He continued with LF damage to finish 8th. Congrats to Brandon Jones who goes 2 for 2 in the ARCA Racing Series. 6. riven3d posted: 07.26.2014 - 8:09 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) "Justin Boston had a huge lead and was running away with it until hitting a spun car (not sure who) on the outside of turn 2. I was at the race so I'll have a entire review posted later today, but the #97 was clearly down a cylinder the entire race. His teammate in the #40 car was lapped on lap 3 and was given the black flag 3 times within the first 10 laps for not making minimum speed, the #97 was slightly more on pace and was in the garage for several minutes before returning. Ciccarelli was at the autograph session before the race and seemed like a really nice guy. He was giving out free pens with his sponsors name and logo on them. 12. Compared to some previous visits, it was very easy to get to the track and park this year. Tickets was very reasonably priced, many local Indiana Menards stores had tickets available at the customer service desks for $20, and all tickets were good for both races. We got to the track around 6:10, just as the last couple ARCA cars were finishing qualifying, and had some time to walk around before the ARCA CRA late model race started at 7:00. One of the booths outside the track was selling limited edition Frank Kimmel 1:43 scale diecasts for just $5, I had no ideal those were even made so I snapped on up. At about 6:30 the ARCA series autograph session started outside the track. Compared to the nightmares I've endured at IMS with cup series autograph sessions, this one was awesome, it took less than 5 minutes from getting in line to getting through all the drivers. 16 different drivers were at the session and I got autographs from Justin Allison, Kyle Weatherman, Karl Weber, Mike Senica, Grant Enfinger, Brandon Jones, Thomas Praytor, Wayne Edwards, Bobby Gerhart, Michael Lira, Ray Ciccarelli, Mason Mitchell, Shannon McIntosh, Austin Wayne Self, Frank Kimmel (who signed the 1:43 scale diecast of his I had just bought), and Tom Hessert III. None of the late model drivers were there because their race was about to start. I got to see the top ten late model starters introduced, Kyle Busch got a quick cheer followed by a loud chorus of boos. I didn't see who it was because they were started towards the rear but the #33 late model car had a "Ricky Bobby" inspired paint scheme like the one Kurt Busch ran at Talladega in 2012, the "ME" car complete with the cougar on the hood. We had great seats, about 6 rows up and about 10 feet to the left of the starters stand and the start finish line. From our seats we could easily see 95% of the track at all times. Karl Weber and his manager actually came out to see the last 20-30 laps of the late model race before they had to leave for pre-race prep and sat right down from us. He seems like a great kid and I hope he gots a shot in good equipment someday. The late model cars put on an amazing and surprisingly clean race. About 40 laps in Busch dove low on Kenseth for the lead, and when he tried to tuck back inside on the frontstretch he didn't realize that Nemechek had gotten to his outside and he ALMOST went spinning into the inside wall. If it was anyone besides Busch in that, probably 4-5 cars would have been taken out in a huge crash there. For the last 30 laps Kyle Busch dove low in turn 4 on Nemechek before tucking back inside down the front stretch, after about 10 minutes of this I realized that he wasn't actually trying to take the lead every lap, he was just messing with John a little bit. On lap 95 I realized he was going to wait until the last lap to make his move and he timed in perfectly. There was some beating and banging but there were plenty of opportunities for more contact on both drivers part that weren't taken. After his burnouts the first thing Busch did was walk over and talk to Nemechek for a few seconds and the two shook hands, then Busch went over to do the victory lane interviews. Busch got more boos than cheers during his interview, followed by a THUNDERING chours of boos when he said "I won it like Earnhardt would have". He also said "racing against guys like me is what gives attention and opportunities to guys like John Nemechek", which sounded like a passive aggressive FU to the people than complain about him running lower series races. After that race there was about a 30 minute break before ARCA driver introductions. Concession prices weren't as bad as IMS but weren't great either. $4.25 for a hot dog, $5.50 for a burger, $4.25 for a regular drink and $5 for a large although $3 for a big bucket of popcorn wasn't bad. I didn't have any but they had Miller and Coors Light for $7 a