Just something I can capture off the net or something will be fine. Thanks. We spent the weekend in the infield and slept on the grass and partied like crazy until raceday. This was my first race but certainly not my last. 6. It would be the first, and thus far only, event at Darlington on the Grand National/Winston/Sprint Cup level that had NO cautions. Despite that though, the race was still quite atrophic, as are most Darlington events. Less then half of the field was running at the finish, the majority of the retirees falling out due to mechanical issues of some type, rather it be engine, brakes, transmissions, etc. This would also be the fastest speed of a Darlington 500 mile Race, 129.784mph, until Richard Petty broke the record in 1967. Alongside his 1962 Daytona 500 win (which had also ran caution free), this is often Robert's most famous victory in the Grand National/Winston/Sprint Cup series. It would also be his next to last, after he would die from complications from burns in a 1964 World 600 crash. 7. I was a freshman at Clemson and had been to many races at Darlington, but this race was very special to me. As I rode down to Darlington with Bob's daughter and husband (Clemson students also), I was surprised by Bob when he threw me the keys of the 1963 Mercury pace car and said I could have it for the Friday and Saturday. He cautioned me to be sure to have it back before the Sunday race. The family had special seating on the backstretch, and another on my Uncles always had refreshments for us in the stands. I always stayed with Aunt Cora when I was in Darlington. In the early days of NASCAR, she had converted the second floor of her home into a dormitory for the race drivers as there were scarce accommodations in town. I knew many of those drivers over the years and Fireball Roberts was my favorite and was excited when Fireball won that race. (I remember Richard Petty when he was a teenager) The family had a barbecue every year for special guests and attending celebrities. That year Clint Eastwood was Grand Marshall , and joined us dressed as "Rowdy Yates". I still have the picture of Clint and I together to remember that very special event in my young life. 10. Bob Colvin is actually your first cousin once removed. "I was a freshman at Clemson and had been to many races at Darlington, but this race was very special to me. As I rode down to Darlington with Bob's daughter and husband (Clemson students also),.." Bob's daughter is your second cousin. But that was a great story. Thanks for sharing it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
