I rented the track for a weekend in Sept. of that year (The Washington History of Motorsports Festival) and the track management contacted me about putting a 1/2 hour show on for the Nascar race. I had about 20 vintage sport racing cars including a gullwing Mercedes, a Yenko Corvair, The "Scepter", a D-sports special powered by a Mercury 6 cyl. outboard engine, Alfas, 2 Shelby Mustangs, etc. After the race, Dale Earnhardt went out of his way to come and find me to tell me that he really enjoyed the vintage cars. I very much apprieciated his effort and will always remember what a nice man he was. The gullwing spun out twice in 20 minutes.....I hope Dale had the enjoyment of seeing that. 5. Was that Mercedes loose or was the driver just too aggressive? Owner- #3 Dale Earnhardt- Bill Schmitt Earnhardt's car for this race was a spare Bill Schmitt entry and had the same white-and-green California Cooler paint job as the other car. Earnhardt's #3 had offset numbers, the car was a #73 like Schmitt's car that had the #7s removed. The Intimidator won this race but it wasn't a walkover. His Monte Carlo got a flat tire early and Earnhardt had to race back up through the field once he pitted for new rubber. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
