He was so angry about the DQ ruling, he quit NASCAR for a while, but came back late in the season. 10. Anonymous posted: 12.24.2015 - 9:03 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) NASCAR ran separate Modified and Sportsman races prior to this race, Cotton Owens won the 106 mile (shortened from 125) Modified race in a 1938 Plymouth, Herb Thomas was second followed by Earl Moss, Jim Delaney and Dick Joslin. Danish Pie posted: 11.12.2018 - 12:51 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Bill Cornwall, a Chicago area driver making what would be his only Cup start, had a difficult time getting through pre-qualifying inspection. The previous year, Bob Pronger, also from the Chicago area, won the pole for this event, not without suspicions from officials that thought his '53 Oldsmobile to be "questionable". That coincided with Pronger supposedly and infamously sucker punching one official before the race. Apparently, owners thought that Pronger had a hand in the ownership of Cornwall's '54 Olds. When it came time to inspect his car, officials were in no hurry to inspect Cornwall's No. 53, leaving for lunch and taking their time to get back, Cornwall later recounted to journalist Stan Kalwasinski. Cornwall eventually had to get a copy of his loan information to show officials that he indeed fielded the car all his own. He went out to qualify 18th, and finish 53rd, twenty-nine laps down. 13.
