This was also the first of 3 Cup races which had a record 20 cautions. That is, a record until May 2005 at Charlotte. 2. He could have won his race that day, but a crash with Hut Stricklin and Brett Bodine ended his chances. :( 5. If I remember right the car climbed the wall pretty high. 9. Bill Meade posted: 05.28.2008 - 5:27 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) You remember correctly Neal. He nailed the wall (got a couple of wheels on it) and then slide down the track and got nailed by Brett Bodine. 10. I saw Rusty Wallace's car from this race sitting in the Bruton Smith Building on Saturday when I went to pick up my tickets from the Will Call office. It looked nice and pristine. 14. Sacks led 119 laps and Wallace led 51. 17. Mr. Sauter ran in the top 10 all day, mostly top 5 surprising even the announcers getting as high as 2nd place at one point. However, a flat tire less than 10 laps to go ruined the best run Jim Sauter ever had in a Winston Cup race. Did not know this til I just watched this race on YouTube 21. Good run for young Rick Mast, leading a couple laps on the way to a solid top-15. 22. Talked to a buddy of mine who spotted for Eddie Bierschwale in the race, and said it was freezing up on the spotters' stand. Eddie come on the radio and said "It must really be cold up there, I can hear your teeth chattering when you come on the radio!" 23. There was a planned comp caution on lap 45 but the spin by Schrader ultimately substituted for said caution. WOW what saves by Bill Elliott and Greg Sacks while side by side for the lead at around quarter distance. Also good job to the two leaders Irvan and Sacks to miss the 16 Unfortunate break there for Ernie. Had a career run going but blew a tire from the lead and went airborne into Stricklin (who also went airborne) Quite high attrition in this one. Great comeback by Tim Sauter from being a lap down on multiple occasions, same for Rusty and Mikey. Don't know how Eddie Bierschwale ended up finishing as well as he did given the amount of crashes he was in. This race set the caution record for NASCAR, this record would hold up for 17 years before being beaten by the 2005 Coca Cola 600. Phil Parsons had a lot of trouble in this race, and in fact there were 2 cautions that he was in in conjunction with the 94. 94 had one of the fastest cars in the field yet he couldn't keep from making mistakes in the pits, the loose tires cost him multiple laps with under 100 to go and cost him the win. Greg Sacks was also having a career race in this one until the pace car didn't pick him up in time for the back straight pit stalls to gain an advantage, put him back to 8th place and unfortunately he would spin out 10-20 laps later. Not just a good Bristol race, a GREAT Bristol race. Would even argue it's better than the 1990 Bristol race. Rusty holding off the much faster DW in a race that saw the lead change record for Bristol at the time be beaten, lots of passing and a photo finish for 3rd, 4th and 5th between Trickle, Allison, and Bodine Judgment call on a Moderator Correction: Perhaps add #16 Larry Pearson to the caution for #33 spin back straight? I personally wouldn't include it because it didn't cause any visible damage to the 16 24.
