, give the drivers more room to bring the cars back on to the track at less of an angle. Some changes to the walls are likely necessary to. The big white piece of debris that Danica first hit and bounced off the guard rail and then hit Justin Allgaier was the driveshaft out of the 95. 377. I think that the problem is that WGI is so fast for a road course, and the track is so narrow, so once you have a problem, you're almost bound to have a nasty crash. 380. Destroyahirismix666 posted: 08.10.2014 - 3:20 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I have to agree with DSFF here. The track needs a considerable redesign with it's walls. If it was a place where the walls are often a decent distance away from the track itself, like Montreal, Infenion, etc, we might be able to get away with this. But considering that there are large sections of track where you're virtually walled in on both sides, and/or have them jutting at strange angles is just asking for trouble like this. Again, I've not seen the incident, so I probably shouldn't be who everyone listens to, but that's just my opinion. We've seen how the design has made already bad incidents become worse (Gordon/Burton/Hornish 2009, Ragan and Reutimman in 2012) because it knocks the cars back into traffic or into another wall at an even worse angle. I do NOT want to see this track removed from the schedule. That said, I don't know if other racing series have similiar issues here. But Russell Phillips was the worst from a brutality standpoint. Luckily you can't visually see it, but it was awful. Tire walls are great for head on collisions, they are cheap and easy to repair although they do damage easily, they a much softer then most other barriers, however when hit at the wrong angle, cars tend to be thrown back into traffic. Armco barriers can absorb a lot too, though they do take a lot of damage in the process and we end up with a red flag like right now, we could argue about Steve Park's crash at Pocono in 2002, but no doubt that the Armco absorbed a lot of the impact. I feel like they don't offer the best case though given the repairs. Styrofoam moves out of the way too easily I feel, without really slowing the car. The safer barriers are great but expensive and too permanent for many tracks. Again a simple aid would be to remove more grass and give drivers more time to get their cars back into the groove. If Greg had another 100 yards to get back on the track he could've carrier more speed at less of an angle and this wreck likely wouldn't have happened. 409. murb posted: 08.10.2014 - 3:58 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE WATKINS GLEN MEMORY?" And today he finally broke through. It almost feels like the 2004 World Series all over again. I've been a Jeff Gordon fan since I followed NASCAR but every race I root for A.J. I doubt that anyone wanted him to lose today's race. What's not to like about him? 555. All in all a great win for AJ Allmendinger and JTG Daugherty Racing. AJ had to pretty much had to use every trick in the book on Ambrose those last few laps and those two put on a show, like two boxers taking blows and keep on trucking. JTG-Daugherty's first win as a Cup organization, they were in the Busch Series as an operation as well. * First win for car number 47? Or has anyone else taken that car number to victory lane? * Interestingly the front row is linked in irony, Ambrose drove for JTG Daugherty in his early years and should have won a couple of races, Sonoma comes to mind when the electrical failed. Allmendinger drove for the King at Richard Petty Motorsports as his teammate and after Ambrose left JTG-Daugherty he went to Richard Petty Motorsports. * Allmendinger closes the deal, he had fast cars with Richard Petty Motorsports and came very close to a few wins until he got beat. * To note:Tony Stewart withdraws from the race due to the Kevin Ward situation which I respect Tony for doing. The Kevin Ward situation is very disturbing, Ward came out to oncoming traffic to try and confront Tony Stewart and there were already drivers trying to swerve to miss him. Kevin Ward got in front of Tony's car and got killed. I don't think that Tony Stewart will be charged with murder but I do see a change in policies for drivers who leave their cars. Thoughts go out to the entire Ward family and Tony Stewart and team as they endure this tragedy. I wish the best for them going forward and something good comes of this tragedy. 569. It was truly an awesome race between him and Marcos. Yet more proof that NSCS needs more road racing. The action is always top notch. Today's race again fell just under the 2.5 hour mark. That being said this race felt plenty long with 2 hours of red flags. I was glued to the tv the whole time, but I was still relieved when it finally finished. Especially given that Allmendinger beat Ambrose. The battle was excellent and either will perform about equally in the Chase, but AJ is at least a fresher face with a brighter future in Cup. It was nice to see all the drivers safe and Alex Kennedy exercise caution before going onto the track as he looked like he was going to. I've been watching the comments page since late last night. I've seen the fans video, and read a view of the articles. My best wishes to the family and friends of Kevin Ward Jr. What a shame that a promising young driver's life be cut so short in that fashion. I also feel awful for Tony, after watching NASCAR and Tony for 11 years now I do trust that it was accidental. Having to live with that for the rest of your life will be a big challenge. I'm glad to hear of how cooperative he is being with the police on the issue, and that he chose to sit out