They had the same problem at Las Vegas. I'm sure they'll get it figured out at some point though. Luckily for them Kyle and Denny both have wins and are virtual locks for The Chase, so if Kenseth can snag a win somewhere and lock himself in, they can focus on fixing their speed issues. I expect them to be fine once we get further into the year. 18. 18fan posted: 05.09.2014 - 11:28 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The JGR cars were not bad at Texas and Fontana. I think Kyle was a clear top 5 car at Texas and Hamlin had driven to the lead before he sped on pit road. At Fontana, both Kyle and Kenseth were top 10 cars, but back of the top 10 cars. They are clearly behind the Penske cars, Hendrick cars other than the 5, the 4 car, and maybe the 42 car. The JGR cars do seem to race better than they qualify. 19. startandparkfan posted: 05.10.2014 - 7:19 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Wow, 2 good starts for Danica in a row! 20. Everytime I look at the ticker they're either always moving up or are already in the top 10. And when Matt Kenseth was at Roush I used to like him because of his shy personality and his racing style. Now that he's at JGR he's all outgoing and whiny and dominates every race making the race boring (similar to Kevin Harvick this year). And my favorite driver is Carl Edwards and from my understanding they were not the best of teammates when they were at Roush. 29. Seagal posted: 05.10.2014 - 12:59 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) 28. If you just look at the ticker, than it's easy to believe that. If you track them on the leaderboard and look at lap times and such, they are usually behind and getting passed more than they are passing. Fast pit stops are what keeps them up there. As for your dislike of Matt, you basically said that because he wins more, you no longer like him. That seems to be the norm with NASCAR fans. Win too much and all of a sudden your a terrible person. That's very irrational. If Carl won more than twice a year, would you begin to hate him too? Kenseth's racing style hasn't changed, he just had faster cars last year which allowed him to lead more races. Why should he be faulted for that? It's what all drivers hope for. I'm not sure what you mean by "whines" either. He has never been a whiner and I haven't seen that change. And Carl has had issues with many drivers. There are two Carls. The charming TV personality and the angry, vengeful Carl. Who knows if he and Matt are friendly now. Carl has said so, but I get a different impression when I see them interact. I guess I lose that bet. Anyway, happy race day and here's hoping the rain stays away! 30. And by whiny I meant inside the race car not outside the race car like Busch or Kes. I mean I'm pretty sure a year ago I was watching race hub and one of the people referred to him as "Matt the Brat" because of how often he whines about loose wheels and crap when he's in the lead. Maybe I just hate him because of his irrational pessimism about everything. 32. New14 & 88Fan posted: 05.10.2014 - 2:06 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) "I'm not sure what you mean by "whines" either. Matt Kenseth is not a whiner by any means, but I have noticed that he tends to act surprised/shocked whenever someone's mad at him for whatever reason. Way back in 2006 at Bristol when he dumped Jeff Gordon late in the race, Matt went up to Gordon afterwards to apologize and when Gordon shoved him he was like "Whoa man WTF?!". It was as if he expected Jeff to be totally clam about been screwed out of a good finish. 33. Seagal posted: 05.10.2014 - 2:23 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) 32. Well, who really expected Jeff Gordon to do something like that? I think he was more surprised at the 'who' than the 'what'. Matt said in his interview afterwards that he knew Jeff was mad, with good reason, and that he should have waited to talk to him. He wasn't surprised at all. He made a mistake and admitted it. I mean, Matt is far from flawed, as is everbody, I'm just annoyed at some of the reasons people give for hating drivers. Like winning. Or being "outgoing"...flaws indeed. 