Yarborough passed Waltrip with 19 laps to go to capture his 9th win of
1978. It virtually locked up his championship run!

That had to have Waltrip really pissed, given he'd lead the first 381 laps.

381 laps led in this race by Darrell Waltrip... Is that a Cup series
record for most laps led by a non-race winner?

@Luke: No. Kyle Busch led 415 laps and didn't win at Bristol in 2008,
and Denny Hamlin led 381 at Richmond that year. Also, Rusty Wallace led
409 laps at Bristol in 1993 and finished second. Richard Petty led 442
laps in a race at Bristol in 1964 and finished second (I think that
one's the record). Bobby Allison led 432 laps and finished second at
Martinsville in 1972.

I just noticed something else interesting about this race. Every single
driver who started in the top 10 also finished in the top 10. Does
anyone know how often that's happened in NASCAR history? I would imagine
it's pretty rare.

In terms of percentage, though, this race might be the record. Waltrip
led 95.25% of the laps without winning. None of the other races
mentioned exceed that.

(Even though Hamlin also led 381 laps in the Richmond race that was
mentioned, the race distance was extended to 407 laps, so the percentage
is slightly less.)

Bill Hollar qualified for Cecil Gordon, Gordon's own entry was added as
the provisional with Junior Miller as drier.
