So everyone was talking about how easy Dale was gonna take it to make sure he clinched the title. Of course, about 10 laps in, he makes a 3 wide pass. At this point, Ned Jarrett made one of my all time favorite calls from the broadcast booth: "The man (Dale) just can't help it, he has to race!" DW ran out of gas going down the backstretch while running second on the last lap but still matched his best finish of the year in third. Following the lead of several other top drivers during the mid-1990s Rudd started his own team for 1994 and took sponsor Tide with him to his new #10 Ford entry, opening up the #5 Chevrolet for Terry Labonte to come over with his Kellogg's Corn Flakes sponsorship and revitalize his career. Rudd would be one of the more successful owner-driver racers too. This was also Rudd's last official Cup start in any car other than a Ford. Most of Rudd's Cup success came in a Ford but six of his 23 victories came in the Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. I don't like seeing how things would've been had there been a "chase" or playoff or whatever they have in any given year but maybe some do so I ignore it. But one thing Ryan is totally correct on is that they are pointless because people would've been racing differently to win the title under that system. Just watched the 93 season though and Dale Earnhardt, as tough as it was for someone like him to do, stroked it for the last quarter, maybe third of this season. He was leading in races won when he had his huge points lead and would've likely won several more races had he not been stroking but the 6th championship was more important than a few more races won. Every other driver in that position did the same thing. 58. It was a start and park but it was a little more complicated than that. Childress brought 3 cars and had them set up all identically the way Earnhardt wanted them and to fit Earnhardts size. Earnhardt crashed his primary and went to his backup car. If anything at all would've happened to that backup car before they fired engines to start the race the plan was for them to do a DC and for Dale to drive the #31 that Bonnett struggled to even qualify because it was set up for Dale. Also they brought every backup part you could think of in a trailer to the track and for humor even brought a kitchen sink and strapped it to the inside of the trailer. They were ready for just about anything to happen. It's a good thing for Darrell Waltrip that they did have that car Neil Bonnett drove. Childress didn't plan on Neil only driving 3 laps. When the green flag dropped to start the race, because of the fog, the only people that were in DW's pit were his crew chief Barry Dodson and his wife Stevie who scored. The rest weren't there, so because DW was running for points, Childress called Bonnett in and sent his pit crew (Dale Earnhardt's Busch Crew) immediately over to Darrell Waltrips pit. The camera's showed this happening, and Waltrip ended up finishing 3rd that day. So was it a start and park, most definitely, but I had no clue there was that much more to the story. 59. The change ended a eight-season run for the 15 with the red Motorcraft colors, from 1985-93 (interrupted in 1988 when the car had primary branding from Crisco). Morgan-McClure Motorsports final start with a driver other than Sterling Marlin until the beginning of 1998, when Bobby Hamilton took over from 1998-2000. MMM used various drivers to finish out the season after Ernie Irvan left for the Robert Yates Racing #28 Texaco-Havoline car. It could be argued that Marlin's and MMM's best years were both together during this stretch. On that note, final race for Sterling Marlin in the Stavola Brothers' #8 Raybestos Ford. Sterling only drove one season for the team before leaving for MMM and Jeff Burton took over this ride for the 1994 season. Final race for Geoff Bodine in the #7 without Exide sponsorship, and with Family Channel sponsorship. The team picked up full-time sponsorship from Exide for what would be the 1994 and 1995 seasons, and Family Channel went to Roush's #16 second car to sponsor Ted Musgrave full-time. On that same note, final race for Wally Dallenbach and Keystone on the Roush Racing #16 car. Wally and Keystone got this team off the ground and Wally arguably had statistically two of his best seasons driving this car, albeit mostly ho-hum in the grand scheme of things. Final race for the #68 Country Time car and final race for Greg Sacks with that team. Sacks would move over into a full-time effort for the #77 car (#55 in 1991-1993) for the 1994 season with 1993 incumbent sponsor US Air, in what would turn out to be his only full season. The #68 Country Time car became the #19 Hooters car for Loy Allen, Jr. I had/have mixed feelings about this one, as both paint schemes are both quite underrated in my opinion. Wish both could have continued longer than they did. Final race for Jimmy Hensley as a "fill-in" driver for many organizations, well, at least temporarily. He signed a full-time deal with Ray DeWitt and Petron Plus for the 1994 season. Unfortunately things unraveled and Petron Plus didn't stay the balance of the 1994 season, and so neither did Hensley. Another underrated paint scheme. Hensley had filled in even in 1992, as Chad Little began the season driving the #66 TropArtic/Phillips 66 Ford for Cale Yarborough. Final race for Dick Trickle in the 41 car, and the final race the 41 car had Manheim Auctions sponsorship. Trickle would move over to the #32 car that had previously been driven by Jimmy Horton for the 1994 season. Manheim Auctions went to sponsor Leo Jackson's #54 part=time effort for Robert Pressley for the 1994 season to prep Pressley to take over for the retiring Harry Gant. (#54 Manheim car - another hidden gem of paint schemes). Final race for the base white and green Kodiak scheme on the Hendrick #25. This scheme ran from 1991-1993. For 1994, the team added a two-tone green base and changed the number font slightly. Concerning in-race activity: Mike Wallace was relieved by brother Kenny late in the race. Kenny had just crashed out and Mike mentioned during the TV interview that he had gotten super overheated in the car. Mike had a good run going, sniffing the Top 10 in Busch owner Barry Owen's pert time Cup car, and said he hated to get out of it. Mike also mentioned this was an old Penske car driven by brother Rusty during the 1992 season. Dale Earnhardt made it three wide early in the race, big deal. The bigger moment for him happened on one of the middle or fairly late restarts. Dale sailed it into 3 on the bottom, then the back end fish-tailed and he corrected up into Greg Sacks. Both drivers amazingly kept their cars off the wall. Dale ended up with some heavy door damage on the right side as a result and he said the aero was beyond messed up after that. Still brought it home 10th which was more than enough for the title. Ernie Irvan actually made pretty significant contact during his slide down the frontstretch into the inside wall. IIRC the right side and right rear was what impacted the wall, but not overly significantly. The Yates crew salvaged the car and Ernie still ended up with a decent 12th place run. Rick Mast was running 3rd around lap 100 when his engine blew. The weather was quite mild for mid-November but also mostly cloudy. Fitting for the mood of the 1993 season, one that saw great competition and memorable races, but that was second best to the sadness of losing both Alan and Davey. It even sprinkled a bit at one point in the race, adding to the symbolic nature of the mood of undoubtedly many of the fans and folks at the track. Bob Jenkins even uttered during Rusty and Dale's Polish Victory Lap honoring both Alan and Davey "The crowd is cheering and waving in happiness, but you know that in many eyes, there are tears". 66. For the 1996 and 97 seasons he drove the #7 QVC after Exide left for Roush. 67.
