Anyone know the story behind Lee Petty driving for Gary Drake in this race?

Maybe his own car broke down.

There was an even weirder occurance in qualifying, when Spartanburg
track promoter Joe Littlejohn decided to ride in the passenger's seat
alongside Herb Thomas in qualifying.

Lee Petty's 4th place was his best Cup result driving for another team.
In all but 4 races he drove his own cars and he drove for Gary on this
race. This was also the best Cup finish for Gary's team.