34. numbah10hatah posted: 05.10.2014 - 2:46 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) David #24: If being lapped in the first 30 laps isn't enough proof than being the slowest car every week in qualifying, I don't know what is. 35. numbah10hatah posted: 05.10.2014 - 2:53 pm Rate this comment: (0) (3) This is what the starting line-up should look like: Row 1: #4 Kevin Harvick and #22 Joey Logano Row 2: #2 Brad Keselowski and #24 Jeff Gordon Row 3: #99 Carl Edwards and #42 Kyle Larson Row 4: #48 Jimmie Johnson and #41 Kurt Busch Row 5: #55 Brian Vickers and #27 Paul Menard Row 6: #5 Kasey Kahne and #31 Ryan Newman Row 7: #51 Justin Allgaier and #3 Austin Dillon Row 8: #17 Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and #12 Ryan Blaney Row 9: #14 Tony Stewart and #10 Danican't Row 10: #88 Dale Earnhardt Jr. and #16 Greg Biffle Row 11: #9 Marcos Ambrose and #15 Clint Bowyer Row 12: #1 Jamie McMurray and #78 Martin Truex Jr. Row 13: #13 Casey Mears and #20 Matt Kenseth Row 14: #47 AJ Allmendinger and #11 Denny Hamlin Row 15: #83 Ryan Truex and #43 Aric Almirola Row 16: #98 Josh Wise and #23 Alex Bowman Row 17: #18 Kyle Busch and #7 Michael Annett Row 18: #44 JJ Yeley and #26 Cole Whitt Row 19: #36 Reed Sorenson and #34 David Ragan Row 20: #38 David Gilliland and #77 Dave Blaney Row 21: #40 Landon Cassill and #32 Travis Kvapil Row 22: #33 Timmy Hill DNQ: #66 Joe Nemechek 36. That doesn't mean he's a rolling chicane, it just means he is slow. "Rolling chicane" refers to drivers who can't get out of their own way and wreck often, which Nemechek most certainly has not been doing. 38. murb posted: 05.10.2014 - 3:12 pm Rate this comment: (1) (1) "If being lapped in the first 30 laps isn't enough proof than being the slowest car every week in qualifying, I don't know what is." The key phrase you used here is "slowest car". He may be in the slowest car, but that doesn't mean that he's the slowest driver. And if you would look at his record in Cup (four wins for four different mediocre teams - and yeah, I count the HMS #25 as "mediocre"), you'd see that back in the day, he was damn good at taking lower-tier cars to wins and good runs. And also, those weren't fluke wins either. He flat out dominated in pretty much all of those wins. So to me, his wins in low level cars disqualify him for any criticism about being a "rolling chicane" for the entirety of his career, even when he's in an absolutely godawful ride like he is no that stands no chance whatsoever of running well. And also, just last night in the Truck race, he was running top ten and having a legitimate battle with those guys. Sure, it was a high attrition rate, but either way, Joe overachieved and proved that he can still race hard. So in conclusion, don't blame Joe for his Cup ride being an absolute shitwagon. He's proven in the past that he is a damn good driver by taking mediocre rides to dominating wins. And I guarantee you if he had real MWR equipment for his #66 like Michael Waltrip does when he runs the #66, he would still be having some pretty good runs. 39. Matt has been Matt the brat by the local media in Wisconsin for years and Matt never has been known as Whiner in Wisconsin when he first got the nickname. The local Media in Wisconsin even explained why Matt Kenseth was called Matt the Brat even back in 1994. He was called that in Wisconsin because he used to beat older competitors such as Robbie Reiser on the Wisconsin short tracks so much when Matt was a young short track driver. 46. Danica drove a great race, but I spent much of the race saying that it was a top 3 car, but that takes nothing away from her because how many times do drivers with top 3 cars finish 20th because they drive too hard. She never pushed the issue and was consistently able to pass cars, which was the most impressive thing to me. The Gibbs cars were terrible in the race. Hamlin has been so inconsistent over the last couple years you never know which Hamlin will show up, but that team hasn't been very good all year so I didn't expect much. It is well documented how bad Kyle is at Kansas, but I liked the way he and the team kept digging and got a top 15 finish. Efforts like this will help them contend, although they will obviously need faster race cars to be serious contenders. Kenseth got a typical Kenseth top 10, invisible for most of the race and then showed up at the end in the top 10. Getting better finishes than they deserved is how the 20 and 18 teams are 2nd and 3rd in points without having great speed this year. I believe there are three teams that are just better than the rest of the field and they are the 4, 22, and 24. These three teams have to be considered championship frontrunners at this stage of the season. 