Dick Hutcherson actually had a chunk of tire hit his windshield, causing him to retire from the race. 16. Both Wood Brothers cars #21 and #41 of Panch and Turner were affected too. Turner was quite vocal about Hurtubise for it, saying he was spinning the LR and tearing it up. Can't imagine having a glass windshield (no Plexiglass in those days) crack up in front of me at those speeds.. 18. Bunkie Knudsen the head of Chevrolet came to Smokey in the winter of 1965 asking if he would prepare their new bodied Chevelle for racing at Daytona. ?Every detail of the car was perfect,? recalls Mario Andretti, who wrecked it early in the race. ?But it was just diabolical to drive. I've never been so happy to crash in my life.? Yunick sold what was left of the Chevelle to a local racer. 25. They were highlighting just how fast the Daytona 500, still less than 10 years old, had fast become one of the biggest races in auto racing. 27. I am trying to find as much info on races Ralph drove that wasn't in the Cup series. 28. JSPorts posted: 10.03.2020 - 7:43 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) That is really weird that he drove a Chevy sponsored by a Ford dealership. Elmo did drive a Ford or Mercury for almost all of his career, though, so I guess there's that. 29. Cars back then still had treaded tires so it was possible. It's still pretty crazy to see though. 30.
