Kevin Harvick broke the Texas track record in the opening 30-min session with a lap of 198.282 mph, which is the fastest lap ever recorded on a 1.5 mile track in NASCAR! Listening to the in-car camera, he was barely cracking the throttle in the turns. How about Trevor Bayne in that Wood Bros. Ford?? This track is really something special for him. He got his first Cup start here in Nov. 2010 and his first Nationwide win a year later. Jimmie Johnson fails to make the final group round of qualifying for the first time all year, leaving Joey Logano as the only driver to do so. 3. I don't know how long BK Racing will put up with Truex's DNQ's and wrecked race cars, especially when his teammate is running *marginally* OK in the same equipment. Wood Brothers seem to have some speed this weekend, I don't know why they only run that team part time, they have decent cars, a solid if unspectacular driver under contract, and what appears to be consistent sponsorship from Motorcraft. 4. cjs3872 posted: 04.05.2014 - 4:51 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The reason why the Wood Brothers only run a partial schedule is simple, Sarf52. They're only sponsored for 12 races, and they're not going to run any more races than the sponsorship allows them to run, and they've always focused on the bigger tracks. But since the Motorcraft sponsorship is only for 12 races annually, that's all they're going to run. Even tracks that they used win regularly at, such as Darlington and Atlanta, are tracks they no longer run at because they don't have sponsorship for those races. After all, in the latter 2000s, they found out the hard way what happens when a team as small as theirs is gets overtaxed. For them, quality is more important than quantity. 5. It is doing to rain in the day tomorrow, but it isn't likely to rain at night. That means there is going to be no rubber on the surface when the race starts tomorrow and there would be tire problems if the race starts at night. 13. Over 5 MPH slower than his teammate? I know that Bowman is a better driver than Ryan is, and that Texas may be Bowman's best track (he swept the poles for the NNS races there last year) but that's utterly ridiculous. Bowman's speed was over 194 and Ryan Truex couldn't even get to 190. Of course, none of the Toyotas did that well, as only one (Denny Hamlin) qualified in the top 20, and only two advanced past first round qualifying (Hamlin and Brian Vickers). And as joey2448 noted in post #2, Harvick ran over 198 and Trevor Bayne over 197 in first round qualifying. Any more evidence that the cars need to be slowed down? And with the Wood Brothers car up there in the top ten, that could be an optimum opportunity for a team starting further back in the field to use the #21 team to get a better pit position, since they'll likely fall off the lead lap at some point, mainly due to the pit crew. And I know that if I were up there starting among the 5th through 8th rows and had a really good car, I would want to get around that #21 car, because that car could split the front runners from the rest of the field early in the race, because Bayne's almost always a slow starter. The drivers starting on the outside of rows 4, 5, 6, and 7 could be in a prime position to move up early in the race because of a potentially balky car up among the leaders at the start. But I look for tomorrow to be a big day for the Fords, because every significant Ford, except for the #17 of Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. qualified in the first nine rows. Among the others, the lowest qualifier was Aric Almirola in 17th. 20. 23andJoe posted: 04.05.2014 - 5:38 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) >and they may decide to put a vet they trust to not DNQ and tear up cars in. *cough* David Reutimann *cough* Oh wait... >The speed by Harvick in the first round is why NASCAR wants to slow the cars down. But they're going about it the wrong way, I think. Going to smaller engines will just mean they can keep it wide open even more - the problem isn't so much the speed ITSELF, or the engines, but rather that they can just keep the cars flat through the corners now at virtually every track, which (in addition to Too Much Speed) reduces driver skill requirements and makes it harder to pass. The solution is to make drivers have to lift in the corners again. Whoever figures out how, though, will be a genius... 21. 02Justin10 posted: 04.05.2014 - 5:44 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) #20 I agree...taking away power will do nothing to *fix* NASCAR's racing, or make it more thrilling or whatever...as Ryan Newman said Friday on FS1, NASCAR needs to strip the cars of downforce...keep all the power, but just make it so that everyone has to fight their cars and pedal through the corners...I think that would work...so I agree with everything 23andJoe said. 22. cjs3872 posted: 04.05.2014 - 5:48 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) But 23andJoe, before they can really go through any kind of measures to make them harder to drive, they have to cut horsepower, or the cars will be undriveable, and the tires would never last. I think that if they can slow the cars down by about 15 MPH, then they can start tinkering with the aerodynamics and tires to make the cars harder to drive. Part of the reason for the speed increase is the lower of the weight of the cars by 200lbs., which was done when they introduced this car, because by lowering the weight of the cars, they made them easier to drive through the corners. Getting rid of the ride height rule for this year is a reason the cars are significantly faster this year than they were last year, because they're now closer to the ground, and can actually use some ground effects, which suck them down even more. But before they can make the cars harder to drive to where they have to back off at this size of track, they have to be slowed down first, and the way to do that is to take horsepower away. And they can't run softer tires, which would put the race more into the driver's hands, until they slow them down, either. Slowing the cars down is the key to being able to make these other adjustments. 23. Gordon is going for a third consecutive 38th place finish at Texas, a track that he's has never been weak at, but always extremely unlucky. --In 1997 he was dominating the event, only to be caught up in an accident in the dogleg. --In 1999 he took over second place from Dale Jarrett, only to cut a tire in the exit of turn 4, resulting in the worst crash of Gordon's career and his first 43rd place finish. --In 2007, he crushed the field in the spring, only to hit the wall in the turn 4 exit and faded to fourth. In 2007, he would have locked up the title in the fall under the latford system. Instead he saw Jimmie Johnson take the points lead for good with only two race to go. --In the 2008 spring event, he had what is easily his worst career race, spinning on his own in turn four and spending so much time in the garage, he finished 43rd for the second, and so far, last time. --In 2010, He had a super dominant car in the spring and was crashed. And in the fall he was crashed by Jeff Burton. --In 2013 he swept 38th place, retiring from 3rd in the spring and losing a tire while running in the Top 10 in the fall. The good thing is that he actually has a win here in 2009, over Jimmie Johnson. The problem with his win, is that it's book-ended with the two longest losing streaks of his career. 