Had to hold off Carl Edwards on the last restart and Denny Hamlin on the last lap. Speaking of Denny Hamlin, he had to replace Kyle Busch for this race since Kyle Busch was parked after last night's Truck race where Kyle intentionally wrecked Ron Hornaday, Jr. 3. After everything he's gone through this year, from winning the Daytona 500, to his illness, to all the speculation about where he'll end up next year, it's good to see him stick it to the critics by not only winning, but taking his 1st NNS win from his Cup teammate who had dominated the race. Way to go, Trevor Bayne. 6. hyperacti posted: 11.05.2011 - 4:48 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Sadler was poised to gain many points on Stenhouse but it all changed late 7. . posted: 11.05.2011 - 5:00 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Congrats to Trevor on finally getting his first Nationwide win! I always knew he could be as aggressiuve as anyone when it counted, and his driving finish today proved that to me. But Bayne to me is one of those drivers that almost lays back and pounces when the time is right. I guess hanging around the Wood Brothers and hearing all those stories about David Pearson laying in the weeds, getting ready to strike, and doing so when the time is right rubbed off on him. Remember that he almost pulled that exact same maneuver on Edwards three weeks ago at Charlotte, but also knew when NOT to try a daring move, and settled for third place, as a result. But this time, on the outside, he knew he had room to make that move, pressed the issue, and passed Edwards, unlike what KurtBuschFan22 said, he did not hold off Edwards, who had the dominant car, but actually passed him and held off Denny Hamlin, subbing for a parked [and should be fired] Kyle Busch to win the race. Is it me, or is Trevor Bayne beginning to get two reputations. The first is that he sits back in about fifth to seventh place, waiting for the end to make his move, much like David Pearson, the last driver before Bayne to win the Daytona 500 for the Wood Brothers, who must be smiling right now if he watched the Nationwide race, knowing that's EXACTLY how he capture many of his victories, or Darrell Waltrip, or Jeff Gordon or Jimmie Johnson in more recent years. He doens't lead much, but when it counts, he's there, and might have scored his second Cup victory at Talladega if not for Ford orders, no matter what anyone else says. His second reputation seems to be eradicating bad headlines for NASCAR. Remember in this year's Daytona 500, everyone was still talking about the embarrassing pothole incident from last year's race, as well as the record number of cautions [16] and caution laps [61] in this year's race. But when Bayne, with some help from David Ragan's errant restart, pulled into victory lane, all that seemed to be forgotten. And now, with the headlines surrounding Jeremy Mayfield's arrest earlier in the week, and Kyle Busch's shenanigans from last night, which got him parked, and should get him fired, NASCAR REALLY needed something good to happen, and Bayne seemd to be the knight in shining armor to give them that good news, again. This is why I compared Bayne's Daytona 500 victory this year favorably to Johnny Rutherford's victory in the 1974 Indianapolis 500, which came not only after the tragic 1973 race at Indy, but it also came in the midst of the energy crisis. That comparison makes it somewhat ironic that Bayne's late-race conquest occurs basically in Rutherford's hometown of Fort Worth, Texas. Somehow, I don't think this is exactly a coincidence that Bayne's first Nationwide Series win comes under these circumstances, as Bayne, in my mind, has for the second time this year, lifted NASCAR out of bad headlines, and into good ones. And by the way, where was Jack Roush during all this? In victory lane? No, I didn't see him there. He may have showed up later after the broadcast ended. Rather, he was talking to Edwards, consling him after his defeat in a race he had thoroughly dominated until the final seven laps. If you're the car owner for a victory, especially if it's a first victory, you should go striaght to victory lane first, but Roush didn't. To me, unless I missed something, and I may have, that is totally classless. If Roush doesn't find Bayne sponsorship for next year, I hope he leaves. You know Gibbs, Hendrick, Childress, Ganassi, and Penske would have gone straight to victory lane, but not Roush, at least not according to what I saw. The scary thing abot this is for Bayne's competitors is that it might give Bayne the confidence to run harder for longer, and if that happens, look out. [There should be an explanation point there, but the number keys on my main keyboard don't work on the internet. To use numbers, I have to use the special numbers pad.] 9. 00andJoe posted: 11.05.2011 - 5:11 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Congrats Trevor!!! 10. 00andJoe posted: 11.05.2011 - 5:11 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) #51 sponsor: TRA Homes #30 sponsor: ABF/U-Pack Moving 11. 18fan posted: 11.05.2011 - 5:24 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Denny Hamlin could've won this race if he got a better restart when he was next to Edwards and not let Bayne get down in front of him. One more lap and I think we're talking about a Denny Hamlin win. cjs, do think Carl Edwards should have been fired for what he did at Atlanta and Gateway to Brad Keselowski last year? Because that was more premeditated and done at an equally dangerous place on the racetrack. And then a few months later he hooks Brad Keselowski into the outside wall in front of the entire field, blatantly intentionally, which put Brad in serious danger. If you think Kyle should be fired by Gibbs, then you should think that Carl should've been fired last year by Roush. 