May 9, 1992 was the same day they announced that young Jeff Gordon was moving to Hendrick Motorsports to drive a third entry for the team. It was a surprising move at the time because Gordon was a Ford driver with Bill Davis. Also the field was set by points because it rained all weekend at Nazareth. Busch Grand National teams were set by points on the inside row and Busch North drivers were set by 1991 points on the outside row. 1991 Busch North champion Ricky Craven would have been on the outside of the front row, but since he was running in the Busch Grand National Series, he was set by his 1992 BGN points. Dick McCabe sat on the outside row but wanted to move to the back field so he didn't hold guys up. Unfortunately for McCabe he was involved on a lap 3 wreck with Mike Wallace and others. 9. awesomebillfan9 posted: 12.20.2014 - 1:54 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Interesting strategy occurred around lap 120 in this race and it cost Mark Martin the race. Martin was far and way the fastest car out there that day but his team pitted from the lead around lap 117. At the time the top three, Martin, Todd Bodine and Bobby Labonte hadn't stopped and needed to get fuel since teams could only go about 115-120 green flag laps on gas. Robert Pressley, meanwhile, was fourth and had pitted earlier for fuel. He could go the rest of the way on fuel. So Martin pits from the lead and has a 30+ second pit stop which put him a lap down behind Bodine and about a straightaway behind Pressley. Martin was faster on the fresh rubber and needed the race to stay green. Meanwhile, Bodine led and pitted from the lead about three laps later. Bodine and his team gambled and took fuel only and only got 1 can of fuel, which took about 7 seconds. Bodine stayed on the lead lap and was in front of Pressley. Bodine needed another caution flag. When Bodine pitted it put Labonte in the top spot. On lap 135 Richard Lasater, Joe Bessey and others spun to bring out a caution flag. The caution kept Martin a lap down and put Bodine, Labonte and Pressley on the lead lap. During the 1992 season, teams could only change two tires under a caution flag, which made played into Martin's strategy. Also it was the first race that teams used radial tires and tires were not falling off as much as normal. Bodine's team noticed tires were not falling off as much and took the gamble and it paid off. Martin wouldn't get his lap back until David Donahue would spin on lap 167. Martin restarted 9th and tried to chase down the leaders. Martin had to deal with lap traffic under the caution period. Martin worked his way to third and was catching and just couldn't chase down Bodine and Labonte. Both Labonte and Bodine had a pretty good battle at the end of the race but Bodine held him off. Pressley was a contender until he pitted late in the race under a caution flag to fix his wheel, which had come loose and his engine began to lose power. One more not on the race, with about 3 laps to go Martin Truex spun and banged the outside wall. There was a debate about a caution flag but Truex got the car on pit road and the race stayed green so it didn't effect the finish. If this was 2014 and a Cup guy was chasing down two NNS regulars, you know for sure a caution flag would have been thrown to see what Martin could have done with the leaders. Let me just say it was the right thing to keep it green and put a perfect ending on a fantastic race. 10. I'm going to take an educated stab at who the other driver in the Busch series at that time was that was offered the Hendrick deal 2 weeks before Jeff Gordon was and said they turned it down out of respect for their current car owner. Absolutely had to be Kenny Wallace. He was bailed out of a bad situation by Felix Sabates so he'd feel like he owed it to him to drive for him in Cup the following season as well. Bobby Labonte's owner was his dad and he ended up going with Bill Davis and Ford in Cup and I really wonder if it was the same plan and timetable as they had set up for Jeff Gordon. Todd Bodine, the Burton brothers, Robert Pressley, Ricky Craven, Joe Nemechek (he was his current owner), Steve Grissom, Chuck Bown, Mike Wallace, Butch Miller, Tracy Leslie, Tom Peck, Bobby Dotter, Jack Sprague and even Richard Lasater all stayed in full time Busch rides in 93. Jeff Burton ended up with Baby Ruth as his sponsor the next year. It had to be Kenny Wallace that turned Rick Hendrick down out of respect for his current owner because he's likely the only one that had a sure deal already planned for a Cup ride in 93 with Sabates. The only other one I can see that it may have been would be Bobby Labonte, but I'd guess Kenny. 13.
