Yeah, I know only Irvan retired immediately, but Park and Bodine didn't come back the same, and Franchitti's Talladega Busch crash pretty much broke any momentum he might have developed as a NASCAR driver before his return to IndyCar (not that he would have succeeded if even better oval drivers like Montoya and Hornish didn't.) 23. Sean posted: 10.09.2015 - 9:09 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) These days the real problem with Xfinity and trucks is that there isn't much talent elsewhere. There are usually fewer Cup drivers entered ever since the 'points in one series' rule which did somewhat work, but in spite of that, the emerging drivers still can't compete with them the way Junior, Kenseth, Randy LaJoie, Jeff Green, Truex, or Kyle Busch could. I think the problem right now is that the premier teams' Xfinity/truck drivers are lacking, relative to those 10-15 years ago, in part because the feeder series have been gutted too. 26. Big Mac Fan posted: 10.09.2015 - 9:10 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Add Tony Stewart to the list of drivers never the same, combined with all the stuff going the last 2 years. The thing is that Kyle's injuries weren't as serious as the others. Park had a brain injury and I don't remember what Bodine had, but it was serious as well. But they came back because they could and they wanted to. Ernie Irvan I think just wanted to call it quits. With all of the terrible crashes he's had he probably wanted to be done. Sp obviously Kyle would come back, it's no different than Park's 1998 Atlanta crash, either crash didn't effect their driving. 29. CrazyNASCARFan posted: 10.09.2015 - 9:11 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) What about Chris Buescher, Ryan Blaney, Chase Elliott and the like? Sean posted: 10.09.2015 - 9:11 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "Cup drivers in non-Cup races is literally pointless, because they get points in just the Cup races. Must be the money (includes sponsors) or owner points." I think most of the Cup drivers in minor league races say the practice helps them in the Cup race. I never used to buy that because Gordon/Johnson/Stewart were the most successful drivers of the last 20 years and their Busch careers were mostly lacking (relative to their Cup dominance). But now I would agree. The reduced horsepower in Cup seems to favor the late model drivers who did better in Busch/Nationwide than Cup (Harvick, Logano, Keselowski, Ky. Busch, Truex, etc...) and hurt the drivers from unusual backgrounds outside stock cars who usually struggled in Xfinity before doing better in Cup (Gordon, Johnson, Stewart, Newman, Kahne). All the late model guys who dominated in Busch more than in Cup are doing better and all the sprint car/off-road guys are doing worse. It can't be a coincidence. 31. CrazyNASCARFan posted: 10.09.2015 - 9:13 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) 28, Kyle Busch and Tony Stewart had somewhat similar injuries, so the main reason Kyle came off better is Stewart's an old guy and Kyle was almost 30 when injured, so he's healed better as he's younger than Stewart. 33. They run amongst the Cup drivers in the Xfinity races that have interlopers in the field." They do okay but I'm not awe-inspired by any of them. The Greens and LaJoies and Truexes could dominate races even with more Buschwhackers than we are now usually seeing, while those guys generally all run consistently but can't compete with today's Cup guys. Erik Jones and Ryan Blaney I think will be stars. Elliott will by default because there are so few stars coming up and he's taking over the #24, but I don't think he'll dominate all that much more than Austin Dillon has in Cup. Buescher - maybe if he gets a third Penske car; otherwise, he'll probably only be in Cup for like 2 years or so. 35. 88&4Fan posted: 10.09.2015 - 9:14 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) Ryan Ellis 24th... nice job so far 36. Big Mac Fan posted: 10.09.2015 - 9:18 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I agree Sean. I think the problem is that the developmental drivers aren't as good as we think they are, and that's why we've seen some flops lately. I know Gibbs and Penske have a monopoly, but Truex, Kenseth, Jr., Keselowski, Busch (as a rookie), and the regulars like LaJoie, Green, etc. had no problem schooling the cup drivers when they began to take over, usually in lesser equipment. Most regulars hardly crack the top 5 in the companion races, which I think speaks volumes about how much better the cup guys are. The development ladder is so broken in the the lower series that I don't think we'll see as many major superstars as we did in the early 2000's. 37. The Busch/Nationwide/Xfinity series went down the tubes the minute Cup owners started dumping large amounts of money/R&D/et al into their minor league series program. Yes, cup drivers have raced in the minor league since it began, but they owned their own equipment and had to pay everything themselves. That's why you never saw the Dale Earnhardts, Terry/Bobby Labontes, Dale Jarretts, Rusty Wallaces dominate this series they way the cup drivers do today. Make Cup regulars buy their own equipment in the Xfinity series, and I guarantee their dominance goes away immediately. If you don't believe me, see what Kyle Busch did in 2012 when he owned his own team, didn't win one race. 41. Without chase Elliott, and potentially Ty Dillon or Chris buescher as well, no one in the series could even come close to going head to head with Erik. He's been by far the most competitive against the cup guys of any driver in xfinity this season. Him and Ryan Blaney. 110. They tried DogeCoin for Josh Wise and sponsorship dried up after 2 races. 113. But that's just me..makes the most sense, he's the best driver not currently in cup. (Not counting current developmental guys) 114. I could see him easily putting up Almirola type numbers next year at RPM. That'd be a smart move for them. 115. Big Mac Fan posted: 10.10.2015 - 12:08 am Rate this comment: (1) (1) Part of me thinks that Regan will accomplish only a little more than Hornish did, considering they both had similar careers as Cup dropouts turned Xfinity regulars on good teams. If he can stay on JRM, that's probably his best bet. I personally think they should just shut the 9 down. They have had no sponsor all season except for a few races of Twisted Tea and other one offs (remember Medallion Bank is part owner of the team) so I think they would be losing money trying to field two cars. They should just focus all of their resources on Almiorla and become a single car team, because I think Almirola is the future of the team, not whoever they would hire for the 9. 116. b4il3y posted: 10.10.2015 - 1:42 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) 99. Right now, that's how all top-4 still have a fighting chance as there's less than a race spread between them, though the lower ones (Smith and Ty) would need some help. Chase would likely need a little help, in the form of Buescher laying an egg or simply having an issue, like a blown engine. Any of these 4 are deserving, IMO, if they can take the lead between now and the end of Homestead. At least, Ty's deserving due to being the best Xfinity driver on occasion this year, but he'd more deserving if he won one of the last few. He's winless due only to Signal Pirates/Cuppers/whatever you call them. Remember, regulars have won at Texas. 123. At least NBC Sports got a quick view of a safety worker bending over to grab some thin air. NASCAR has to bring out cautions to keep a certain amount of cars on the lead lap and to bunch up the field to magically make these races exciting again. And the bottom line on Ryan Reed is that he's only racing for Roush in Xfinity because of his diabetes. I do not believe he has ever raced with any other sponsorship. So as long as he has diabetes and has lilly's in his pocket, we will be forced to watch him run a winning Roush car 11th-20th week after week after week. 127.