243. Like I said, I think Logano and Harvick will each win at least two more races before The Chase (I see Logano having a Kasey Kahne 2006 style breakout year where he wins a bunch of races). And as for the other guys who have won already, I see Gordon, Earnhardt Jr, Keselowski, and Kyle Busch all winning at least once more. And as for guys who haven't won yet, surely Johnson and Kenseth will pick up wins, and people like Stewart, Kahne, Newman, and Bowyer could very well pick up wins down the line too. And then there are some wild cards like Larson, Almirola, Allmendinger, and Menard (and if I had to guess out of those four, I would pick Larson to get a win). So, overall, I still say The Chase will be made up of 12-14 different winners. The part that interests me most is who the non-winners in The Chase will be. 245. I will admit, towards the end of the race I definitely had the thought that NASCAR would throw a debris caution before the end of the race in the back of my mind. I actually crossed my fingers at about five laps to go hoping there wouldn't be a random "debris" caution to set up a GWC! Thankfully, there wasn't. He ran out of gas just prior to his final stop, and that's a king-sized blunder that a driver with the best car, as Harvick had almost all night long, had. However, Jeff Gordon's conservative driving in traffic in the final 2 laps made the finish closer than it should have been, though he also knew he had it in the bag at that point. He just didn't want to take any chances with over a 1-second lead. If he had to, I believe he could have passed those cars, but he knew that, although Harvick might catch him at the very end, at the rate he was catching him, he would likely not be able to pass him, and that's exactly what happened. I said after the race at Richmond that if Gordon didn't win by the end of May that he likely would not win. Well, scratch that, because he's now broken into the win column, and with him running like he's been running, the old Gordon may be back, and if he is, then the others may be in for a hard season, because almost all of them were not around when Gordon was collecting wins like crazy from 1995-2001 (56 in seven years and leading the series in wins in six of those years). However, on that final run, Gordon's car seemed to be a match for Harvick in equal track conditions, if not a tick better. Let's not forget that the ground Harvick made up in those final two laps was exactly the amount of ground he lost just a few laps earlier when the situation was flip-flopped. But the way Gordon won this race also reminds me that, when he was running second earlier in the race, he may not have been running as hard as he could have, but rather only as hard as he needed to, or wanted to. He has a way of pacing himself and not showing his true strength until it matters most. Remember that before the final pit stop, Gordon was gaining ground on Harvick hand over fist, cutting a 3 second deficit to less than half that before the final pit stop, so he may have had something in reserve that nobody, not even Harvick knew he had left. And Gordon's win, the 89th of his almost unparalleled career, even got Darrell Waltrip to ask the question of whether Gordon could reach that almost impossible milestone of 100 wins and become the third driver ever to win into triple digits in his Cup career. Races like this one, where he basically baited his key competition into a major mistake, is why he may end up going down as the best ever (I know that's always a hot argument). Certainly, he's in the top five, if not the to three (I have him second). And as far as I'm concerned, to rank as one of the very best ever in any sport, you have to have longevity, and Gordon has that angle covered, as this marks his 19th different season (out of 22) with a win, something that only guys like Petty (23 years with at least 1 win), Earnhardt (20 years), and Allison (20 years) among the legends can boast (Pearson and Yarborough "only" won in 18 seasons and Waltrip did so in 17 seasons). And as far as I know, the only other driver to win in so many different years was Ricky Rudd, who won in 19 different seasons, but only won more than once in four of them, and never more than twice in any one season. 258. I actually felt that this was the most entertaining through the entire event, like Fontana was. It's a shame I fell asleep for the ending duel, but I had ran myself ragged with end-of-semester homework assignments. Lots of drivers seemed to just spin out by themselves in the dirty air, and now I'm wondering if the incidents that caused the two big ones in the 'Dega race may not be limited to just that, but something wrong with the cars. This is the first time since 2011 that Jeff Gordon wins a race in the Cup series before Jimmie Johnson. All that talk about retiring...I think we need to postpone that another 5 or so years, again, like we had to after Gordon had a semi-resurgent 2009. When these guys wrecked today (not spun, wrecked) they did