Neil "Soapy" Castles makes his second career start and first start in his own equipment. He'd drive his own cars for most of his career. Runt Harris returns to NASCAR after a 7 year absence driving Junie's #90 Chevrolet (wow, seems weird typing that). This was the first time Junie ever fielded a Chevy and only the second appearence of his famous #90. Joe Caspolich from Gulfport, Mississippi makes his NASCAR debut. Former Cup series race winner Bill Blair makes his only start of the 1957 season and finishes 38th after a crash 7. With the age limit in NASCAR's top tier series being 21 years of age and Cale being 17 at the time, he would not be eligible for the race. No problem for Cale. He had a friend who worked for the government, and she made him up a fake birth certificate, and Cale sent it to NASCAR in order to obtain a license. NASCAR, oblivious to this, sent him the license, and Cale was set to race in the Southern 500. However, following qualifying, NASCAR became suspicious and eventually Cale was found out. Bob Weatherly took his place behind the wheel. When race day came, Cale snuck in early though a hole in the fence which he used to sneak into the speedway grounds to watch races during his childhood. e then apparently hid against the floorboards of his 44 Pontiac until just before the command to start engines. Cale then shooed Bob out of the car, and took the green a few pace laps later. When NASCAR officials found Bob, who was supposed to be in the car, standing int he garage, they immediately became suspicious (yet again) and demanded to know who was piloting the car. Yet again, Cale was found as the culprit. NASCAR booted Cale off the track and told him never to return, but as history has shown us this was very inaccurate. He would indeed return. Since Cale started the race, he received the points for the event, making this his first cup start, albeit being illegal. 8. Fonty was pretty badly injured himself, and announced his retirement from a hospital bed. One thing I cannot ever recall, was it Bobby Myers or Billy Myers who was the father of Chocolate Myers? 9. nascarman posted: 09.20.2008 - 5:13 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Bobby Myers was Chocolate's dad. 10. hyltonfan08 posted: 01.23.2009 - 3:48 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Sponsors: 3-Paul Goldsmith: Pee Dee Motors 46-Speedy Thompson: Oates Motor Co. 92-Fonty Flock: Keith Motors 11. They prounouced him dead at the scene although he wasn't actually dead. 12. Anonymous posted: 10.03.2009 - 6:37 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) Actually, Bobby drove a white car. Jackie posted: 12.26.2009 - 8:39 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) This was the 1st lap that Bobby Myers had led in GN. Some think he was watching Goldsmith in the mirror and didnt see the spun out car of Fonty Flock sitting in the groove entering turn 3.Also the car of Flocks was black and it blended in with the sealer that they used in the groove at Darlington. 16. Everyone else in between moved up a place. Eddie Skinner who had qualified 36th withdrew. Robert Whitmire who started 52nd withdrew. 19. Anonymous posted: 08.03.2013 - 7:24 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Bill Widenhouse, Larry Frank & Dave Terrell all failed to qualify. Bob Whitmire & Eddie Skinner actually qualified, but apparently two cars were not allowed to start due to technical infrigements, and I'm presuming that they are the two who weren't allowed to start. 24. Chris posted: 02.02.2014 - 11:53 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) TO ROB... I can only offer this observation as far as to why Myers would ONLY be credited with leading but only lap 14. Lets assume (as it shows) Cotton Owens led lap 28; THEN the wreck HAPPENED before lap 29 could be completed. SO Owen could of been leading at the end of lap 28, got passed by Myers during lap 29, then crashed going into turn #3 (while Myers was leading), but since Myers crashed; -- Lee Petty assumed the lead when he crashed, and Petty led at the end of lap #29. Entirely possible to be "leading" and have wrecked since "leading" only officially counts at the start/finish line. 25. The reason Herb was so nervous was not discussed, but he finally gave up his ride to Fonty Flock stating that he was just too nervous to drive the race.? 34.