47 and 66. 34. numbah10hatah posted: 04.05.2014 - 7:56 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Proof about Duck Commander: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zsObP7UL2vQ 35. numbah10hatah posted: 04.05.2014 - 7:56 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zsObP7UL2vQ 36. cjs3872 posted: 04.05.2014 - 7:57 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) And they've reduced the weight of the cars by 500 lbs. since 1986, 1995 Subaru. In 1986, the cars weighed 3700 lbs., and they reduced the weight by 200 lbs. in 1987 to 3500 lbs., and the speeds went up then. They reduced them another 100 lbs. in the mid-90s to 3400 lbs., but it had little impact on the speeds, which went up due to the tire war between Goodyear and Hoosier in 1994. And the weight of the cars remained 3400 lbs. until last year, when it was reduced again to 3200 lbs., and the speeds went up again. When you decrease the weight of the cars, you make them easier to drive because there's not as much to drive. But if the cars weren't going close to 210 entering the corners, they wouldn't be threatening a 200 MPH lap on these mid-size tracks. That's why they need to be slowed down first. But if you make changes at the current horsepower and speed levels, you're only risking big problems with tires blowing out left and right. Did Charlotte in 2005 and Indy in 2008 teach us nothing? Now, what happened at Indy in 2008 was a car issue, not a speed issue, but what happened at Charlotte in 2004-'05 was certainly a speed, track, and tire issue. But one other thing. Every time NASCAR has tried to take downforce and grip away from the cars, it has had a disastrous impact on the racing. One of the worst races anyone will ever see on a speedway took place in the fall race at Charlotte in 1993, when Ernie Irvan led all but six laps of that 500-mile race, nearly lapping the entire field in less than 200 miles, and the cars could not get anywhere near each other. That came because of an aero change that debuted in that race, as well as a narrowing of the tire. And that season's finale at Atlanta was a crashfest, again because of the narrower tires. The next time we saw a change aimed at the aerodynamics of the cars was the infamous "5 & 5" rule in 1998, and that produced a season's worth of bad races, one of the most dominant seasons any driver has ever had, and two drivers winning 20 of 33 races. In fact, the best race of that season may well have been the season finale in Atlanta, when NASCAR added the downforce it took away early that season. So history says that anytime that NASCAR takes away downforce from these cars, it makes the racing worse, not better. And if you take away the downforce from the cars at the current speeds and with the horsepower they now have, every car will be out of control, even on the straightaway. Slow the speeds 15 MPH on the mid-sized tracks, and then work on the other factors, if needed. You don't need 12-15 cars wrecked every week to put on a good race. But you do need good competition, and history shows that reducing downforce with the current speeds and horsepower will reduce competition, not enhance it. 37. They need someone who won't tear anything up, and someone who will also be a positive influence to somewhat of a scatter brained team. So I think someone like Riggs would be perfect. Wasn't NASCAR's new policy of fining drivers for knocking sponsor displays off the cars the reason for Jeff Gordon parking his car on the start-finish at Indy in 2004? Mr X posted: 04.06.2014 - 4:24 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Taking away horsepower is not the way to slow the cars down. If any of you watched qualifying today you'll know that Kevin Harvick's record setting 27.23 second 198+mph lap was shown on FS1 from the in car camera, and even with the apparently too powerful 875-925hp engine's the audio will tell you that Kevin never lifted in turns 1 and 2, or if he did lift it was so marginal that I couldn't make it out with the motor bogging down a little bit as he went through the corner. Once he got to turn 3 he did partially lift to what sounded like between 25-50% throttle for about 2 seconds before planting his foot again. He never completely lifted, and he was wide open for about 95% of that lap. I know this is qualifying trim but half of the intermediates will become mini Talladega's and Daytona's if they take away any power. With less power the pole laps at TMS and many similar tracks will be wide open in the coming years. Laps during the race will be one step closer to wide open, and they're already too close IMO. I agree that you don't have to wreck 12-15 cars to have a good race but the drivers do have to actually drive to have an actual race, because as Big E once said, restrictor plate racing isn't racing, and while NASCAR isn't going to that extreme, taking away power just makes handling less important which tightens the field, its the same principle. The cars are faster everywhere then they used to be, they're going into turn 1 at 200-210mph, but a huge part of those speeds are proportional to the 180mph turn 4 exit speeds. During the 1997 running of the Winston the broadcast crew, Buddy Baker specifically if my memory serves me right, mentioned during the telecast(find it on youtube) that Robert Yates, one of NASCAR's most legendary engine builders was cranking about 740hp from his Ford Cleveland based engines. 150-200hp less then the non-production based race engines of today. Keep in mind that this is just about six months prior to Geoff Bodine's 197mph q-lap at Atlanta, a record which stood at 1.5 mile ovals until today. With any change you make to the cars, the results may vary depending on what track you're at. Taking away power will drastically slow lap times at Indy, Pocono, Fontana, Michigan, and Watkins Glen, where long hard pulls (with tall gears and hills) from relatively low engine speeds all the way to nearly 10 grand are the name of the game. Bristol, Richmond, Dover, and many intermediates will see only marginally slower lap times simply because you don't actually spend that much time on the straights. In F1 the same principles apply, when F1 made the change from the 3.0Litre V10's to the 2.4Litre V8's for the 2006 and went from 900 to 700 hp many tracks didn't slow down all that much, especially once the slick tires replaced the grooved tires, (DRS and KERS would later contribute as well.) The track record at Monaco was set in 2011, because engine power means very little there, meanwhile at Monza they've always been at least a second off of Rubens Barrichello's 80.089 second pole time from 2004. I definitely think the cars have been a little to stable at speed in recent years, (this wasn't a problem in the 1990's during NASCAR's last escapades with reducing downforce,) and I definitely think that they could certainly afford to give up both some aero and mechanical grip, with less downforce, and narrower tires, but keep the current engines. Make the cars more difficult, and reduce these aero issues in the long run, as always with major rule changes, the teams will work their way through the teething problems. I wouldn't even be opposed to NASCAR letting teams run roller camshafts like the Nationwide and Truck series do, as opposed to the flat tappet bumpsticks the cup cars run for reasons I don't understand. Danny Sullivan was on Wind Tunnel several years ago near the end of the 2011 racing season and the topic of discussion was how to make more wow moments in NASCAR, to which he said, MORE POWER, LESS DOWNFORCE! 