He was in the hospital in serious condition for a few days. Johnny Hayes credits A.J.'s switch to a new Simpson helmet the day of the crash for saving A.J.'s life. The new style helmet ended up with a 5 inch crack in it but prevented A.J. from any further injuries. 3. Had he been able to just finish this race the 1989 champion may not have been Rusty Wallace. 4. Wow, so Dale Jarrett had the first movie-themed special paint job in this race? Here I thought it was the Thunderbat in 1995. 9. Pearson, then 54, ran the first practice session for this race on Tuesday but woke up with a back and neck so sore the next day he knew he couldn't run 500 miles and do the team justice so he announced his permanent retirement and stepped out of the car. Pearson was replaced by Busch champ Tommy Ellis, Bonnett's regular substitute at the time, for the race. 20. They kept saying multiple times before during and after Earnhardt went out that coming into the race he had a 125 point lead over Wallace. If that was the case he'd have still been leading in the points after this race. They also kept talking about the wild turnaround in points in the Busch race the day before as an example saying Rob Moroso came from 3rd to 1st in points, but were saying he came from 90 points back. Also during the races at no time did you know a full field rundown on any network and usually only the top 5 before and after commercial breaks and the top 10 after the race ended. A lot of the time that was wrong. Don't get me wrong, racing was more entertaining back in these days but no wonder it was possible for guys to win actual Winston Cup races who not only didn't win them but should've been a lap down or tail end of the lead lap. 27. Corey posted: 12.25.2018 - 11:27 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @26 Keep in mind that electronic timing and scoring was still another 3 years out. Any sort of full field rundown would have been impossible. I wouldn't expect much in any level of accuracy regarding the rundown or standings, at least from the network coverages. 29. GoPM21 posted: 12.25.2018 - 11:36 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @28 You're wrong. ESPN did field summaries before electronic scoring was implemented. 30. Harry Gant always seems to come on strong at the end of these races back in '89 but never was able to get there in the end to take the win as he came up second after making late race passes for position in both of the last two races (Martinsville and Charlotte). ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
