Paul posted: 10.27.2013 - 3:28 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) Dale Earnhardt managed to overcome a black flag penalty from earlier in the race (while leading) to win his third Goody's 300 race in the Busch Grand National Series at Daytona. The black flag penalty came as a result of grease coming out of Earnhardt's car and into the paths of the drivers who were behind him. Earnhardt would go on to win the next four Busch races at Daytona, and still holds the record for the most consecutive season-opening victories at Daytona in the Busch/Nationwide Series (Five straight wins from 1990 to 1994; Tony Stewart ranks 2nd with four straight wins from 2008 to 2011.). Harry Gant had probably the best car at the end of the race, but waited too long to make his move towards the front. He said in his post-race interview that he could have passed Earnhardt several laps earlier, but being out in front before the last lap would have resulted in him running out of fuel. Earnhardt pitted later than Gant, so fuel wasn't an issue for him, but Gant knew he couldn't risk it and took a more conservative approach in trying to win this race. Gant also stated that his car would get very loose when there was a car right behind him, which explains why he seemed so hesitant to pass Dale Jarrett and Greg Sacks for 3rd and 2nd place, respectively, in the closing laps, as he did not want them on his bumper and risk losing control of his car. He passed Jarrett when Jarrett's car dropped off the pace as they were coming to three laps to go, and he passed Sacks a lap later after Sacks had to get out of the throttle for a brief moment in order to avoid a lapped car, but he simply ran out of time in passing Earnhardt for the win. Had he had more fuel left in the tank and/or had a better handling race car in those final laps, there's a good chance that Harry Gant would have won this race, thus placing him on the exclusive list of drivers who have won at Daytona International Speedway. The 23-car crash on lap 13 was triggered after Brad Teague got loose while racing side-by-side with Dale Jarrett near the front of the field, causing his car to slide up the track and get sideways in front of the rest of the field. It's hard to say whether Teague's car got sideways as a result of making contact with Jarrett's car or not, but Darrell Waltrip was the first car to run into Teague and from there the entire track was blocked. Third place finisher Greg Sacks narrowly missed getting clipped in the left rear by Waltrip as his car darted up the track after contact with Teague. Ronald Cooper was taken to Halifax Medical Center and was treated for a possible concussion and chin fracture as a result of this big wreck. Dale Jarrett was running in 3rd place with four laps to go when his car suddenly slowed coming through the tri-oval. His car was then seen swerving back-and-forth going down the backstretch. The announcers never gave an explanation for why Jarrett's car fell off the pace, so I'm not sure if something broke on the car or if he just ran out of fuel. Rookie driver Bobby Labonte looked really good in this race. With his father Bob serving as the crew chief (and car owner) and brother Terry serving as his spotter, the Labonte team's gameplan was for young Bobby, who was making his very first superspeedway start, to follow veteran drivers like Darrell Waltrip and Dale Earnhardt and learn how to race at Daytona just by watching how they did it. It worked out very well as Labonte helped create a 3-car breakaway at the front of the field (along with Earnhardt and Jimmy Hensley) just by staying in line, led the race for 18 laps, and had a top five run going before fading back to 6th place at the very end. Although he would not win a Busch Series race in 1990, Labonte would go on to win Rookie of the Year after a 4th place points finish before winning the championship the following season and going on to have a successful career at the Cup level. This race truly was Labonte's breakout performance, and one that would set the tone for the next 10-15 years of his career. 25. Anonymous posted: 12.10.2013 - 6:49 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Labonte would have won Rookie of the Year but until 2001 the maximum number of races a driver could run in a season and remain eligible was five. Bobby ran six races in 1988 and seven in 1989, so he wasn't officially a rookie in 1990. 28.