it hard and with a vengeance. Most of the day's incidents were off of turn 4 or heading down the frontstretch...interesting. Harvick dominated early, got caught in the rear of the field mid-way through, allowing Logano to dominate the middle section. Afterwards, there was a section with plenty of unexpected names contending at the front with expected ones, such as Stewart, Patrick, Harvick, Gordon, Logano, Kyle Busch, and Dale Jr. Congrats to Jeff Gordon on his 89th win. I honestly thought 5 years ago that he was done winning, hell, I thought that in 2011 and 2012 also. This man just does not stop laying out the surprises on me. I don't think he knows the word 'longevity', he only knows the term 'eternal-gevity'. Kyle Busch had a Not-Kyle-Busch-at-Kansas type of day, actually fighting all sorts of sh*t to get a top 15 finish. I'm impressed by that. Danica was up to the top 3 at one point in the race's running, and never fell below 13th. A small part of me wanted her to win, but mainly so that way it would be 'honest' rather then lucked into or backed into like a fuel-mileage or Plate race would be. 259. After all, none of the greats at anything (and no I'm not saying Danica is a great) came out of the womb having already mastered the skill that would make th great. Not only do they actually upload the broadcasts of their races onto Youtube, they've even gone back and uploaded old broadcasts of classic races from time to time (or at least, they used to do that, I'm not sure if they do anymore). Why can't NASCAR do something like that? I hope NASCAR doesn't follow in the footsteps of F1 and the overwhelming majority of other sports and start deleting anything and everything NASCAR from Youtube that they didn't post themselves. If the vintage races from the '80s onwards that people have uploaded there start getting pulled down left and right, I'll probably throw a fit. I wouldn't be shocked if that DID happen, though... So would I, but I have to think (and hope) that they wouldn't be stupid enough to kill a classic track like that in favor of Iowa. For what it's worth, I've been seeing a lot of rumors about how Darlington may end up back in the Labor Day slot some time soon, so luckily I don't think we have to worry THAT much about it losing a date. If I had to guess which tracks stand the best chance of losing a date to Iowa, I'd probably say Dover and Michigan are the two likeliest, with Pocono possibly being not far off behind them. Dover has been rumored to be losing a date for a couple years now, Michigan recently knocked down a bunch of their grandstands due to low attendance, and Pocono always has weather problems and is one of the most polarizing tracks amongst the fans (even though I love it - a lot of people think it's boring though). So if Iowa were to replace one of those three tracks, I honestly wouldn't really mind at all. My first choices to lose dates would be Kansas and Texas, but neither of those will happen because of the casino at Kansas and Bruton "Boss Hog" Smith being the owner of Texas. 298. 18fan posted: 05.12.2014 - 4:35 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) With Iowa being an ISC track you can rule out any Bruton Smith owned track being replaced by Iowa if it did get a Cup race. If they didn't want to add another Midwest race Kansas and Michigan would be my picks to lose a race (I don't like Chicago either, but I would rather take the second date from Michigan or Kansas than take the only date from Chicago to keep more track variety. Of course it would be a huge mess if you tried to take the one remaining race from a track, since the last time that happened it was mainly due to a nasty lawsuit). If NASCAR was open to adding a race in the Midwest then Pocono would definitely be my first choice to go and then they could make their one race a 500 miler (Gosh, the idea of a 500 mile race at Pocono in this era makes me cringe). If Darlington does go back to Labor Day, where would they put Atlanta? I would not mind at all if they put Atlanta in the Chase and took out Talladega (Talladega being an elimination race in the Chase this year is a disaster waiting to happen in terms of conservative racing), but then where do you put Talladega. It was moved due to the excessive heat during the summer, and the middle of the summer is the only place on the schedule you could move it if you left the first date where it is now. This highlights the hardest part of prospective scheduling. It is very easy to move a race to a certain date, but you have to also consider the race that is currently in that date. In certain cases it would work (Such as a straight Atlanta-Darlington swap). But others would be harder to do. Whatever NASCAR does with their schedule needs to include a moving of Talladega, even just a couple weeks, so it is not an elimination race in the Chase. Of course it not being a Chase race at all would be my ideal situation, but the easiest way to do that would be to take a date away from Talladega and that would be a very unpopular move among NASCAR fans, especially the "fans" who love to see a lot of big wrecks. 