today. As interesting as it has been to watch drivers show their displeasure with each other in years past it obviously isn't worth it. Hopefully some rule changes come of this. Obviously Tony is a veteran who can speak for his own actions better then I, but after listening to Vince Welsch(probably wrong spelling) quote Kasey Kahne, and listening to what was apparently Tony's engine responding to a large does of his right foot(I'm not 100% sure that it wasn't someone else), I'm not sure that Tony ever knew that Kevin was to his outside, or that he was squeezed over the cushion into the wall by Tony. I didn't see contact between the two cars. I'm not sure that Tony was expecting to come back around to find an angry driver looking for him in turns 1 & 2. The video doesn't show Tony's car again until he is right there, as he entered the picture he seemed to be going slightly faster then the 45 car in front him and he is also a little bit higher on the track. It's also possible that Tony's view of Kevin was obstructed by the cars in front of him, leaving Kevin out of sight until it was too late, similarly to the reason school buses have stop signs. I guess we'll have to see with time. 586. murb posted: 08.10.2014 - 11:11 pm Rate this comment: (1) (1) "just wondering but why are you guys critical about Marcos Ambrose? he's a race and a half ahead of his teammate in points and is currently a respectable 16th in points..." I just think he's already shown what he is going to be (basically a road course ringer who just happens to run the ovals too), and thus (I feel) is taking up a good quality ride that would be good for someone else with more potential. Also, a big reason why he's higher in points than Almirola is that Aric has had more DNFs (4) than Marcos (0). But when you look at actual lead lap finishes and disregard Aric's DNFs (many of which have been crashes not of his doing), Aric has run a lot better than Marcos this year. 587. If he can look himself in the mirror and can honestly tell himself and God that he was caught off guard and did what he knew best to avoid him then Stewart will be back in a car and competing for wins. As a long time Stewart fan I will say regardless of intent or accident Tony Stewart should be punish in some form. Young people today already have a hard time with accountability. I coach high school football and athletes especially have a false believe they don't have to listen to anyone and should not be held accountable for wrongs they do. Often times it is the very people who suppose to be governing the youth that do not hold them accountable cause these false beliefs. Now its the job of the governing bodies of racing to hold a big name accountable for a wrong. If they let Stewart walk free accident or not it just further drives it home in the youth of america that the can do whatever they please and will never have to answer to anyone. 614. DaleSrFanForever posted: 08.12.2014 - 4:54 pm Rate this comment: (3) (6) To me, the video tells the tale. At the time of the impact, Tony is on a trajectory towards Kevin Ward Jr as evidenced by the momentum of his car going straight towards the wall. For lack of a better word, his "follow through" shows he was aiming for Kevin. That can't be debated. So the question now is, was he just trying to scare him and lost it, or was it a classic Tony Stewart temper moment that had horrible consequences. Contrary to what I have previously posted, I cannot say 100% that Tony, in that moment of his infamous rage, didn't mean to hit him. We have seen too much evidence in the past that Tony, when his hair trigger temper is activated, safety is not on his mind. In the 2006 Daytona 500, he turned Matt Kenseth sideways through the wet grass 2/3 of the way down the backstretch leading to the very scary moment of Matt facing on coming traffic heading at him at 190+ mph driver side flush. This is just oneof numerous Tony incidents. Punching a photographer, using his car as a weapon at dangerous tracks like Watkins Glen Pocono, etc. And now the odds could not be kept at bay any longer, he has cost somebody their life. And now the rhetoric out there is about keeping drivers in their cars, improving lighting at tracks, et al. Never mind that drivers have been jumping out of their cars to geture at other drivers at all tracks since the dawn of racing, dimly lit or otherwise, yet Tony Stewart is the only person to kill somebody doing this, The King of Hotheads. And this leads me to another big problem I have as we are seeing yet another familiar pattern unfold: the protecting of Tony Stewart. He has been protected by his race teams, sponsors, and even the media he routinely blasts his whole career. Because of his freakish talent and colorful soundbites, he adds a lot to the show, therefore his completely unacceptable behavior has been tolerated, pushed under the rug, given lip service, and even PRAISED as a sign of "passion". And now he has cost another human being his life, and everyone is going right back into Tony protection mode. Enough is enough. All the warning signs of a potential tragedy have been there for a long time. Tony has needed to be out of the driver's seat of a race car long ago. He has needed to step away from all racing and seek professional help for his anger issues. Work on the deep rooted issues, and repair them as much as possible. Instead he has been surrounded by enablers his entire career. Trying to keep the cash train on track no matter how many times it threatened to go off track. Well now it has gone off track and struck a human being. And they are gonna try to put it back on track? Why? So it can go off again and cost another life? Time to pull the