46. Ideally it would have more ovals and natural road courses and fewer street courses, but the circuits are certainly more diverse than circuits on the Cup schedule, and listing Daytona/Talladega separately and Charlotte/Atlanta/Homestead doesn't help your case. Yeah, I know Charlotte, Atlanta, and Homestead have differences, but they're much smaller than even the differences between Formula One's Tilkedromes. I would assume WRC is the MOST diverse considering it has wildly divergent terrain... Trying to argue Cup has the most diverse schedule is laughable (you could have made a better argument for this around 1994 than now). It's more diverse than early IRL and maybe sprint car racing, but that's about it... Even ARCA is more diverse... Too bad that series is mostly a joke. "Why would guys like Derrike Cope and Mike Skinner even be in consideration when you could get guys like Mike Bliss, Scott Riggs or Bobby Labonte." What does Bobby Labonte have to offer besides a past champion's provisional? I can't understand why Cope and Skinner are being grouped together here when Skinner clearly seemed to be the better driver, and more recently too. I wouldn't hire him for a Cup ride or probably even a truck ride now, but regardless of Cope's two Cup wins, Skinner was the better driver. 56. numbah10hatah posted: 04.06.2014 - 12:57 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Sean: If Bobby Labonte were put in the 83, not only would they have the Past Champ Provisional, they would also have a veteran presence on that team. BK Racing wants to grow as an organization and to do that it needs a driver who can a.) get better and b.) not cost too much. Drivers around age 20 have much greater scope for improvement than drivers around age 50 and drivers around age 20 are much more willing to work for low pay than drivers around age 50. If Truex can't cut it in the 83 BK Racing would be better advised to try another young driver than to try an older driver long past his prime. As for mentoring, the garage is full of drivers that are only too happy to pass along what they know, especially to drivers on underfunded, uncompetitive teams. 59. cjs3872 posted: 04.06.2014 - 1:26 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I slightly disagree, Mr X. There's no question that the cars are easier to drive, and that things could be done to make them somewhat harder to drive. But I think the horsepower needs to be reduced first. After that, then you can take some of the handling aspects away. The question is, what would you do? Frankly, one thing that keeps getting lost is that the cars are easier to drive because they're lighter than they've ever been. Last year, they reduced the weight of the cars by 200 lbs., and they reduced the weight of the cars by 500 lbs. since 1986. That's one reason they drive good. There's simply not as much to drive as there used to be. One thing they can do is to reinstate the minimum ride height rule to get them off the ground, and they wouldn't even have to reduce horsepower to do that. And on top of that, make it a 5 or 6" clearance, instead of the 4" it was before. That would also make it easier on pit crews, because part of the problems they're having on pit stops is getting the front tires off because there's no clearance to even do that. The next thing that could be done in regards to the aerodynamics is getting rid of those flares you see on the front corners, which add downforce to both sides of the front end. Reinstating the ride height rule, increasing it to 5 or 6", and getting rid of those flared-out fenders are good places to start reducing the aerodynamics. But every time NASCAR does something like that, the teams simply find ways to get the aerodynamics back, so anything NASCAR does in that regard is just a short-term effort anyway. Another reason horsepower needs to be taken away to slow the cars down is simply to make the racing better. It's a known fact that these cars simply can't race competitively for more than a few laps at the speeds they're going because they can't stay close together at that speed. If they slow the cars down 15 MPH on the big tracks, I think they'll make the racing better, because it will allow them to stay closer together for a longer period of time. Also, if they slow the cars down, then Goodyear will have the option of bringing a different tire compound to the track that wears more, but now they have to bring the hardest tires they can bring simply because softer tires will not stand the speeds that are run today, because if they being a softer tire, they'll blow out after just 50 miles because they can't handle the speed. 60. This isn't like when Bill Elliott mentored Casey Atwood and Evernham and was still capable of winning races. I don't know how much you can learn from a formerly very good but now washed-up driver... It would be like somebody being mentored by Rusty Wallace at this point, who retired almost a decade ago but has STILL won more recently (and was far better overall). I kind of think the same sort of thoughts whenever I hear the perennial rumor that Ray Evernham will return to Hendrick because he and Jeff Gordon used to have such great chemistry. He has not been a crew chief for almost 15 years. He'd be lost trying to figure out today's cars, I think, as all his contemporaries have been with the sole exception of Jimmy Fennig, the last of the '90s crew chiefs who is still relevant. I liked it (although I tuned in a few laps late and was only half-watching parts of it), but emphasizing Mercedes's dominance is not the way to get people to watch. It IS one of the most interesting things about this season - particularly watching the top-tier Red Bull/Ferrari drivers having to battle with weaker drivers in the more dominant Mercedes engines... And I liked that Rosberg raced Hamilton hard and that Mercedes doesn't seem to have a preferred driver this year, but I think most NASCAR fans would still be turned off by the lack of parity to the point that washed-up drivers like Button and Massa, unproven rookies like Magnussen, and ride-buyers like Perez can be as competitive as Vettel and Alonso solely because of the dominance of the Mercedes engines. Not that F1 was ever supposed to BE about parity (and many would say Cup should never have gone down that road either...) I do find it funny everybody was whining about Nico Hulkenberg not landing the Lotus ride when that turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as he ended up with a supposedly "weaker" team that had Mercedes engines and then turned out to be one of the stronger teams as a result, and is now 3rd in points ahead of almost all the stars... 