But it was marred by a crash that nearly claimed eventual champion Joe Nemechek. Nemechek was running on lap 75 when he was caught up in a multi-car wreck. His car burst into flames, and if not with the help of Todd Bodine and Tom Peck, Nemechek would have parished. Nemechek would race with burns for the next 6 weeks. 2. Randy MacDonald hit the Turn 2 wall head on with enough force to send the hood flying through the air. His car caught fire, slid to the bottom of the track where it was hit by Michael Waltrip. Later in the race, Robert Huffman and Dave Rezendes tangled, and that accident also saw a fire break out, although it was short lived.(As was MacDonald's.) 3. It seems to skip laps in a couple of places--sometime after the 2nd caution and then again after the green flag following the Big One but before Butch Miller blew an engine. 14 of 44 starters (based on my count) were Cup regulars at the time, and it was some of the best of the best--Earnhardt, Elliott, Allison, Irvan, both Waltrips, etc. And a couple more DNQ'ed (Gant and Texas Terry). There was a nice little story in the pre-race about Earnhardt going out with Nemechek in practice and helping him learn how to draft, and Nemechek got scared a couple of times. Jeff Burton picked up a 5 lap penalty for spinning in pit road. Jimmy Spencer was also penalized a lap, but made it up and was in the pack racing for the win Cautions: Laps 16-21 (Cars #:01, 98, 30, 20, 09 Accident turn 2) --possibly more cars Laps 31-39 (Cars #: 39, 79 Accident turn 2) Laps 67?-73 (Cars #: 9, 21 Accident turn 2) --not sure if the 21 was on the lead lap Laps 75-83 (Cars #: 87, 44, 63, 19, 30, 99, 34, 20, 25, 6, 45 Accident turn 2) Laps 90?-96 (Car #25 Accident turn 4) --don't think he was on the lead lap Laps 112-115 (Car #75 Engine trioval) During the final caution Bob Jenkins mentions that it was the 7th caution, but the other caution wasn't in the video. My best guess is that it would be when Jeff Gordon's engine blew, but I don't have laps. Hopefully somebody else will be able to help fill in the gaps. 18. jC... posted: 02.21.2017 - 8:28 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) No Buick's made the field. 19. Even though he was one of the Blue Oval Boys's big dogs in the early 1990s he had been running Chevrolets and Buicks in the undercard series before making the jump back to the Dearborn brand here. All of Allison's starts from here on out though would be a Ford Thunderbird like his Cup car... 20. Gant was to debut a new sponsorship from MAC Tools on his #7, while the new deal would see an unexpected wait to get on track Gant would make it worth it when it did... 21.
