The biggest wreck,on lap 143, saw Lake Speed flip three times down the backstretch and get t-boned by Dave Marcis. Speed was uninjured. 2. At Bristol in August he finished 25th after an accident, ending the streak. Phil Barkdoll scored his best career finish (15th) which he would tie two races later at Talladega. Jimmy Means scored his best finish of the year (12th), as did Grant Adcox (13th; unfortunately it was also the last time he finished a race), and Morgan Shepherd, who finished 2nd (he would also finish 2nd in August at Michigan). 3. He always charged back to the front. Secondly, this was the first of 2 instances where ole' Morgan Shepherd would finish 2nd to Davey @ Daytona. The other, of course, being the 92' 500. 6. The race would be shown flag-to-flag on satellite feed. Later however, the race was edited to fit an allotted amount of time at another date. Things like the Darrel Waltrip caution-free spin were cut out, along with some other things. Now in my personal opinion: THIS RACE WAS AWESOME! 16. Bobby Coyle (ran the 1988 Twin 125's in a #24 Chevy & also DNQ'ed for the 1988 season finale at Atlanta for the Dingman Brothers) and David Rogers (Orlando area short-track racer who had been testing with the Florida-based Dingmans in 1989) were rumored to get the ride but ultimately Jim Sauter would park it after 5 laps with engine problems. http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/1989-06-15/sports/8906150236_1_mittiga-dingman-winston-cup-race 17. 00andJoe posted: 07.05.2011 - 4:29 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) #55 sponsor: Crown Petroleum/Skoal 18. Actually, the record for most cautions in a Daytona race is now 17 in the 2011 Daytona 500. But as for most cautions in the 400 miler event, well, yes, you would be right 19. It involved a couple of cautions for rain in parts of the track. Benny Parsons joined Bob Jenkins and Ned Jarrett for the 1st time, Benny was tickled to death watching for the 1st time from the perspective of the booth high above the track. At one point yelled "THIS IS THE GOSH DARNEDEST THING!!!" Those 3 calling the races for ESPN combined to help NASCAR rise in popularity through the end of the century. 30. They didn't call him Iron Head for nothing people. He was pure recklessness out there. It's a wonder how he didn't seriously injure more drivers in his career. 31. Those two would also back Barrett's 1990 endevours in the Slim Fast #72 with owner Phil Barkdoll's and the #18 co-owned by Rick Hendrick. Newman would later back Stan's son Stanton Barrett in his #84 Cup attempt at Daytona. https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/407112355/ 33. Benny had been there all year with ESPN, but this was the first season with those 3 as the broadcast team for ESPN coverage of both Winston Cup and Busch Series. This was the 9th of 20 Cup races they had that season, plus several Busch races they covered. 34. Eventual 89 Busch Series champion Rob Moroso won. I think Jimmy Spencer was the only one to run both races. 35. Jimnsimforever posted: 12.20.2018 - 8:13 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) As mentioned in post #2, Phil Barkdoll had his best career cup finish in this race, finishing 15th as the first car 1 lap down. During the broadcast around lap 120 or so, they said that "a couple of laps ago" Phil Barkdoll got out of the car and was replaced by Jim Sauter, but didn't say why. They had to have changed drivers during caution 9 because they didn't lose the 1 lap then. During the restart after the 12th and final caution, Sauter was black flagged for jumping the restart and had to make a stop and go penalty. It got him out of the draft and by himself and I saw the group of 4 lead cars lap the #73 on the backstrech on the final lap. 36.