72. numbah10hatah posted: 04.06.2014 - 2:03 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) In other news, MWR will continue their tradition of honoring College Football champions with a special FSU scheme. All in the Family Roseanne (succeeds in spite of lead actress's ego, not because of her...I won't attempt to defend the last 3 seasons though) Barney Miller Night Court The Wonder Years (the writing transcends me disliking every single character - which is very similar to my opinion of Freaks and Geeks except that the writing is worse) Soap Jeopardy! (although I've stopped watching because of Alex Trebek's dirty old man jokes...it was better when he didn't believe HE was the show) Gilmore Girls (I watched lots of small town dramas. Almost all of them start out great and turn to garbage - Twin Peaks, Picket Fences, Northern Exposure...I was truly surprised that THIS was the show that stayed good start to finish) The O.C. Ghostwriter (one of the only kid's shows that I think would hold up if I saw it again now) Burnt out on The Simpsons when I was a kid and now I have the misfortune of associating it with all sorts of other garbage kids' shows I used to watch (TGIF, etc..., Dinosaurs - which I thought was BETTER than "The Simpsons" when I was a kid, but it clearly wasn't). I'm constantly like 10 or 15 years behind though. I'll eventually get to the more innovative dramas everyone slobbers over at some point. "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" is what I think I want to get to next since I enjoy that loose genre so much ("Joan of Arcadia"/"Wonderfalls") and I tend to like most teen dramas that don't completely insult the intelligence (although some would say "The O.C." does that...) Things I'm surprised I didn't like based on other things I like: Taxi - I tend to like all workplace dramas and I like several of the cast members here, but Danny DeVito just ruins it for me, the way Roseanne ruins Roseanne for other people thirtysomething - Made by the creators of MSCL, but I don't care. This is like the most smug show in the history of television, without being good enough to justify its smugness (which "The West Wing" at least was in the Sorkin years) Freaks and Geeks - Again, as with the other two, I'm not gonna say this sucks but when I hear everybody talking about it as THE prematurely cancelled show to find that I loathed every character, didn't find the plotlines all that realistic, and didn't find the supposedly funny characters funny, it didn't sit well. It remains watchable unlike Apatow's followup Undeclared, which is also critically acclaimed but is TOTAL garbage. Newsradio - I only gave it like 4 episodes so maybe this is unfair, but it is nowhere NEAR as funny as WKRP, which did a great job with the same kind of material and several of the characters felt like ripoffs. There are other shows I like that kind of fall in the middle that I wouldn't list as favorites (like "Boy Meets World" and "Dinosaurs", the only two TGIF shows that had MOMENTS of decency...yet back when I was like 9 they were ALL among my favorite shows...sigh...) 165. Go on the AVClub some time, where it is the butt of jokes, especially since that site tends to hype up its current time slot competitor "Community". BBT is an average show - I don't think it's either good or bad. The problem is it's like a second-tier show being elevated to first-tier (same as HIMYM probably) because there are no popular first-tier sitcoms now... Back in the '90s when so many classic sitcoms were on, there were lots of second-tier shows like "Doogie Howser", "Coach", "Home Improvement", "Boy Meets World", etc... that didn't suck exactly and had some funny moments but a lot of moments when they were complete garbage too. BBT is that kind of show, but the problem is that there are no mainstream first-tier shows to compare it to, so it ends up hyped as "the best sitcom on television" when none of those earlier shows would have been considered that back then... 182. Speaking of TV shows, I loved RPM2Night as a kid, but hate the idea now because it was designed to hype NASCAR as the center of the racing universe and gave too little attention to other forms of racing. Having said that, I suppose that's better than now, where NO form of racing other than NASCAR gets any kind of mainstream attention, and it was a gateway for me as a NASCAR-only fan to discover open wheel (I had already watched the 1995 Indy 500, but I didn't really "get" CART until around 1997 and 1998, but still watched NASCAR instead and only watched half the CART races then...I have watched them all on YouTube since.) 193. cjs3872 posted: 04.06.2014 - 6:26 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @186, they had Hamlin on Raceday on FS1, not on the actual rain fill on FOX itself. I was referring to the 3 hours they had on FOX from 2:30pm EDT-5:30 EDT. And it was three hours, not two and a half as I had stated in post #185. You would think that they would have the guys that would actually be a part of the race, not some of those at the back of the field like Gilliland or Stenhouse. Not to slight those guys at the back, because it's also good that they are not totally ignored and that those covering the race actually realizes they exist, but it would have been good to have more of the guys up front interviewed. When the two front row starters are not interviewed, something's definitely wrong. 194. murb posted: 04.06.2014 - 6:29 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I'm really looking forward to NBC Sports taking over though. I'm a Jeff Burton fan, so this might be a little bias, but I think he's gonna be a great analyst. I wasn't sure how he would do when I first heard he would be an analyst, but after watching him on Nascar America it seems like he's gonna be really good. He's really insightful, but he's also not boring at all really, and that was one of the things I was worried about with him. I think Letarte will be good too. And then Rick Allen will be the play by play guy, and I think he's easily one of the best play by play guys in Nascar today (maybe THE best). So I really think we have good things coming with NBC Sports as far as race coverage goes. But in the early '90s, ESPN covered lots of stuff they wouldn't dream of covering now. IMSA sports car racing (now relegated to FS1), IndyCar feeder series (now on NBC Sports), Trans-Am (now no longer televised), USAC/WoO (now no longer televised), Thursday Night Thunder (now no longer televised), Mickey Thompson Stadium Trucks (revived by Robby Gordon but now no longer televised). That being said I really don't watch that many movies or TV shows. There are really