His father was a pioneer in racing, & is honored every year with the "Louie Vermeil Classic" sprint car race at California's Calistoga Speedway. 6. While I think IROC will let you pit to change a flat Sneva toughed it out instead and fell back. 8. Unser1 posted: 11.21.2019 - 11:51 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) The NASCAR guys had the weekend off for this one since they had raced mid-week for the Pepsi 400 on the Fourth of July at Daytona. Cale Yarborough famously lost that race to Richard Petty as the latter claimed his 200th and final NASCAR win but he bounced back to take advantage of Sneva's late troubles and win this one on an airport track where he'd hadn't raced on before. While this technically a home race for the CART racers, it was on the undercard for their Cleveland Grand Prix, Sneva's troubles meant that Gordon Johncock was the only one of the series' drivers to finish in the top-5 amid an unexpectedly strong showing for the NASCAR guys on a track where they never raced. 9.