299. I think Logano is an underrated championship contender; they've been fast and led laps everywhere. There's something off with the JGR cars and the 48. Except for a few races, those teams have not shown the speed that they're capable of. I think they can get it in gear (no pun intended) before the Chase but as of now, it's a little concerning. If the horrendous luck for the 41 keeps up, they could fall out of the top 30 and miss the Chase. I don't see that happening though, as there are some really strong tracks coming up for Kurt (Pocono, the road courses, Daytona). I'm horrendous at making predictions, but here's who I see filling out the final seven spots: Johnson, Kenseth, Kahne, Biffle, Vickers, Dinger and Larson. As for Talladega, I don't know. I would love it to be moved back into the old Summer slot (maybe a swap with Indy putting Indy in The Chase), but the grueling heat is an issue, mostly for the fans (I think the drivers could handle it). So I don't know. Unless you wanted to do a swap between Talladega and Fall Richmond (putting Richmond in The Chase and making Talladega the cutoff race), I really don't see anyway to take Talladega out of The Chase. And it's fitting that it's mentioned now, since the All-Star Race is coming up, because that race that was held at Atlanta on Mother's Day was the second All-Star Race, in 1986. That also marked the only time it was held somewhere other than Charlotte. Two things saved the All-Star Race, and they both happened at the same event. The first was the action in the final ten laps of that race, with Earnhardt, Elliott, Bodine, Labonte, and Tim Richmond all having starring roles. (People tend to forget that in all the fireworks between Earnhardt, Elliott, and Bodine that it was Terry Labonte and Tim Richmond who ended up being the ones chasing Earnhardt at the finish, not to mention Earnhardt's vicious block on Labonte that helped to propel him to victory.) But the second thing that propelled the All-Star Race that year (1987) was that ABC decided to televise the race live (in the Eastern and Central time zones), and putting the All-Star Race on live network television for five years (1987-'90 on ABC and 1991 on CBS) really was what gave it major event status, because there were only five NASCAR races on network TV from 1989-'91 (there were six in 1987 and '88), and the All-Star race was one of them. And the legendary Keith Jackson made the Earnhardt/Elliott moment even more historic than the moment was in it's own right, because it had the voices of one of the all-time greatest broadcasters on it. Without ABC and Jackson's call, I don't think that move would be as remembered as well as it is. And Jared, I think what the three most dominant teams last year (JGR's #18 and 20 and the #48 of HMS) are suffering from is the same thing that other teams (Penske and the #24 of HMS, in particular) are benefitting from, and that's the new rule taking away the minimum ride height requirement. Usually when a major change like that is made, the deck usually shuffles, and what I mean by the deck shuffling is that a major change like can help teams an drivers that are struggling and hurt those that are running very well, and that's what we're seeing. The only team among those with no significant changes that seems to be doing the same this year as they did last year would be the #88 of Dale, Jr. Dale, Jr.'s the only one that ran strong last year that's running strong this year among the drivers that did not change teams. Even Joey Logano, who did run very strong at times, is doing markedly better this year than he did last year. The others are either running better than they did last year (Keselowski, Logano, Gordon), or worse than they did last year (Ky. Busch, Kenseth, Johnson), and I put that squarely on the changes NASCAR made to the handling packages of the cars for 2014. 