only a handful of shows that are currently producing episodes that I keep up with, the British version of Top Gear has been my favourite show for several years although the show isn't what it was just a few years ago, like NASCAR they appear to be catering to the casual viewer over the hardcore car guru like myself, too many obviously scripted moments. I like the Daily Show, and the Colbert Report, and I really like the new show At Midnight. Trying to run races in the eastern part of the country in February and March just invites problems with weather. In fact, there have been only two races so far this season (out of seven) not impacted by weather, and those races were predictably at Las Vegas and Fontana, CA. Even the racing at Phoenix was somewhat impacted by weather. Every race they've tried to run east of the Rocky Mountains so far this season has, in some way, been adversely impacted by bad weather, all four of them. I still think NASCAR should try to do some kind of western swing right after the Daytona 500, and run races at Phoenix, Fontana, Las Vegas, and Texas, in no particular order, as races 2-5 of the season, since the chances of those races being impacted by cold or bad weather are far less than they are in the southeast. Not only that, but having the teams criss-cross back and forth across the country when they can run a string of races out west and not have to worry about the weather quite as much. I would not run a race in the southeast, or anywhere near the east coast after the Daytona 500 until April, because of the predictability of bad weather in that part of the country. I'm not saying that you're not going to run into bad weather on the west coast in February or March, but the chances of running into bad weather out there are far, far less. Running at Bristol in mid-March and Martnsville in late-March? They're just asking for trouble in regards to the weather, and they've certainly got it. This year might be worse than normal, but trying to run races in the southeast and Mid-Atlantic region this early in the year is just inviting bad weather to intervene. It's just happening a little more than normal this year. 230. Sector posted: 04.06.2014 - 7:38 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Can anyone give me a good link to a livestream of all the upcoming races? And yes, Gordon was right behind him that day, as well. As weak as Gordon says he is at Texas, his overall history there seems to tell a different story, as he has been a dominant factor there more than he lets on. He had this race won in 2004, but a battery problem late in the race dropped him to third place as Elliott Sadler won. He had it won in 2007 before he hit the wall exiting turn four, and Jeff Burton passed Matt Kenseth on the last lap to get the win. Of course, he won this race in 2009, snapping a long winless streak. Then he dominated this race in 2010, but a combination of pit strategies by his and other teams (Steve Letarte seemed off his game that year) and being back in traffic, got him wrecked on a late restart, and his was the only Chevrolet capable of running with the Toyotas in this race last year in what was his best run all year on this type of track, which was cut short when something broke in the rear suspension. Even the inaugural race in 1997 seemed to be Jeff's for the taking, but he got caught out when Ernie Irvan was racing him and Terry Labonte to the line to the caution to get a lap back, and ran into Greg Sacks, and Gordon had no place to go, but into Irvan. So Gordon's been better at Texas than he sometimes lets on, even though he only has the one win in 2009. 238. Rest in Peace...the greatest gimmick in pro wrestling. 242. Jarrett88fan posted: 04.06.2014 - 10:47 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I am with you in mourning DSFF. I first started watching wrestling in 1999 when he was in the middle of his boring (in my opinion) Ministry of Darkness storyline, so I first became a fan of him when he returned in 2000 as the American Badass character. So I guess the first specific memory that made my jaw drop would probably be when he threw Rikishi off the Hell In a Cell at Armageddon. But then later I went back and rented a bunch of tapes of previous Wrestlemanias and other PPVs and saw a lot of his classic matches (the Yokozuna Casket match, the KOTR 1998 Hell In a Cell vs Mankind, etc). Yeah, I definitely have a lot of memories of The Undertaker. I haven't regularly watched wrestling since about 2006, so I don't know what he's been up to lately, but it is pretty bittersweet to hear about his Wrestlemania win streak ending. He's one of the all time greats of the WWF/WWE, no doubt about it. 245. Jim Davis posted: 04.06.2014 - 11:31 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "Webb and Morgan do a superb job with acting..." Because at Daytona when Truex didn't qualify they reprinted Bowman's car with Borla Exhaust logos (Truexs sponsor) so I was wondering if Dr. Pepper actually pays to sponsor the car, or if the owners of the team just have interests in the company" I checked the parent companies of Burger King and Doctor Pepper, they are not part of the same corporation. The two do have a long standing relationship in as far as Doctor Pepper being served at BK, and shared promotional tie-ins. So, in answer to your question, Doctor Pepper is probably a "real" sponsor bringing in some extra funding, but they didn't walk in off the street and choose the BK organization at random. I also discovered Doctor Pepper originated in Texas, which would explain why they picked this race as one of the events they would be on the #23 as a primary sponsor. The other dates may have some room for negotiation between BK and Doctor Pepper, in the case of something like the Borla swap at Daytona. In other sponsor trivia, I found that Doctor Pepper's parent company is the Snapple group of brands, which includes Country Time Lemonade and many others. Those of us who've been around NASCAR for a while remember Country Time as a former sponsor (though they were under different ownership back then). 