There was a big wreck at the start of this one that turned both Butch Miller and Dave Sensiba's Pontiacs into fireballs and brought out an immediate red flag. The wreck started when Rick Johnson clipped Miller and spun him on the backstretch, collecting Scott Hansen and another car and setting off a chain reaction melee. Miller backed it in the wall, breaking the fuel cell in his car and spraying fuel everywhere. The accident caused a second wreck behind them that saw Sensiba pound the wall and catch fire and collected additional cars including Mike Eddy and Philip Kranefuss. Miller's #52 Pontiac became fully engulfed in flames after Miller bailed out and practically burnt to the ground in the accident. In total 17 of the 40 cars in this race were collected in the crash, in part because it happened right at the front of the field. Miller was disappointed, he had a good car and tested at Nashville before this race, but at least he was able to joke afterward about "win or be spectacular." 2.