can, that didn't stop the "gentleman" two rows ahead of me from getting completely s%#$faced before the end of the race. During the break Ken Schrader was signing some autographs at his T-Shirt stand right outside the grandstands, I got to him before the huge crowd noticed who he was and had time for a quick picture and he signed the t-shirt I bought. During driver introductions Frank Kimmel and Ken Schrader got the loudest applause from the crowds, followed by Karl Weber and Thomas Praytor who got a few enthusiastic "MOOSE"'s shouted out. Praytor's pit stall was right across from out seats, his team didn't actually have a pit box they just had one of those big rolling craftsman tool boxes. As soon as the race started it was clear who had money and who didn't. At least 5 of the cars sounded like they were down a cylinder and Mike Senica's car was so bad he was lapped on lap 4!!! He was shown the black flag 3 times, I assume for not making minimum speed, and was finally called off the track and parked it. Indiana native Mark Lambert actually ran the full ARCA CRA race and took a last minute start and park in the ARCA Race in a second Roulo brothers car. The #6 decal on the car was clearly a borrowed Wayne Peterson Racing #06 decal with the #0 taped over so only #6 was shown. Of the cars out of the race, Lambert, Woodin, Bailey, and Peterson were start and parks, Wayne Edwards was holding steady around 18-22nd place before he went down a cylinder or something and limped around for a few laps before parking it. A.J. Fike had a legitimate problem as well. James Swanson wasn't technically a start and park as he ended up running over 100 laps but he was black flagged several times for not making minimum speed and was in and out of the garage 3 times. The #8 car did not make the start, he pulled onto pit lane during the pace laps and they worked on the car on pit lane for a few minutes before pushing him back to the garage area. Then he randomly came onto the track around lap 140 and was black flagged every time he went by the starters stand for 8 laps in a row before he pulled back off. I heard today that the black flag was for both minimum speed violation and not having a spotter. His teammate #80 Brian Finney also had a legitimate problem. He was having a decent run around 15th-17th it looked like when his car started smoking and he limped around for 2-3 laps before pulling into the garage. The race itself was pretty entertaining, highlights for me were Matt Tifft making a dive from 3rd to 1st just after a restart and the close racing for the lead throught the first 100 laps or so. Justin Boston was completely checking out when he was unable to avoid the stationary Gerhart and the #5's spin. I thought he was done but his crew got him back out but he was unable to keep pace with the leaders. Austin Wayne Self was closing on Jones for a few laps but his car started getting really loose off turn and and Frank Kimmel was actually running him back down for second at the end. All in all I would give the atmosphere a 10/10 and the racing 9/10. IRP is a great track and you won't regret attending an event there. Two unexpected highlights-a drunk guy falling down the stairs on the way back to his seat and a different drunk guy falling down on the sidewalk out of the track on the way back to the parking lot. 13. Grant Enfinger has a solid debut for GMS Racing, in what seems to be a somewhat-friendly move as he takes his number and sponsorship from Team BCR. I'm sure we'll never get the full details, but I just hope this doesn't derail Grant's title run. 14. 02Justin10 posted: 07.26.2014 - 2:16 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Thanks for the race recap! I've always loved that short track (I have never been to a race though.) But NASCAR moving the NNS to the big track and not allowing the trucks to have a race at Lucas Oil Raceway is just plain stupid and clueless on their part. Maybe if ARCA has an event there next year I will go...even with the lengthy trip from Virginia to Indiana. 15. Blame NHRA, not NASCAR, because it's NHRA that refuses to spend the $ to upgrade IRP to meet the required safety standards. 17. The race was moved to IMS for $$ reasons, plain and simple. Speeds at the track were never fast enough to make the lack of safety barriers much of an issue. 18. Also, Wayne Edwards had a oil line fitting for the rear end fail, and he burnt up the rear end. Also, Senica was planned to be a start and park from the start. Wish I could have gone, but I was wore out from a long day working at the big track. Also should not that the race was officially known as the "Scott Get Geared Up 200 presented by Federated Auto Parts." ARCA certainly knows how to make them a mouthful. 19.