plug on Tony's racing career and focus on Tony the person. He was allowed to go on far too long, and now the worst has happened. Even if he was just trying to swerve at him, didn't any part of him think "this could turn out bad"? Of course not. Because in those moments of rage, he doesn't think. He is a ticking time bomb and has been one ever since he came into public consciousness. We don't need to keep drivers in their cars until a magic amount of time passes, we don't need to install million dollar MUSCO lighting at every small track, we don't need to ban drivers from wearing black driver suits and black helemts. I don't know why drivers have been allowed to get out of their cars and show displeasure for this long. I realize that it's entertaining, but any moron should be able to realize that you getting out of your race car and standing in the middle of a race track with race cars driving towards you is an asinine idea. I think and hope that some good rules will come out of this for all racing series. My bottom line about the situation is still this: With all due respect to Kevin Ward, if he had just stayed in his car and decided to talk to Tony after the race, he'd still be alive. Period. Whether or not Tony did this on purpose (I still don't think he did - I've bought into Watto's theory in post 92), Ward getting out of his car is what caused all of this. I hate to sound crass, but it's the truth. 616. i7 posted: 08.12.2014 - 5:15 pm Rate this comment: (5) (0) Funny that the fan of a guy that made a legacy of using his car as a weapon returns just to beat the drum of the Tony Stewart is Evil and a MURDERER! bandwagon. With his career, and then the Sainthood he was somehow granted after his passing, everything he did in his career has been placed front and center. Including the wrecks. Honestly, for a 22 year career, he didn't cause an inordinate number of wrecks. And yes, Richmond '86 was completely unacceptable as I have said many times before. But.......... Everyone who has been hit by anything was in the path of it first, accidents happen. I just can't see Tony being so upset over an incident that initially had absolutely no negative effect on him, especially in a race that Tony was only competing in for his own enjoyment. I don't think Tony had a reason to be mad, let alone mad enough to attempt to kill someone. I'm sure that some murderers do show some regret once they realize the mistake they've made. That being said with Tony's cooperation and what I see to be a lack of motive after the initial incident with Kevin, I just don't believe he did it on purpose. We've all seen Tony's infamous temper in the past. If my memory serves me right it was Matt Kenseth being to Tony's outside and getting him aero loose that got Tony so mad and brought out what I believe to be the worst in him in the 2006 Daytona 500. I still agree with what Kasey Kahne was quoted as saying in the prerace on Sunday. I'm no dirt track or sprint car expert but I don't believe with all the blind spots race cars most cars have that Tony ever knew Kevin was to his outside. That combined with what I see as a lack of motive, and the fact that Kevin was already proving himself difficult to avoid before Tony got there, and I see it as unintentional. As for the rest of Tony's career, I have no idea. I feel he should sit out for a while longer and perhaps make himself somewhat of a safety advocate in the future. He should work towards creating something positive of this. RIP to Robin Williams, it has been a rough couple of days. 629. murb posted: 08.12.2014 - 9:41 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Regardless, to reiterate something I said earlier, I do think that now is the time for Tony to retire. This year, he's clearly shown that he isn't the same driver he was before his leg injury, and now with all of this on top of it, it's not going to get any better at all for him from a competition standpoint. I know he probably doesn't want to quit, and that nobody should have to end their career on a note like this, but it's just time. There's nothing left for him to prove as a driver (except the Daytona 500 I guess, but even when you disregard all of this stuff, he hasn't run good in that race in quite a few years, so I don't think it'll ever happen if he keeps driving), and he's got several other ways (SHR, Eldora, etc) to stay involved in the sport and sort of feed his passion. But yeah, as a driver, between the leg injury and now this, I don't think he'll be anywhere close to being what he once was. So I hope he does just decide to hang it up. 630. There have been some horrible stories written up by people over the last 48 hours (from most every network, not just usual suspects like Fox News and MSNBC), many of which written by people who have zero knowledge of the sport and therefore are not qualified whatsoever to even say who their favorite driver is. I have to say that I agree with Keselowski that you're not going to be able to keep the drivers in the cars. My hunch is if NASCAR tries to make it a penalty to get out of your car if it's not on fire, they'll go with something along the lines of: 1st offense: Probation and a small fine 2nd offense: Extended probation, increased fine, and a points penalty 3rd offense: then you might be looking at losing seat time Instead of the ridiculous suggestions being thrown around on ESPN tonight about multiple-race suspensions for a 1st offense. Something else I can see NASCAR trying to implement is mandating that any driver with a NASCAR license clear any racing appearance in a non-NASCAR sanctioned event with them first. That would still allow things like Stewart's race at Eldora to go on, but also let the sanctioning body try to protect their drivers by getting a chance to check out conditions, emergency procedures, etc. with other tracks. 