It had it all. A 100+ lap green flag run, a random rain delay, teammates racing for the lead and crashing, a sprint to the finish, and questionable penalties. What more can you ask for in a short track race??? 69 sponsor - Shearer Racing 69 owner - Dale Shearer He bought the car from the Kimmels and said he didn't want to bother repainting it. I guess his old silver car finally bit the dust, I know he wrecked it hard at Salem last spring. 2. 34McDowellFan posted: 06.15.2019 - 11:23 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Ty Gibbs looked like he could've got yet another 2nd place finish until he got a penalty on the last restart Hailie Deegan blew an engine late in the race and caused a red flag, which was the 2nd red flag due to a rain delay around lap 150-160 (Can't remember exactly) Chirstian Eckes spun trying to take the lead at one point And Chandler Smith continues to impress, leading 166/200 laps en route to his 4th career win in only his 14th start, by the way, he's still 16. 3. Instead, a 12th place finish in the 1988 Snap-On Tools 500 at Salem speedway still stands as his best career finish after 31 years of racing 5. rm posted: 06.15.2019 - 3:23 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Brad was actually running behind Tim Richmond when he pulled off. He would have likely finished in the same spot if he had kept going until the end. 1 sponsor - Fast Track High Performance Driving School 55 sponsor - Toyota Racing Development 40th Anniversary 6. He most recently finished in that spot in 2016 at DuQuoin 7. Dallas posted: 06.16.2019 - 3:18 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Another dominating performance by the hottest ARCA/K&N level prospect. Chandler looks unstoppable. 8. rm posted: 06.17.2019 - 7:19 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Since a replay of the race has yet to surface on Youtube, a recap/storylines: Chandler Smith got the jump on the start and just opened up a lead on the field. Had about a half-straightaway on Ty Gibbs who had another half-straightaway gap on the next car. Carson Hocevar was running 3rd early on, but about halfway through the first run he hit the wall and starting dropping back quick. It became apparent that there were 8 cars that could really keep up: the top-8 finishers in the final results, minus Braden, plus Deegan. Kept wondering how long the opening stint was going to go, nobody had to pit for any tire or mechanical issue though so the green flag run stretched past 100 laps. By that point you could definitely tell that a lot of these kids have never run 100 consecutive green flag laps at a short track before in race conditions. Hocevar had fallen nearly two laps down, Deegan had gone down a lap, and Smith was on the verge of lapping into the top 5 when the caution finally came out for Heim backing it into the turn 3 fence. Didn't see what happened, but based on the 21 being listed as involved I'll hazard a guess that Mayer got antsy about going a lap down and drove it in too deep and dumped Heim. Not long after the restart, Joe Graf wrecked in turn 4 and had to limp around with a flat left front tire. It was at about that point it started to rain lightly. It had been raining at times earlier in the day, during pre-race, but it never really got too steady or stuck around too long. The rain really wasn't sticking too the track, but it was misting pretty heavily, if you can imagine that. Ty Gibbs had just passed Chandler Smith when they threw the yellow for the rain, and it looked like there was a possibility he might back into his first ARCA win that way. The officials knew that the rain wasn't very heavy, wasn't going to continue much longer, and that the track had not been lost at all, so I don't think there was ever any doubt that the race would restart shortly. Before the race was red-flagged, the pits opened up and the 20, 21 and 28 all came down to take their last 2 tires. Smith was a surprise pit from 2nd place, but it turned out that crew chief Billy Venturini's call to come and take the 2 tires played a huge part in Smith's eventual win. After a red flag of 15 minutes or so, the race went back under caution and the rest of the lead-lap cars pit. Billy V's pit call gave Chandler Smith the lead, while the other contenders such as Michael Self and Ty Gibbs could only restart as high as fourth. That didn't stop Self, though, and he quickly made his way to the lead after the restart. Some fantastic back-and-forth between Smith, Self, Christian Eckes and Gibbs ensued for a few laps - you could throw a blanket over the top 5 at that point. It was go time. It all came to an end when Eckes got a little too aggressive coming off of turn 4 while racing under Self for the lead and spun into the inside wall. Supposedly he may have gotten a nudge from Smith coming out of the corner, but I didn't see that from my perspective. Have yet to see a replay though, to be completely fair here. That set up a ~15 lap shootout with Eckes now relegated to the rear of the lead lap cars. With one less car in contention at the front, Smith had a better opportunity to get back to the lead. Just after he passed Self following the restart, Deegan grenaded her engine big time and forced another yellow to come out. After a quick observation of the track, the officials quickly realized there was a lot of fluid laid down and a second red flag was displayed to ensure that there would still be some laps left to run. I can't recall an Ilmor blowing up that spectacularly since they've entered the series. She had ran pretty solidly all day up to that point, definitely a better effort than her first ARCA short track start at Toledo. When the race went back green, Michael Self spun the tires on the inside lane and stacked the field up behind he and Chandler Smith. Smith was gone and on his way to victory lane. Gibbs was hit with a controversial penalty for changing lanes before the start-finish line, a rule that has been strengthened since Christopher Bell's infamous 4-wide run to win from 8th at Chicagoland a couple years ago. The penalty cost Gibbs a podium finish, and he was doomed to 8th place. Travis Braden picked up his first top five of the season, despite being 2 laps down with under 40 laps to go. It's been a trying season for Braden, who has largely been underwhelmed with his team's finishes so far despite being the points leader at times. Up until last week at Michigan, he had yet to finish better than 7th all year. There's a tight turnaround - again - to Gateway next week, where several young drivers will make their "superspeedway" debut, if you can really call Gateway that. It's still really anyone's race for the championship, with Michael Self holding a pretty slim lead over Bret Holmes. Travis Braden is still within striking distance if his team can find a rhythm, and Christian Eckes is far from out of the hunt despite missing a race. The ARCA title race has turned into runaways at the end for several years in a row now, and there hasn't been a title fight this closely contested since 2012, when the top 4 finished within 160 points at the year's end. There's still a tumultuous stretch of the season to go in the second half, with a pair of mile-and-a-halfs, the bullring at Elko, and both dirt races still to go. Those events have been some of the wildest on the circuit in the last few years. 9. rm posted: 06.17.2019 - 10:26 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Crew chief updates: 1 crew chief - on this site as Steve Barton (goes by Steven) 06 crew chief - on this site as Bradley Frye 10 crew chief - on this site as Mike Srouffe (Sroufe is correct spelling) 10. Ilmor and series officials have said something in the rear end broke to cause what appeared to be a spectacular engine failure. 12.
