He, Yeley, Petty, Sorenson, Vickers and Rudd all stayed out while everyone else pitted with about 5 laps to go. Also career highs for JJ Yeley and Reed Sorenson. Kyle Petty scored his first top-5 since 1997! Toyota score their first top-5 in NEXTEL Cup racing (Brian Vickers in 5th). And Ricky Rudd scores his first top 10 since October 2005, at Lowe's. 2. biffle16 posted: 05.28.2007 - 2:07 pm Rate this comment: (0) (6) Biff made it 45 laps. That race had a huge, empty hole. :( Also, Ryan Newman's 200th start. He also started from the pole. 3. biffle16 posted: 05.28.2007 - 2:12 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Also, the last time Kyle Petty finished better than third was in June 1995, when he finished first. As of today, that race has been his last win. 4. Anonymous posted: 05.28.2007 - 3:08 pm Rate this comment: (3) (0) I don't know if Mears lucked into the win. He ran up front all day and had the best fuel mileage at the end. 5. No offense Mears your cool and all.) 2. J.J Yeleys best finish (2nd) 3.Kyle Pettys first top 10 in 10 years!(3rd) I was pulling for you at the end man :) 4.Brian Vickers best finish this year (5th) 5.Ricky Rudds best run this year (7th) 6. Jrs first point race w/o Eury acually ends up great. iwas not expecting that (8th) 7.By far Toyotas best race even if it doesnt show by the finishes in the race 8.In my mind one of the most amazing finishes ever. 6. Zac posted: 05.28.2007 - 6:58 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I wouldn't necessarily say Petty lucked into his finish. He was running in the top twelve a good bit, and was good enough to be the lucky dog. I know I was rooting for him in those last ten laps. Vickers was, at some points, three miles per hour faster than the second place guy when he was leading. I'd say that new engine and crew chief experience in Doug Richert payed off quite well. That was Toyota's first top five in Cup. I was amazed that there were no cautions in those last 65 laps. We need more of this type of finish. Jeff Gordon gets his fifth straight DNF at Lowes in a hard crash on the frontstetch where he nearly turned the car over after Allmendinger t-boned him. Oh yeah, Jimmie Johnson caused about a 13 car wreck on lap 59 when his tire, which was cut by Mr. Allmendinger, left the tread of his car while he was running up front. Chaos ensued behind him. It looked like a restrictor plate wreck. 10. The Top 5 are guys who dont finish there all the time. Great To see Yeley (from my hometown) come up with a top 5....Petty so come home thrid which is almost a win for him. and Toyota gets there first top 5. It is great to see someone diffrent in the top 5 beside Gordon, Johnson, Kenseth. And I hate Gordon but that was a hard lick...hope he isnt to jarred from that 11. I thought for sure that Petty and Rudd were gonna wind up 1-2, but it was awesome to see Mears win it. After more than four winless years and the heartbreak of Homestead 2005, it was awesome to see him finally get one! 13. Mike posted: 05.29.2007 - 5:22 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) I think one reason that Casey Mears ran so well most of the night was that his crew chief, Darian Grubb, worked under Chad Knaus for the last few years. I wouldn't be surprised if the #25 car had a set up close to the #48. 14. McMurrayFan26 posted: 05.29.2007 - 2:14 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Vickers had the car to beat for most of the race. This is NASCAR's equivalence of an endurance race. In an endurance race both driver and car must endure some of the harshest racing conditions in order to make it to the finish. Just finishing this race on the lead lap is enough for a pat on the back; A top 5 in the CocaCola 600 is equivalent to a win. Those who finished in the top 5 didn't luck into their finishes, they earned them by enduring 400 laps in what is perhaps NASCAR's hardest event. A big congratulations goes out to all those who finished and especially to those who finished in the top 5. 16. Among the Top 7 finishers, Tony Stewart is the only one who is not a surprise. Cool to see only 23 cars within 10 laps of the leader at the end, like the old days. Congratulations also to Fernando Alonso and Dario Franchitti, who won the other major races during the weekend at Monaco and Indianapolis respectively. 19. In response to people who think Casey lucked into the win, if I remember right, with 25 laps to go (before the pitting started) he was 4th. Yeley was 8th or 9th. And Vickers...wow, Toyota should've had their first win. What a race by Brian. I was cheering my butt off because I thought Toyota was over their head when they came to the NCS, but they aren't and they showed it. 22. Ragan had to start from the rear after an engine change and was completely out to lunch for the first green flag stint, riding around shotgun on the field for a bit before becoming one of the six cars to go a lap down by the first caution. He got the free pass on the next yellow, for the first big wreck, and gained a ton of track position after the next big wreck occurred just after the restart. Ragan went from outside the top 40 to inside the top 15 in less than 5 green-flag laps and managed to stay there for most of the rest of his race, riding around in the top ten until teammate Carl Edwards spun with a flat tire directly in front of him. Ragan t-boned Edwards at low speed and was subsequently hit by Bill Elliott, who found himself in the same scenario that Ragan had been in just seconds earlier. A very dejected Ragan was done for the day, as was Elliott, while Edwards clicked off laps and brought his damaged car home in 15th. 55.
