No matter what, the winner of this race would be a first time winner.
None of the drivers in this field had ever won a Cup race before.

Last start for Kaiser. All totaled, they made 28 starts from 49-54, with
a best finish of 2nd at Heidleberg in '49 with Dick Linder.

There seems to be some confusion regarding starting postions - two cars
are listed as starting from position #4 on the grid, while there is no
listing for the #8 starting position.

Soares' lone win came in his fifth career Cup start. The Oakland driver
was West series regular in 1954 and mostly just raced on the West Coast
although he would do a few races out east later in the year.

This race counted for both NASCAR Grand National and West Series points
but since it was run the exact same day as an East Coast Grand National
at Charlotte Speedway all the larger series' regular talent focused on
that race instead; hence the field with no prior Cup race winners on the
grid.

This race would also be the the last race EVER at Carrell Speedway.

The May 31, 1954 issue of the Los Angeles Times reported the only
accident being Bob Rose flipping his car.