254. numbah10hatah posted: 04.07.2014 - 12:01 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Yeah baby! It got so far as negotiations with the track and the IRL to get an official date when the news broke that Pep Boys was leaving as title sponsor, which led to the schedule contracting for 2000 and all potential races put on hold. And it was later proven that the then-new 2000 model of IRL car was unsuitable for the track as it inaugurated the era of pack racing in the IRL. The IRL then started courting Richmond as it's "southeastern race", which actually did happen. But being an NC native, I always wonder how the IRL would have done there and how successful the race would have been. 594. And he would likely have finished higher than 19th if he had stayed out and taken the wave-around on that last caution, as three other cars that were one lap down did. In fact, he was 16th when that last caution came out, just behind Carl Edwards, who was one of the favorites going onto the race. Actually, he was running sixth or seventh when the competition caution came out, but predictably he dropped back with his slow pit crew. I think that Roush should look at giving Bayne his NNS pit crew when he runs the #21 car, because it would then give them a competitive pit crew, something they don't have currently. I actually think that the #21 car can run in the top ten, or perhaps even better on a good day, if they had a competitive pit crew. And Bayne might not be in that car for much longer if Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. continues to stink it up like he has been, because he's run 25th or worse quite frequently on this style of track most of the year. Heck, even Danica was in front of him most of the day. If this continues, Roush may seriously need to consider the possibility of putting Bayne in that #17 car beginning in mid-to-late August when the NNS and Cup Series join up for the rest of the year, except for one weekend. Surely, he can't do any worse than Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. is doing in that car. And not only did Joey Logano have four tires on that last two-lap run than Gordon did, but he also had a much faster car. The fact that Gordon wasn't passed until turn one of the last lap tells me that Gordon wanted it as much, if not more than Logano did, but Logano had a car that was about a third of a second per lap faster at that time. But here's something. The fact that the top two in points currently don't have a win and that there have been seven winners in the first seven races raises the possibility that leading the points after the 26th race may not get you in the Chase this year, because it looks like there might be 16 winners by the 26th race, and if the points leader is not ne of those winners, he gets locked out of the Chase if there are exactly 16 winners at that time. And also, I think NASCAR is going to have a little talk with Chad Knaus, because there's no way that window brace should have buckled like that, or been allowed to be as unsteady as it was. There shouldn't ever be a window brace that can't hold up, and that one clearly didn't, nor should it be allowed to have more holes in it than Swiss cheese. In fact, it wasn't even holding the windshield up. Then when you saw the window braces from inside the #13 car, you can see how they're supposed to be put on, and how sturdy a window brace is supposed to be, because those braces were much sturdier and on the windshield, unlike the ones in the #48 car. So I think NASCAR's going to have a little talk with Chad Knaus about those window braces, which were obviously not sturdy enough, nor put on correctly, and that's a safety risk no crew chief should ever take, nor be allowed to take. And I would say that if they do it again, harsh penalties will be coming, because the one thing that can not be compromised under any circumstances, is safety. And Chad Knaus compromised the safety of his own driver with that little stunt. 596. A good move by NASCAR. * An epic fail for Dale Earnhardt Jr. in this race, somehow completely forgetting the grass was there and his splitter caught it and he sent mud and sod through Jimmie Johnson and Junior hit the wall with a cut tire and flames. Everytime I see him on fire, I think of his Sports car wreck back in 2004, he got burned in that one bad, this one had the flames going away from the car, and that is a good sign, away from the driver. Junior got away uninjured, but he just pissed away his points lead, not that that matters this early. To me, I guess he just midsjdged it, but it was still was a sorry mistake. * All the engine fails for the Haas guys, Kevin Harvick has had mechanical failures all year, Kurt Busch crashed out and had some engine troubles. * Jimmie Johnson's got some extra greenery on his Spring is Calling car which already has green on it for spring, Johnson was behind the Dale Earnhardt Jr. mess and his teammates sorry move ruined Johnson's day which he got a 25th out of, but they did fix the junk heap enough to get Johnson something... * Clint Bowyer's sponsor should read Willie's Duck Diner/Duck Commander...there are three sponsors on that car. * Congratulations on the Robertson family business getting sponsorship for this race. This is his fourth year with them now, and in that time frame they've run solid for the most part. So it is possible that you could be 2nd in points and miss the Chase under the new system. I don't think it's time to throw Stenhouse to the curb yet. This is just his 2nd full season in Cup, and he has almost matched his top 5 and top 10 totals from last year. Although this was the 3rd race in a row they've had Ford EcoBoost on the car. I don't know that they're really so much a sponsor, but more like doing Jack a favor and covering his unsponsored races. If his issues getting sponsorship start affecting his Cup program I could see him dropping Ricky first. And my last point is about the window brace thing. The question then becomes, what happens with the #21 car. That may be the one reason why Roush doesn't do that. Instead, what I could see happening is that Roush either moves Bayne to the #17 in the races where the #21 doesn't compete in and has a veteran driver complete the season in the #17 when the #21 does run, or just replace Stenhouse with a veteran driver like one of the Labonte brothers or someone of that ilk, and the put Bayne in that car for next year. Either way, I think if Bayne's in the Cup Series for Roush next year, that whatever car he drives will be renumbered to the #6. And that begs another question. If Bayne does move from the Wood Brothers to a full-time Cup ride, who gets the #21 car next? I think that would be a good spot for Ryan Blaney to get some Cup experience, but the whole Penske-Roush situation would probably mess that up. The younger Blaney's already confirmed for at least one race in the #12 car for Penske this year, anyway. And speaking of that, Joey Logano's win made him the youngest-ever Cup winner at Texas, breaking the previous record held by Ryan Newman, who was driving for the exact same team then that Logano drove for today, as what's now the #22 team was the #12 team for many years. And seeing Jeff Gordon be so competitive this year, even though he hasn't won yet (wouldn't it be fitting if his first win came next week with an unprecedented seventh Southern 500 win?), it kind-of reminds me of about 30 years ago when Mario Andretti and Al Unser returned to prominence in IndyCar racing in the mid 1980s (except for what Al had done in 1978, neither had been a force in IndyCar racing for many years), racing and winning championships against a much younger field of drivers. What Jeff's doing this year may be starting to remind me of what Mario and Al did back in the mid 1980s, trading the championship three consecutive years from 1983-'85 while both were in their mid 40s and racing against drivers 15 years younger than they were. 603. In fact, as hard as it might be to believe, Ford products won that race six consecutive years from 1971-'76. And that's one of the NASCAR majors that