313. One of the reasons why most of the posters don't like her is the fact that she's done nothing in such a potent car, myself included. However, those who criticize her lack of performance in such a potent car need to give her full credit when she runs like she did Saturday night. After all, she had a legitimate chance to win that race, as she was running as high as third deep into the race, and doing so legitimately. I was one of the first on this board to tag the "Danican't" nickname on her because of her poor performances, but she deserves full credit for how she ran, because Danica was the #2 performer in the SHR stable in that race (above both of their Cup champions), behind Kevin Harvick, who's outperformed everyone to this point in the 2014 season, though Joey Logano is a close second to Harvick in that regard. If she continues to run close to what she did Saturday night, I think many of her critics on this board will have much, much less to talk about on that front, myself included. In fact, her performance at Kansas might be her best performance in either NASCAR or IndyCar competition, which includes her number of near-misses at the Indianapolis 500 and her one IndyCar victory. That's how well she did Saturday night. You don't run in the top five in the Cup Series by accident, and I also think she found out how much easier it is when you're running with the leaders than when you're in the middle or back of the field, because there's a lot less to worry about. And this thing with NASCAR and YouTube goes back to what happened last year at Daytona in regards to the Kyle Larson crash. NASCAR had YouTube take down uploads of the crash from people who captured it from the stands and uploaded it onto YouTube. And NASCAR got in big trouble for that, because they did not use copyright grounds as a reason to have them taken down, but rather said they did so in respect to those that were injured, and that's against YouTube's policy, so YouTube restored those videos. And ever since then, NASCAR has not wanted any races uploaded onto YouTube. But prior to that, they never had a problem with anyone uploading races onto YouTube, especially classic races. In fact one user even copied uploads of classic Daytona 500s, including the 1984 and '85 races that I had once uploaded, but that user never got into trouble until NASCAR's crackdown started with the whole Kyle Larson crash controversy at Daytona. 328. 23andJoe posted: 05.13.2014 - 10:05 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) The Indianapolis 500's entry list: #2 Juan Pablo Montoya #3 Helio Castroneves #5 Jacques Villeneuve #6 Townsend Bell #7 Mikhail Aleshin #8 Ryan Briscoe #9 Scott Dixon #10 Tony Kanaan #11 Sebastien Bourdais #12 Will Power #14 Takuma Sato #15 Graham Rahal #16 Oriol Servia #17 Sebastian Saavedra #18 Carlos Huertas #19 Justin Wilson #20 Ed Carpenter #21 J.R. I certainly agree Kurt will be in the top 30 in points after Richmond unless he is injured. The question is what the precise eligibility rule for the Chase is. It seems Denny Hamlin has set a precedent that all Kurt needs to do is qualify at Charlotte and he's still eligible. If that's the case, maybe Kurt will stay until the end of the 500 if he needs to and completely ignore the 600 since it wouldn't matter unless he either won the 600 (unlikely) or there were more than 16 winners in the top 30 in points (also unlikely). The first 26 races definitely matter less than they did in past seasons, and they didn't matter all that much back then. Having said that, Robby Gordon has left early in the past to get to Charlotte before when rain caused the 500 to run over, and you'd think that in that period the 500 was his passion more than his Cup career (which is probably a major reason why he underachieved in Cup...) If Robby, whom you'd think has more passion for Indy, was willing to leave early, I think Kurt probably would in the same situation as well. 337. That will provide major incentive for Hinchcliffe to enter those races - if he does well in those races, he might make the top ten anyway despite how far behind he is now. I'm still not sure I think he should be racing, but I'm not a doctor. 338. Matt posted: 05.14.2014 - 10:49 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) 337: Never realized they doubled points in IndyCar. It seems like his passion to run the Indy 500 didn't just come out of nowhere and he is intent on running both races. Speaking of guys who have done the Indy-Charlotte double, I think Tony Stewart's demise is being overblown this year. I know he's been slow and his two top 5s were more strategy induced than anything, but at this point last year he was 21st in points with a whopping 1 top 10 finish and 1 race led (the same number of races led he has now Last year his one race led was by being off sequence on pit strategy, this year by starting on the pole). Starting with the 600, he went on one of his summertime runs and had 1 win, 5 top 5s, and 7 top 10s in 10 races and had gone from 21st to 11th in points before his injury. He didn't lead much, leading 4 of the 10 and only leading double digit laps in one of the races. If Tony is still running mid-pack in June and July, then I will say that he has lost it, but I'm not ready to say that just yet. 340. I called releasing Chip Bolin big move because he joined Roush in 1998. You have to wonder if this move for trying to resign Carl Edwards and Greg Biffle because Roush has been off at time times this year in the cup series and putrid in the Nationwide series. 