And with good reason- After a race that featured 68 lead changes among 16 drivers, some 10 drivers were in the running for the win. Dale Earnhardt beat out Buddy Baker by about 1.6 seconds to win his first race since joining the Childress team for the second time. Behind Earnhardt, 6 of the 10 cars in the pack were decided by photo finishes. 2. Look at the top-7 finishers: Earnhardt, Baker, Labonte, Allison, Yarborough, Waltrip, Gant. Also finishing on the lead lap were Elliott, Wallace, Marcis, and Rudd. Somehow the stars lined up to have all those current-and-future Hall of Famers fighting it out for the win. 3. canadian nascar fan posted: 09.15.2005 - 6:47 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) calgarian trevor boys had a scary wrec in this deal too 4. The only thing bad that happened? He had to tie his shoe. That was it. He got out of the car instantly. 5. However, Ken did put on an impressive show until he was replaced by Sacks. 8. On the last lap, once Labonte was caught, I think he knew his only option was to let Earnhardt by without a major fight, hope for an opening to tuck in and try to pass Dale in the tri-oval. Labonte tried hard but wasn't able to clear Baker to get in DE's draft. 23. Ryan posted: 07.29.2018 - 9:27 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) 34 years ago today Dale Earnhardt won the Talladega 500 with a last lap pass on Terry Labonte. It was the second year in a row that he won the race and he won both races with last lap passes which was normal being able to sling shot. At the time he the only driver to win back to back Talladega 500s (he also completed the feat in 1990-1991 and he won back to back Winston 500's in 1999-2000). The prior year he won in a Ford driving for Bud Moore. This was his first win with Richard Childress driving a Chevrolet. He led thirteen times for 40 laps. There were 68 lead changes among 16 drivers and this race is considered one of the greatest races ever. Six of the ten positions behind Earnhardt were decided by photo finishes at the line. There was a combined 25 NASCAR championships in this race and legendary driver A.J. Foyt also was in the race. 25. Ryan posted: 07.29.2018 - 9:29 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Also, Earnhardt started the race in third, led the first lap and the last. 26. Wil posted: 01.08.2019 - 6:07 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Rewatched the finish. Earnhardt intentionally dragged the brake entering turn 1 on the final lap, got a massive run and slingshotted past T Labonte on the backstretch with ease. Earnhardt was a savant at drafting and did things in the 80's that wouldn't become common knowledge until a decade later. Rewatching some of these old races (when I wasn't even born yet) makes it clear to me that Dale was the greatest ever. The talent oozed off the TV screen in ways that I've never seen with another driver (Kyle Busch and Kyle Larson are only other two I've seen where the driving skill looks so brilliant, even on television...remember though that I'm a milennial and there's a generation gap) 27. Pearson was basically just racing for fun at that point in his career, and back when they ran the Dega race at the end of July, start of August the heat was just brutal. Something today's drivers largely don't have to deal with, since so many summer races are either up north or run at night. 31. Baker must've just been in front by an eyelash at the line. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
