Scott Gaylord inherited the lead and Jason Small moved up to second. There was just one problem, though: the pace car picked up Small as the leader and Gaylord stopped to let the pace car by...only for the pits to be opened as soon as the pace car picked up Gaylord, stranding him out on the track while the rest of the leaders made their stops. Gaylord had to pit with the lapped cars the next time around, and race control refused to listen to the team's pleas about the pace car's unusual behavior putting Gaylord in a bind.
