DW was quite pissed, so, I guess this win kinda brought some kind of relief. As for Rusty? He finished 31st after pooping an engine. 2. This likely was the very first time a NASCAR race car was given a special paint job by its sponsor to tie in with a movie promotion. 15. No explanation was offered during the race broadcast that I recall, but it wasn't the first time Petty and Felix Sabates bought their way into a race. In the Daytona 500, they bought Eddie Bierschwale's Oldsmobile and Kyle started the race before turning it back over to Bierschwale. This was the first season for Sabates as a car owner, and they were only running a partial schedule. 21. MSportRev posted: 10.30.2018 - 6:42 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @20 This was a collaboration between Sabates' SabCo and Hendrick Motorsports because Kyle's car was going to be a part of the Days of Thunder filming. 22. Because Kyle wasn't planning on running a full schedule and Eddie was, Eddie started the race and quickly turned the car over to Kyle at the first caution so Eddie would get the points. It was Eddie's car but Kyle had to please his new sponsor and had it painted on Eddie's car. Ironically Kyle Petty drove the #23 car to a top 10 finish and it was Eddie Bierschwale's only career top 10 finish in 117 career Winston Cup starts. 23. Jimnsimforever posted: 12.19.2018 - 7:17 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I think everything in this 1989 Coca-Cola 600 race thread about why Kyle Petty was driving for Rick Hendrick in this race is incorrect. Kyle Petty was part of a new race team that wasn't running a full schedule and the owner was Felix Sabates. Kyle drove the #42 Peak Antifreeze Pontiac this season. That stuff is right. The week before this race, in The Winston, Kyle Petty crashed out early in the race. Horrible crash, he was taken away on a stretcher and neck brace, lucky it was only bumps and bruises. Problem was, they had already wrecked a car and that was the only car they had left, so the new team didn't have a car for the 600. Rick Hendrick provided a car for Kyle to drive for him, with Kyle already having the Peak Antifreeze sponsor. Only difference is it was a Chevy instead of a Pontiac and he drove that one race for Rick Hendrick instead of Felix Sabates. Also, Rick Hendrick did provide the cars for the Days of Thunder movie. The filming for that move at actual Nascar races hadn't taken place yet. The first race there were cars entered for that movie and filmed during the race was at Phoenix in late 1989. And the rest were filmed during speedweeks at Daytona in 1990 and the Darlington spring race in 1990. 24. This turned out to be Bonnett's late Cup race at Charlotte, an injury had him on the sidelines in the fall and his career was all but ended by an injury in the spring of 1990 before the tour returned to the track. 25. This finish would be Sterling's best result of '89. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