12. cjs3872 posted: 11.05.2011 - 5:51 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) 18fan, you're missing the point here. Kyle Busch has had a track record of being a punk since he first got into the Cup Series, which is longer than Edwards' track record. And the last time I checked, Edwards didn't get a speeding ticket for going 128 MPH down a country road, either. That proves that Kyle Busch doesn't even care about his own well being, much less the well being of others. Edwards sure isn't an angel, but compared to Kyle Busch, everyone could be considered an angel, even Dale Earnhardt, Sr., the dirtiest driver in the history of the sport, because he did all his dirty work while in the competition and never interfered with the flow of the race, if it didn't affect his own race. As for Edwards, he should have been sat down for qa race in all the series he competed in after his run-in with Brad Keselowski at Atlanta, but remember that nobody had any idea that Keselowski's car would sail, least of all, Edwards. Sure, he wanted to spin him out and crash him, ruining what would have been a top-five run, but nobody had any idea that Keselowski's car would get airborne like that. As for what happened at St. Louis, I had no real problem with that, except for the number of other cars [about six or eight] that got involved in that incident, though I wish he would have tagged him in the left rear, instead of the right rear. And remember what happened between Matt Kenseth and Jeff Gordon in 2006? Kenseth spun out Gordon at the end of the spring race at Bristol, which led to a post-race altercation. But Gordon filed that away in his memory bank, and when they dueled at the finish of the race at Chicagoland later that year, Gordon paid him back, but in a racing situation, which I have no real problem with. That's the way guys like Allison, Yarborough, and Earnhardt would settle matters. They would wait until it aided them the most, while costing their victims the most when planning a payback. And remember how I compared Trevor Bayne's victory today with the style of wins that David Pearson routinely got, as he sat back like The Silver Fox used to always do. Here's another irony about that. Bayne's winning car number today is the same as Pearson's first car number. The car number, of course, is 16. That little tidbit of information was first revealed to the nation late in the 1983 Daytona 500, as Ken Squier revealed the number of Pearson's very first race car was 16. 13. chris posted: 11.05.2011 - 5:58 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) good job trevor on your win 14. cjs3872 posted: 11.05.2011 - 6:06 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) And by the way, Reed Sorenson closed to within five points of Justin Allgaier [and Aric Almirola] for third in the standings. While, I and many other race fans don't really care whether or not Sorenson finishes ahead of Almirola, I think that all race fans want to see Sorenson finish ahead of Allgaier and stick it to Steve Turner. By the way the title battle between Stenhouse and sadler finished today in a virtual draw, which is good news for Stenhouse, since all he needs to do is watch Sadler. There's a good likelyhood that all Stenhouse needs is two more lead lap finishes, and the title is his. and if things break the right way next week at Phoenix, Stenhouse could clinch a week early. If Stenhouse gains 20-22 points on Sadler next week [from 17 to between 35 and 40], he effectively clinches the title, considering that all the start-and-parks would take the positions that Sadler would need Stenhouse to finish in, if the points lead doubles in Phoenix, and he mathematically clinches the title if he were to gain 31 points on Sadler. However, if the reverse happens, we could be looking at the first winless NASCAR champion in a major touring series. And doesn't it seem that Stenhouse and his team are racing a little too conservatively. I know they don't want to take any chances, but they seem to be running a little too far back to me. 15. cjs3872 posted: 11.05.2011 - 6:12 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) And I just noticed something a little unusual. The top nine finishers all started in the top ten. The only top ten starter not to finish in the top ten was Brian Scott, who sterted seventh. and he finished a "measley" 12th. To take this a step further, Brian Vickers was the only driver that started outside the top 12 that finished in tthe top 12, as he started 21st. The only top 12 starter not to finish in the top 12 was Jason Leffler, who crashed late, bringing out the final caution period. the caution period that gave Bayne a shot at the win, which he took and ran with. Leffler wound up 15th. Obviously, this is not a good sign for the health of the series. Ironically however, none of the top finishers finished in the same position in which he started the race. 16. Then, much like Bobby Allison didn't count on Richard Petty having much of a chance to beat him in the 1981 Daytona 500, Carl Edwards didn't count on Trevor Bayne making the move on him that won the race, even admitting so after the race [shame on you, Carl]. I'm not sure what was better for the NASCAR fan, Bayne, a Nationwide regular, despite winning the Daytona 500, winning the race over the Sprint Cup stars, or outfoxing and outsmarting them on the final restart to do it. 18. I still say he is going to have a solid career in NASCAR (if nothing else, he'll probably match Clint Bowyer's career, but in the best case scenario he'll probably end up with a Matt Kenseth-like career). SO glad that an established Cup guy did not win this one and that a driver who is still considered a Nationwide regular did. "As for what happened at St. Louis, I had no real problem with that" I did, since I didn't think there was any reason for Carl to wreck him on the straightaway in front of the field like that. As far as I see it, all the issues from Atlanta and before had been resolved by that point, and all Brad did in that race was overdrive his car in Turn 1. That whole thing just rubs me completely the wrong way. 27. cjs3872 posted: 11.05.2011 - 11:28 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) RCRandPenskeGuy, I had no real problem with the act itself. The only things I didn't like was how he wrecked Keselowski and the number of oter car that would up being involved. And Bayne may be more than you think he's going to be if he continunes to be able to outfox his competition like he did. And remember that what you do in the Nationwide Series rarely translates to Cup, so Bayne, who's had a pedestrian career in the Nationwide Series, especially in comparison to those such as Keselowski, and even Ricky Stenhouse, may turn the tables in Cup, as his more patient driving style is more suited to Cup. Remember that even though he won the race, he only led the final six laps, which is typical of him. He really doesn't appear until the end, which is why I compare his driving style to that of the Wood Brothers' greatest driver, David Pearson, and today's win for him was a vintage Pearson-style victory, along with that of Benny Parsons and the Labonte brothers. He did the same thing at Charlotte, not really appearing among the leaders until the end of the race. Had he not had fuel problems in the Cup race at Charlotte, he might have been a contender for the win there, and if his confidence continues to grow, I wouldn't be completely surprised to see him drive the Wood Brothers' car to victory lane in something other than a restrictor plate race next year, and they haven't won on an intermeidate track since Morgan Shepherd won the blizzard-delayed race at Atlanta in the spring of 1993 on fuel mileage. In fact, the Woods really haven't won a race without odd circumstances intervening since 1982, when Neil Bonnett won the World 600 for them, but Bayne might very well change that next year, if his confidence continues to grow, and his pit crew doesn't fail him. Who knows, Bayne might even score the Woods' 100th victory in the future, unless Roush graduates him to his Cup operation. I think a monster might have been unknowingly released on the NASCAR world [in a good way] today, but only time will tell. I believe all Bayne needed was a shot of confidence. Now that he has it, he may be the heavy favorite for the Nationwide Series title next year, if he can get enough sponsorship to run the full season, and if the health problems of earlier this year don't flare up again. 28. Obviously, Bayne can't pull that off this weekend, since he won the Daytona 500 in February. Interstingly, each of the last two Daytona 500 winners got their first Cup victory before their first Nationwide victory, as Jamie McMurray, last year's Daytona 500 winner, also got his first Cup win before getting his first Nationwide victory. And we can't forget that two-time NASCAR champion Tony Stewart [and it would be three if Stewart gets the title this year] got his first Cup win five and a half years before winning in the Nationwide Series. It's also interesting that Bayne mentioned that he was glad to win a race where he didn't have to have help, as he did it all on his own, outfoxing and outgunning three of Sprint Cup's best on the final restart to do it, instead of tag-teaming as he did in the Daytona 500. It's also ironic that he led the same number of laps in each victory [6], and never had the lead until the final six laps of each race. Again, he may be starting to get a reputation as a driver that just lays in the weeds, not showing everything he has until late, and making the other drivers wonder what he has, which would make him a very dangerous driver to have to deal with in late-race situations, simply because Bayne's competitors may not know what he has left, while they've been racing all out the entire race. 36. jabber1990 posted: 11.06.2011 - 11:06 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) so, with the nationwide series full of cup drivers lets look at the 2 nationwide drivers who have ran cup races Trevor Bayne won the daytona 500. So what non cup teams are successful in the nationwide series? Dale Earnhardt Inc. (aka Hendrick Motersports) FILLED UP Rusty Wallace Racing FILLED UP Turner Motersports JUST GOT FIRED FROM Who is Reed Sorenson going to race for? Theres such a big gap in the "haves, and the have nots". It's not like it used to be. Who's he going to race for and be competitive with? The only team I can think of is Kenny Wallace's team. Sam Hornish Jr. finished in the top 10 for the 4th time in 11 starts in 2011 (14.7 avg fin). But after finishing in the top 5 from his first 3 poles this year, he's had finishes of 14th and 9th in the last 2. Brian Vickers has finishes of 8th, 10th and 10th in his 3 starts since replacing Reed Sorenson in the #32 Turner Motorsports car. Danica Patrick finished in the top 15 for the 6th time in 10 starts this season (15.6 avg fin). Reed Sorenson's 16th place finish ties for MacDonald Motorsports' 2nd best finish in 2011; it's just their 7th top 20 finish in 40 total starts this year. 43.