Jeff Gordon happens to be the winningest driver of, as he's that race's only 4-time winner. That is why I compare the traditions of the Masters and the Southern 500 at Darlington. I's true that the Masters is the youngest of the four majors, but it arguably has the most tradition tied to it because it's played at the same venue each and ever year, while the others rotate. In fact, the slogan for the Masters is "a tradition unlike any other", because it's played at the same venue every year. (And by the way, ESPN Classic is running a marathon of virtually every Masters film since they started putting out an annual film in 1960, beginning tonight and lasting until ESPN's first-round coverage begins at 4 PM EDT Thursday.) But the fact that Masters is played at the same venue every year makes it venue where more history has been made than any other, and of the majors in NASCAR, I would compare it to the Southern 500, which has had more history made than any other major race on the NASCAR circuit, as this coming weekend's edition will be the 65th Southern 500. I would compare the Daytona 500 and the Brickyard 400 to the two Open championships, and you can switch out which one to which race, because they're interchangeable, while I would compare the Coca-Cola 600 to the PGA Championship, because it really is the weak sister of NASCAR's majors. It has it's own charm, such as that extra 100 miles or that it's the only one of NASCAR's four biggies that's scheduled to run at night, but it isn't even the biggest event held on that day within it's own sport. And the PGA Championship is the weak sister of the four golf majors, and some even argue that it's no longer one of the four biggest events in golf, that it's been supplanted by the Players Championship or even the Tour Championship at the end of the year. 633. From 1998-2009, the winner of the Brickyard 400 was also that season's champion an alarming number of times, including four consecutive years from 1998-2001, as well as in 2005-'06, and '08-'09. That means that the winner of the Brickyard 400 ended up being the champion eight times in 12 years, and that, like the similar trend regarding the Southern 500 in earlier years you brought up, is no accident to me. That's because the Southern 500 has always demanded the best of a driver, his team, and his equipment, and the same goes for the Brickyard 400. Both those races, more than the other big races on the circuit, have always tended to identify the best more than the others have. Except for 2011, when both races had somewhat accidental winners, if you look at the winner's list of both the Brickyard 400 and Southern 500, you'll see that the best of the best have usually been the ones to conquer those races. As Regan Smith said after he won the Southern 500 in 2011, the year all the big races had surprise winners, legends win the Southern 500, a group Matt Kenseth joined last year. Others on that list over the last 20 years include Jeff Burton, both Labonte brothers, Kyle Busch, Mark Martin, Denny Hamlin, Greg Biffle twice (successively), Jimmie Johnson twice, and of course, Jeff Gordon a record six times, including an unfathomable four consecutive from 1995-'98. Of the winners of the Southern 500 since 1967, only Smith and Ward Burton, who also has a Daytona 500 victory, have victory totals in the single digits, and winning that race was so difficult that three legends, Cale Yarborough, Bobby Allison, and David Pearson, won it 11 times in 13 years from 1971-'83, and Pearson had one of the other two locked up when he ran into an oil slick on the next-to-last lap in 1980. The Brickyard 400 now has the same reputation, as only the best drivers and teams win there. Of the first 16 Brickyard 400s, 14 were won by drivers that became, or already were series champions, and Ricky Rudd (1997) and Kevin Harvick (2003) won the other two. Even Jamie McMurray's win in 2010 was not as surprising as it appears, given his history of performing on the big stages, particularly that year, when he finished either first or second in every one of the biggest races on the circuit, including wins in the two biggest events. Even Ryan Newman's win in that race last year should not be all that surprising, considering who he was driving for and the amount of effort that Tony Stewart has always put into that race, not to mention the effort Newman himself has put into that race, since both Stewart and Newman raced in the shadows of IMS before graduating to the major leagues of American racing. In short, more than any of the other big races, the Brickyard 400 and the Southern 500, which is being run for the 65th time this weekend, have always identified the best in NASCAR more than any of the other big races have, hence the list of greats that have won each of those races, and the relative lack of upstart winners in both races. 639. There were two main reasons for that. The first was the lure of being involved in the first-ever NASCAR race at Indy. That race even saw the debut of Kranefuss-Haas Racing, which had veteran Indy and sports car driver Geoff Brabham. In fact, four Indianapolis 500 veterans, Brabhmam, John Andretti and former Indy winners Danny Sullivan and all-tie great A.J. Foyt not only attempted to qualify for that race, but al four qualified. (Sullivan even drew the race's first-ever penalty when his right side window blew out.) Veteran drivers such as H.B. Bailey were also among those there (Bailey, in fact, complete the very first qualifying attempt by a stock car at Indy), just to say they drove on that famous speedway, even though they had no chance of qualifying for that race. The other significant reason that race drew such a huge field of cars was that it was a combination race for both the Winston Cup Series and the Winston West series, meaning that all the teams that and drivers that ran the West series were there to join their Cup brethren. The only driver among that lot that qualified, Mike Chase, needed the Winston West provisional just to get in, but a reason you had such a big field of cars was that you actually had two complete NASCAR series competing there, much as was the case when the Daytona 500 was first run in 1959. But 1994 was the only year in which the West teams had a guaranteed spot, since it was the only year it was a combination race between the two series. As a result, had the champion's provisional been needed (it wasn't), there would have been a 44-car field for that race. 641. Heck, sections of Ontario were built with old bricks from Indy, both tracks held season finale dates for their biggest races, and both had successful AJ Foyt running. In fact, Foyt's win in that even was his second straight, and final in NASCAR, if memory serves me right. Both tracks were also considered 'ahead' of their time when they were built, even though Ontario was WAAAAAY to far ahead that even today we'd have trouble accommodating it. Interestingly, one of those drivers, Gary Bettenhausen, hadn't been in a NASCAR race since his 1974 sprint car crash. He had driven in NASCAR for Harry Ranier and Roger Penske, driving Penske's