341. murb posted: 05.15.2014 - 9:20 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "You have to wonder if this move for trying to resign Carl Edwards and Greg Biffle because Roush has been off at time times this year in the cup series and putrid in the Nationwide series." Probably. Roush has to be getting desperate to keep those guys. Carl has been awkward as hell lately when asked about his contract situation, and Biffle's contract talk has fizzled out recently, so you have to wonder if he is thinking about leaving as well. I'm not entirely sure right now about Biffle, but I REALLY don't see Carl coming back next year. I'll honestly be surprised if he does. The pre race interview he did with DW where they talked about championships was the tell tale sign to me. He can't win one at Roush, and he knows he can't. And you also have to believe that Carl has noticed this trend of drivers leaving their long time teams and then being successful immediately. Kenseth and now Harvick have done it, so I'm sure Carl has to be thinking that he too could greatly benefit from a change of scenery. If I had to guess where Carl would go, I think it would either be a fourth JGR car or a rebooted third Penske car (I know they need sponsors to expand, but Carl is one of the best in that department, so I don't think it would be that much of a problem). JGR courted him a couple years ago, so that one seems like a no-brainer (and they've repeatedly talked about a fourth car in recent years, so it has to be coming at some point). And I also think Penske will get some consideration too just because of Carl's relationship with Ford. I know that might seem like an odd fit with him and Keselowski as teammates, but I'm pretty sure Penske himself would be smart enough to lay down the law and prevent Rusty/Newman Part 2 from happening (plus I'm pretty sure Brad and Carl are over their whole feud for the most part anyway). But like I said, I'll actually be pretty surprised if Carl decides to stay at Roush. I don't see any way at all that he can win a championship if he remains there. Roush seems to be in the beginning stages of a big drop off. 342. Eric posted: 05.15.2014 - 10:29 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) My only problem with Carl at Penske would Roger has Ryan Blaney in the wings and I don't think Roger would want 4 full time cup teams. I mentioned Ryan Blaney in the wings because Ryan has 1 more cup this season and has more Nationwide races coming up this year. It looks like Roger wants Ryan ready for cup in 2016. While Carl is older than Brad and Joey, he is going to be in his prime for a while yet. 343. 23andJoe posted: 05.16.2014 - 3:52 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) This just in: Sterling Marlin will be driving in the ARCA Midwest Tour (the spiritual successor to ye olden ASA of yore) Howie Lettow Memorial 150 at Milwaukee this summer (basically the northern midsummer Snowball Derby). 344. Unlike Carl Edwards, who I think may be gone at season's end, Biffle has always stated his desire to stay with Roush and possibly finish his career there. The reason we haven't heard all that much about Biffle's contract status is because I believe Biffle made it a point to make it as low-key as possible, mainly because it's his prime desire to stay right where he is. Edwards, on the other hand, seems bound and determined to squeeze every dollar he can out of Roush, while continuing to put Roush through the ringer as it refers to the negotiations. I firmly believe that the drama surrounding Edwards' last contract negotiations with Roush cost the #99 team the championship in 2011, because they were the best throughout the entire season, but ran out of steam at the end. That's something I don't think Biffle wants any part of, because I think he's happy right where he is. Now I don't have a major problem with either way of doing things, but I just think Biffle wants to stay there, while I'm not sure Edwards wants to, and I'm not entirely sure his heart was completely in