632. If your cars is on fire, get the hell out of it ASAP. I doubt they'll take that step, for legal & labor-relations reasons. Drivers are not employees of NASCAR, and NASCAR will be cautious blurring that line by enacting any rule that affects activities outside of NASCAR sanctioned events. We may see teams and sponsors (who do have a say in the decision) more reluctant to give approval in the future, though. NASCAR did do something similar to this back in the 50's, penalizing drivers who competed under other sanctions (though not actually banning them outright from moonlighting). It wasn't for safety reasons, it was to put a stranglehold on competing sanctioning bodies and establish themselves as the big dog in stock car racing. That was the era when Big Bill ran the show, though... different times. I do agree we'll see some sort of crackdown on drivers getting out of their cars to confront competitors on the track. "NNS: 4 full-time teams with Elliott Sadler, Sam Hornish Jr., Erik Jones, and Darrell Wallace Jr. (NO Kyle Busch or Matt Kenseth)" That would be really cool, but a more realistic four car team would probably be Sadler back in the #11, Bubba in the #18/#20, Suarez in the #18/#20, and then Kyle splitting time (hopefully WAY, WAY less races) with Erik Jones in the #54 (and I think Jones will definitely end up replacing Bubba in Trucks for KBM). Regardless of how many races Kyle runs, I would actually really like that lineup for them. They would have two young guys (three if you count Jones' limited races), one NNS veteran/regular, and then one "Owner's Championship" (ugh) car. But yeah, I would be cool with that lineup. Kevin & Jeff teammates once again ^-^ 657. ii posted: 08.15.2014 - 10:04 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Apparently NASCAR made a rule this morning stating that drivers out of their cars can't approach the racing surface, or moving cars. I didn't expect a rule change to occur, but apparently not. But if Tony is out long-term it looks like Jeff Burton will be the sub for at least most of these races. 658. How often DOES a driver approach another car in NASCAR's top 3 series while under race circumstances? I know Stewart chucked a helmet a while back, but it's a nature of Bristol. As a Burton fan also (He's only second to Johnson for me), it's interesting to see him back in a solid ride. While I doubt he'd pull out a win, I'd love to see him help step in as the mental rock that team is going to need. 659. Yeah, it's always exciting when people get out of their cars at Bristol and throw helmets or whatever, but the fact is that it's never been safe. It's a shame that it took a tragedy like this for everyone to wake up about it. But I like it. I can't complain about any rule changes that are for safety reasons. 661. murb posted: 08.15.2014 - 3:16 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I will say though, there is one thing I don't like about the rule, and it's that after a wreck they can't take off their safety gear (helmets, seatbealts, HANS, etc) until the safety team directs them to do so. That part seems pretty unnecessary to me. It seems like cautions will probably last longer now with that. So overall, I like the part about them not being able to leave their cars, but I do wish they could at least take off their safety stuff, so as to not completely drag cautions on forever. 662. If Boys, Have at it is gone because of this, NASCAR's gonna lose a lot of viewers, and that's something they don't need at all. 665. I think you made an error who led lap 86. I checked Wikipedia and it says Allmendinger and Gordon led 29 laps each and Ambrose led 20 laps. Which means Jeff Gordon should have 12 points instead of 11. And every race up to the chase, add one point to Jeff Gordon's total. Which means the points after Watkins Glen would put him 4 behind Dale Earnhardt, Jr. After his win at Michigan, he should be 3 ahead of Dale Earnhardt, Jr. After Dale Jr's tough night at Bristol, Jeff should be 27 ahead of Dale Jr. After Atlanta, he should be 21 ahead of Dale Earnhardt, Jr. And before the Chase after Richmond, he would be 31 up on Dale Jr. That's the mistake you got that Jayski.com didn't get. Your tallies are off by 1 for Jeff Gordon's points. And that's because you had lead Allmendinger leading 30 laps including lap 86. However, Jayski and Wikipedia cited that both drivers led 29 laps each and Ambrose leading 20 laps. That's where you made the error between Allmendinger, Ambrose, and Gordon. But the points for both Allmendinger and Ambrose are correct. Jeff Gordon's points however, you need to add one to the last five pre-chase races. Even live TV did that. That's where the page made the error. No one led 30 laps in that race, so two drivers in this race get two bonus points each due to the tie for most laps led. If a tie exists between two or more drivers for most laps led, all drivers involved each get two bonus points because they led the most laps but had at least one other driver lead that amount of laps. I checked two different pages and you need to add one to Jeff Gordon's point total, because Marcos Ambrose led lap 86 and Allmendinger was 2nd. That means you take one lap led and give lap 86 to Ambrose. Then, you add one point to Jeff Gordon's totals since Watkins Glen. He finished 34th and he did lead the most laps along with AJ Allmendinger. They led 29 laps each. Notice I said each. Which means the race had seven lead changes instead of five. Which means there were TWO 3M Lap Leaders in this race. 666.
