He was battling cancer at the time and died just a few weeks later. This was the final race he ever got to attend, and he couldn't have picked a better race to be his last. At .002 seconds, this was the closest finish in Southeast Series history and one of the closest finishes in NASCAR history. From the official race report: "When the white flag was displayed, Bradberry had his Bradberry Racing Chevrolet on the highside of the track and was racing Bigley for the lead with Porter tight behind Bigley's Chevrolet. Bradberry's car inched ahead of Bigley's car as the two drivers came off of turn two with Bradberry still on the highside and Porter on the lowside of the backstretch.. When the three Chevrolet's were between turns three and four Bigley's car pushed up in front of Bradberry trying to get a run off of the corner for the checkered flag. That allowed Porter to take his car low in turn four and race door handle to door handle with Bigley to the line." David Reutimann and Eddie Mercer had identical qualifying times, but Reutimann got the pole nod due to being higher in points. Wayne Bowen in the #23 was a DNS. He collected a whole $300 after crashing on his second qualifying lap. Fifth caution - 40 accident turn 1 Porter's winnings - $7,125 Reutimann's winnings - $2,650 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
