Wish I would have been around to see this. 3. rob posted: 02.28.2010 - 12:46 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) i saw the 78, 79. and 80 world 600's and they were all incredible races. the 115 inch wheelbase cars put on a great show at that track. NASCAR started going downhill when they went to the 110 inch wheelbase in 1981. 4. myself posted: 05.14.2010 - 12:12 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) you know what, rob, you make an excellent point. Those scaled down cars that were ushered in in '81 make the racing be not as good. 5. Kip posted: 04.23.2011 - 1:01 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) I was at this race - it was a great one! I watched from the infield on top of a motorhome. On the last lap Earnhardt got under Richard going down the backstretch. Richard ran him hard into turn 3 - Earnhardt slid up between 3 and 4 and Richard slid back under him to make the pass for 2nd coming off turn 4. Earnhardt even said that Richard taught him something (paraphrased) in the post race interview. 6. Eric posted: 06.20.2011 - 11:43 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) What a great race. The race was actually delayed a few minutes do to a skydiver landing on the racetrack in one of the turns. They finally got him out of the way so they could start 7. Their streak would continue through the 1979 season with Neil Bonnett and would finally end during the 1980 World 600 when Cale Yarborough sat on the pole with Junior Johnson. The 13 straight poles for the Wood Brothers has to be some kind of record. 12. simonracer posted: 05.02.2015 - 6:43 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Kyle Petty, according to the 1979 Talladega 500 broadcast, was entered in this one but he crashed and didn't make the field. 13. saltsburgtrojanfan posted: 04.18.2018 - 12:16 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Caution 1: #05 accident turn 1 Caution 2: #39 spun turn 4 Caution 3: #9 engine Caution 4: #6,12 accident turn 4 Caution 5: #4 accident turn 2 Caution 6: #49 spun turn 2 Caution 7: #15 engine Caution 8: #71 stalled turn 4 Caution 9: #50 spun turn 1 14. 34McDowellFan posted: 04.22.2018 - 11:06 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Kyle Petty's DNQ/WD (Not sure which it was) Car number: 42 Sponsor: STP Onwer: Petty Enterprises Car: Chevrolet 15. Ivan Balakhonov posted: 10.16.2018 - 7:44 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @15 To be correct, the decision to withdraw the entry was made on May 16. During private tests Kyle crashed twice and not only the fact that two Dodges were badly damaged but understanding that Kyle was not ready made Richard to withdraw. 17. rateus posted: 02.13.2021 - 2:01 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) John Kennedy qualified a Chevrolet 30th but withdrew, Cecil Gordon was added to the field to replace him. Ron Hutcherson actually qualified 11th but clearly ran into problems as he was moved to the back of the field, only to drop out before completing a lap on race day. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