Matador some in 1974, when his younger brother Tony, Jr. ran the full NASCAR circuit. Heck, even Walter Ballard thought about trying to come out of retirement to attempt to qualify for that race, but either chose not to, or was not cleared to by NASCAR. And of course, P.J. Jones is the oldest son of 1963 Indianapolis 500 winner Parnelli Jones, who also won four NASCAR races, and drove in the Southern 500 as far back as 1956. And JG24FF, one reason why Regan Smith was able to hold off Carl Edwards in the 2011 Southern 500 was because tires didn't mean a whole lot that year, even at Darlington. Lap speeds will likely be in the 200-204 MPH range. Still, that's far too fast for these cars and that track. Remember what happened regarding tires two years ago when they began running those speeds. They wouldn't hold up, and they had to change tire compounds during the weekend's activities. Even the track's president isn't sure speeds like that are good for racing. But back to that top speed of 217 MPH. To give some perspective, that was about as fast as Bill Elliott's top straight line speed was when he ran that lap of 212.809 MPH at Talladega in 1987 in qualifying for that year's Winston 500, and we all know what happened in that race. Remember that they ran virtually wide open all the way around, so the top straight-line speed wasn't that much above the lap speeds, and they were running 209 MPH laps in that race, and the racing wasn't very good at all, particularly for Talladega standards, because the draft was really not much of a factor at all for one of the few times ever at Talladega. Benny Parsons even said in an ESPN replay of that race during the beginning of NASCAR's 50th Anniversary celebration that he had qualified at over 207 MPH in one of Rick Hendrick's cars, and he wasn't really in that race, but rather that he was "just there". 664. cjs3872 posted: 04.10.2014 - 2:38 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) That had to be more than a few years ago, David, because Texas World Speedway has been out of commission for more than a decade. In fact, in the mid 90s, when they were trying to resurrect Texas World Speedway (obviously before Texas Motor Speedway was built), NASCAR said that if they ran races there again, that they might need restrictor plates because of the higher speeds run there. TWS was banked at 20 degrees in the turns, which is why I was faster than Michigan, which has 18 degree banking in the turns. And D-666, they could never do that, not with the way tires are being torn up. If they can't stand Auto Club Speedway with top lap speeds in the low-mid 180s in the race, we know they won't be able to stand 200 MPH+. Just look at what happened just after the track was repaved. The tire situation was so bad that they had to change tire compounds in the middle of the weekend. And I would much rather see a competitive race at 180 than a race at higher speeds that's not nearly as competitive. In fact, I remember the commentators on CBS saying during the 1988 Daytona 500 that the racing was more competitive at the slower speeds run that year than the previous couple of years because the cars could run closer together with the restrictor plates. And they also mentioned that the fans would never actually notice the 10-15 MPH dropoff in speed, which is true. The fans can not see the difference between 185 and 200, either at the track or on TV, and it's a known fact that slower speeds leads to better racing because the cars can stay closer together. It was proven in the early-to-mid 70s when restrictor plates first came to NASCAR, it was proven in the mid 80s when speeds climbed over 200 MPH for the first time in NASCAR (they did not have one good race at Daytona from 1985 through the '87 Daytona 500 and only two of the five Talladega races during the same period were really competitive), and it's being proven again now. Faster speeds certainly wow the fans, especially when speed barriers are broken (Parnelli Jones and Tom Sneva are living proof of that), but higher speeds has never led to better racing. 665. Of that, I have no doubt. In fact, it started to widen out a little last August. My question is, how will the cars be able to race at those speeds, because of how close the cars would be able to stay together. That's my biggest worry, along with the tires which will be have to be the hardest compound Goodyear can make, because of the extreme speeds that will be run. After all, to make a good competitive race, the cars have to be able to stay close together, and the aerodynamics at those speeds make that extraordinarily difficult, if not impossible. And if the fans don't have stopwatches or aren't told by the PA or radio at the track, there's no way anyone watching would know, or can tell the difference between 185 and 205, and it's been proven that the quality of racing is better with slightly slower speeds, because they can stay closer together. The groove will widen out, but how close the cars can stay together is a question. And while everyone has been raving about the good competition this season, the speedway races have been bailed out by late cautions, as was the case at Texas, because Joey Logano was running away with that one because he was gone if not for the continuous tire problems Kurt Busch had, as his car was responsible for three different cautions, all for tire problems. And ironically, the best race this season, which was at Bristol, had that caution for the flagman bumping into the switch, causing the final caution, and he was bailed out by the rain that almost immediately followed, so the best race had an incomplete finish. Other than Kurt Busch's win at Martinsville and the final lap battle between Dale, Jr. and Brad Keselowski at Las Vegas, which ended a half lap before the finish, there really hasn't been a good race to the finish in a race that didn't have a late caution to set up the good finish. And the race at Fontana was an utter disaster from start to finish. 669. Biffle should be the measuring stick for Michigan based on the test since he's a 4 time winner there and Roush has a great history there. The other thing to look at is Penske this year is faster than Roush and that means it is possible that Joey and Brad would be even faster than Biffle with Joey and Brad not being at the tire test. 670. cjs3872 posted: 04.10.2014 - 6:01 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I did not know about Biffle's speed, Eric. And if Biffle went that fast, Trevor Bayne's peak speed in the #21 car was likely close to that, as well, as Bayne and the Wood Brothers were also at that test. But as I said, that's about as fast as the top straight-line speeds were at Talladega in 1987 when Bill Elliott did that 212.809 MPH lap and they were racing at about 210 MPH in the race itself. And with the tire issues we've seen over the last three races (Fontana, Martinsville, and Texas), if something happens at that speed, it could be absolutely horrendous, because they're going 15 MPH faster in a straight line than they were going at any of the 1.5 mile tracks this season.
