"So I'm confused on how Kyle Busch Motorsports won the owners title with William Byron and GMS Racing with Johnny Sauter did not when they were both full time drivers?" Someone pointed out (as I was confused at first too) that Brett Moffitt winning in the 11 Truck at Michigan knocked Peters out, as Timothy Peters' 17 Truck was on the bubble in Owner's Standings. Therefore, the 17 Truck failed to make the Chase, whereas Peters still made it since Brett (or anyone in the 11 Truck) didn't race full time. 100. Sean posted: 11.19.2016 - 1:36 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) The championship split is freaking cringeworthy because I honestly think it should have been the other way around. Byron was the best driver, but the #21 was the best team. Byron did nothing to lose the title himself but failed to advance because of an engine failure, which is not his fault, but is the team's fault. And now the team gets to claim a championship but he doesn't? Byron's comeback in this race was amazing. No surprise Larson took himself out by hitting the wall a few times, which I didn't even see, no thanks to the broadcast booth. They were emphasizing the final four too much for my liking, not even showing the race standings much of the time and never showing any of the non-championship contenders pitting (I would like to have seen what happened during Larson and Byron's pit stops to cause them to lose so many positions...) I was utterly flabbergasted when Byron jumped to 9th to 4th in a lap and at that point knew he had it won, leading to the cringeworthy result of the driver who deserved the title handing it to the team that didn't. Okay, Sauter did barely beat him in championship points but he surely would not have if NASCAR did not have such a strong consistency fetish that they think the difference between 2nd and 3rd should be equivalent to the difference between next to last and last. Having said that, I can accept that Sauter was ALMOST as deserving and definitely the 2nd most deserving this season and most deserving of the final four, and he was impressively clutch in claiming wins very late and passing Crafton very late to claim the championship (even though Crafton was ahead of Sauter the entire race, I honestly expected Sauter to take it the whole time considering how clutch he has been in races lately...) Peters just didn't have the speed of the others, and Bell was too inconsistent for me to remotely take him seriously. I agree ThorSport basically fell apart this season because of their shop fire, but they have time to recover and do have good sponsorship. I know he's been wildly erratic to date, but I do think Ben Rhodes should be the next first time winner probably (Justin Haley and Gragson are good but neither seems like a Byron to me.) I had never even heard of Staropoli or Boswell before tonight but Staropoli made his name known...that's for sure. 104. Mile501 posted: 11.19.2016 - 6:11 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Only the 4 drivers competing for the championship don't get bonus points, so what is shown is correct. Among those 4 drivers, Crafton was the only one who led laps in this race, and he is not awarded any bonus points. I would assume the same thing applies to the owner championship, which creates the very odd scenario where Byron gets bonus points, but the #9 team does not. What a messed up system this is. But, as much as I feel bad for Byron, it is in a way good to know that he would have won in the season-long format anyway. Jolly Mean Giant posted: 11.19.2016 - 3:02 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I would have to say out of the four that were remaining for this race, Sauter was probably the most deserving of the championship; was definitely the most consistent overall and had shown himself in recent weeks to step up to the challenge in big pressure situations. (Crafton would've been my second choice; Bell was too inconsistent and Peters was consistent but not particularly contending for wins on a regular basis). I felt like Sauter should've already won a title by this point (I remember a few years ago where he just narrowly lost out to Austin Dillon...erm, what year was that? 2011, I think?), so to see him finally emerge out on top felt pretty satisfying. I'm sure Johnny wishes his father could've been there to see him claim a NASCAR crown, but nonetheless, it's gotta feel good for him. Enjoy your Truck championship, Johnny NASCAR. Still kinda wished Byron would have made it considering that means he would have won the race and the championship, and it would've been a fitting way to cap off one of the most impressive rookie seasons we've ever seen in a major NASCAR series. The blown engine at Phoenix really had to hurt. But they walked away with the owners' title, which is...good, I guess? (Let's be honest, though, in twenty years NOBODY but the really devoted will actually care about who won the owners' title...) Big things are on this kid's plate in the future; with him moving up to Xfinity next year for JRM and no doubt driving for Hendrick in the Cup in the not too distant future. With how well he's run in just his first Truck season (although I'm sure having KBM equipment didn't hurt), I feel fairly confident in saying Hendrick is going to look like a genius-once again-in hiring this guy... Might as well add to what everyone else has said-Patrick Star(opoli) had one of THE worst debut performances for a driver in a major NASCAR series I've seen in a long, LONG time. Hope that's not indicative of his talent level; it's unfair to REALLY judge someone based off one race unless they REALLY bomb, but that...was not something to be proud of. 116. Briscoe dominated ARCA last year because of an extremely weak field where he was one of about three full-time drivers in a top tier car. Haley on the other hand has looked like the real deal from what I've seen and I think will certainly finish above people like Kaz Grala, Austin Wayne Self, and Cody Coughlin, even having to miss the first race. 131. Anonymous posted: 02.23.2017 - 4:37 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) I see Briscoe being very similar to Reddick, contending at most of the races while not producing many wins, but putting him in the final four in his rookie season, with only one year of stock car experience might be a far fetched idea, 2018 however. 132. JSPorts posted: 02.23.2017 - 6:51 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) I think the growing pains will be worse for Haley than Briscoe, compounded by the fact that BKR is probably a better team than GMS overall, though GMS did win the title last year. BKR also appears to have more Ford & Penske support than in the past. I see Grala as having a lot of talent, and I think Austin will improve this year. I'm not high on Cody Coughlin, but driving for ThorSport with a full-time sponsor, he'll be at least a fringe contender for wins & a playoff spot. Just a note, Haley has to miss the first 2 races of the season because he is under 18 until then. As for the Briscoe/Reddick comparison, I politely disagree. First, I believe BKR will be better this year than in past years. Second, Briscoe has nearly 5 times the experience Reddick did when he started in the trucks. I think Tyler's learning curve was much steeper than Briscoe's will be. 133. But I'm pretty sure Johnny Sauter still finished the year with the most amount of points in 2016, so under the pre-elimination format, which trucks used up until 2016, Sauter would have won the championship anyway. One of the few instances under this format where the eventual champion would have also won based purely on points. Other examples being Truex in 2017 and Kyle Busch in 2019 in the cup series. 138.
