It was his 3rd different special paint job in 4 races as part of a Happy Meal Promotion where his paint job was the paint job of the toy cars Mickey Ds gave out during the week. (During the week of Loudon, they gave away Kyle Petty #44 cars) 6. He would win both races the next year, and both were rain-shortened. 9. 18fan posted: 01.31.2010 - 5:47 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) This race marked the third time that Jeff Gordon won ten races in a season(they were all in a row). Since, only Jimmie Johnson in 2007 has won 10 in a season, only Carl Edwards in 2008 has won nine, and only Kyle Busch in 2008, Johnson in 2004, and Ryan Newman in 2003 has a driver won eight races. That shows how much of an accomplishment it was for Jeff, as only Rusty Wallace in 1993 won ten races besides Jeff in the 90s. 10. However, that dreadful cut tire in turn 3 of the Daytona 500 that year kept him from that plateu. Or give him another four races that year and he's got it. 11. 18fan posted: 05.05.2010 - 11:23 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The beginning of the end of Mark Martin's championship chances. 12. The Kodiak Ice look was also on Grissom's car for Dover but he failed to qualify. This was a No Bull 5 race. The five drivers eligible for the Million bucks were... #24 Jeff Gordon- who won the money! #6 Mark Martin- blew an engine and finished 40th #31 Mike Skinner- finished 26th #3 Dale Earnhardt- finished 4th #18 Bobby Labonte- finished 15th This was the second year in a row Gordon collected a million dollar bonus at Darlington follwoing his Winston Million victory the year before in the final year it was offered. Can you imagine being 5 laps down and still grabbing a top 15 nowadays? How about finishing in the top 10 despite being 3 laps behind the leader? Mayfield had no company at the end of the race, being the only car 1 lap down. Still received a top 5 for his effort. I really thought Burton was going to take this one. It ain't over 'til it's over. Instead Gordon snagged victory along with a cool million. 20. Also 2 straight million dollar wins in the race. Better than Petty, Earnhardt, Pearson, Elliott, etc... After the last pit stop he saved his tires and then charged up for the last run to the finish, passing Burton and taking the victory. The Roush bunch looked like a bunch of crybabies after Jack Roush started "Tiregate" the last week at Loudon, Mark Martin hoping Burton would win after dropping a cylinder and parking it behind the garage, and Frank Stoddard pouting after Burton lost the lead to Gordon on the final run during his interview. I couldn't then and still can't stand Roush or the majority of the Ford drivers, so this was a sweet, sweet victory. Dale Earnhardt also finished worse than Jeff, so that was also a bonus. 21. The following 7 drivers: Gordon (Hendrick) Burton (Rousch) Martin (Rousch) Jarrett (Yates) Wallace (Penske) Mayfield (Penske/Kranefuss) and LaBonte (Gibbs the lone exception) compile 123 of a possible 165 Top 5s for the season. Further, in a move that would have been unheard of in most seasons to date, Rousch fires Ted Musgrave mid-season while driving a TOP 20 CAR. SABCO and Childress are working on their multi-car stables in 1998 and soon to join in 99 are Gibbs (B. Labonte, T. Stewart) Petree (Schrader, K. Wallace) and Carter (Spencer, D. Waltrip). 28. Skinner was one of the No Bull 5 that had a chance for the million if they won. Skinner was already like 4 laps down, and Morgan took over during the 2nd caution. 29. Jimmie4life posted: 04.25.2020 - 2:41 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Jeff Gordon was absolutely insane from 1995 to 1999. He won 47 races, and topped it all off with the most dominant performance in a single NASCAR season in history, with 28 top 10's and 26 top 5's in a 33 race season. If Jeff kept up his consistency throughout the rest of his career(as a full time driver), and we included his 1992-1994 stats, he'd end up with a career total of 199 wins, 525 top 10's, and 451 top 5's. He's already one of the greatest of all time, but this right here would probably have cemented him as the all time legendary driver. 30. Just watch replay of race and he says something like ?We'd like to get a caution but we won't get one with him (Gordon) leading.? Burton pitted a few laps before Gordon and the last run and did not conserve his tires enough. As for cautions they worked both ways in ?98 he had a huge lead at the 1st Michigan race when Spencer roll bar padding caution happened. Michigan was track that a caution free race wasn't out of the question. Martin won the race. Jeff dominated the first Dover race but did not get a caution to make it on fuel. He was helped by cautions at the Coke 600 and the 2nd Michigan race. He was helped and hurt by cautions or lack of cautions. Much of the bad blood was from Gordon's Michigan win. I'm sure wanted Mark to win after the tragedy but was Jeff supposed to not try to win. Gordon was a half lap behind when the caution came out for Ward's blown engine but he was running laps as fast as the leader. Jeff Burton was interviewed after on RPM 2 Night and said ?It was ridiculous that Gordon won the race.? Loudon was two weeks later Jeff out drove Mark on 2 tires with 60 laps to go and tire gate was born. Jeff and Ray made comments about the controversy post race at the Southern race. When asked about the late race adjustment. Ray said, ?It was just air Jack.? Similar to comments after their post race argument in the garage area a week ago. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
