After the finish he bumped Waltrip's car on the pit lane, then rushed to the victory lane but was restrained by crewmen (unclear, his or Darrell's). Some quotes after the race (as per Souther Motor Racing newspaper): Darrell, in his post-race interview over the PA (greeted by thunderous boos from the stands): "It was a tough, close race. When I passed Neil, I was down on the inside and he was outside. We sorta got together. I'm sure he'd have done me the same way." Darrell, during press-conference (police escort was required to get him there): "I suppose Neil's got a right to be upset. I guess, I would be, too. But I try to win the race any way I can. I don't like to be booed, but I'm not going to let it bother me and I won't change the way I drive." Bonnett: "I'm sorry I got mad, but I'm not apologizing to that so-and-so. We can settle it ourselves, somewhere else." Bud Moore: "If NASCAR can't do something officially about the way Waltrip is driving, then somebody else is going to do something about it unofficially." Well, after this incident Waltrip and Bonnett were put on 30-day probation, Neil was fined for crashing his car into Waltrip's on the pit lane. 7. The unliked bad boy driver (in this case Waltrip, who would eventually become the most popular driver over a decade later, and in '08 it was Kyle Busch, and '17 Denny Hamlin) spins out the popular fan-favorite driver (This time it's Bonnet, '08 it's Junior, and '17 it's Chase Elliott) who's dominated the race about to get a victory to end a winless streak. Oh, and all races were run in Virginia. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