staying there the last time, but there was nothing else available. Remember how he (Edwards) put not only Roush, but also Joe Gibbs and Joey Logano through the ringer last time? I still don't think that Logano, now with Penske, has forgotten that whole fiasco, and that may be one reason for the rift I've seen within the top two Ford teams ever since Penske rejoined the Ford ranks. I don't think Logano wants to assist Roush in any way as some kind of retribution for what Roush and Edwards put him through in 2011. But I think the change we saw at Roush this week may be a drop in the bucket compared what changes that organization might be in store for as this season gets older and 2015 approaches, because if Edwards leaves, there will be major changes there to the driver lineup, and the domino effect will ripple through a number of top-echelon teams, and we might see an established driver in that #99 car next year, though who that would be, I have no idea at this time. 346. Scott B posted: 05.16.2014 - 12:22 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Resigning Edwards is obviously a much higher priority for Roush than Biffle, though losing both would put the organization in an even tougher spot. If Stenhouse is the only carryover driver into 2015, he needs to step it up and prove he's ready for a leadership role. Maybe the changes would be good for him, but with his lack of progress this year, it's not something you can take to the bank. Trevor Bayne could be a candidate for the #16 if Biffle left, but I don't see him in the #99. He's more of a supporting cast guy, even without the questions about his long-term health. The younger drivers in the Roush development pipeline aren't anywhere near ready to move up to Cup yet. I agree, they'd have to look at outside candidates, and it's hard to say who would be on the short list. They could make a pitch to someone like Martin Truex Jr., he'd certainly have better support from Roush than Furniture Row even if Roush isn't at the elite level they once were. Aric Almirola has made progress with Petty and could probably win a race or two with Roush. But could either of those guys be an immediate title contender? That's going to be the expectation with the #99, and of the handful of drivers that have been championship threats but not won a title, is there one who would be ready to jump? 347. 1995 Subaru WRX STi posted: 05.16.2014 - 1:22 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "It's a great insight into one of nascar's greatest unknowns, whatever became of the phenom known as Casey Atwood." Casey was ruined because he came up too soon. Plus he was driving for Ray Evernham (at the start they weren't very good but got better). Casey also came in when NASCAR was going up (stopped going up in 2008), althought rides were available back then, they were already filled up. Going too the #7 team did him no favors (they stunk period). I think had if Casey won in Homestead in 2001 and Richmond in 2004 (N'wide) i think he'd still be around. 348. murb posted: 05.16.2014 - 3:27 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) The reason Casey Atwood didn't pan out is because Ray Evernham was an absolute moron as a team owner. After a slow start to his rookie campaign, Casey was coming along just fine in late 2001. He won the pole and was one of the dominant cars at Phoenix along with Rusty Wallace (before they both had tire problems), and he also almost won Homestead. So what did Evernham do? Instead of building and growing with Atwood, he chose Jeremy Mayfield (a proven inconsistent driver who was also known for burning bridges) instead, and demoted Atwood to the Jim Smith satellite team that had no chance whatsoever of running well. Had Casey gotten the opportunity to stay in the 19 car for 2002 and gain on his late 2001 momentum, I think he would have been okay, and he'd probably still be in Cup. It probably wouldn't have worked out with Evernham since that organization was such a cluster, but he would have at least been able to keep his name out there, and he probably would have ended up with another team. But like he always did when he was an owner, Ray Evernham had to go and screw it all up. 349. Of course he flattened Kurt's nose in 03 but other than that (and a random top five in the 600) he did squat. Casey always impressed me in the 14 car. Ran pretty consistent and never tore up equipment, but his last real chance after he was let go was with the Brewco team which catapulted him to fame. And he mustered a best of 14th before winding up starting and parking the 05 car which is the last I could recall of him until today. 350.
