Although his pole speed was almost 4 MPH higher than second place
starter Dale Earnhardt, Tim Richmond's car struggled to hold the lead
before retiring on lap 63.

The top 2 finishers were full-time Cup drivers. This has been a problem
for a long time.

True, but they were driving for themselves.

The only big-time owner there was Rick Hendrick with Tim Richmond
driving, but that organization was still new at the time.

You could look at it as a warning sign of things to come, though.

booth with Jack Arute in the pits.
