Financial issues prevented Baird from attempting to defend his ARCA champion in 2000 but he returned for the dirt races, looking to defend his win in this race a year earlier. Baird moved up through the field to take the lead just at the one-third mark and led the next 45 laps before Kimmel got by him on lap 78 and held him off from there onward to take the win. This was the first of eight ARCA wins for Kimmel on the Illinois State Fairgrounds mile while Baird recorded the best performance of his six-race campaign in 2000. It was Kimmel's second victory on dirt after winning ARCA's lone visit to the West Virigina Motor Speedway in 1997. Joe Cooksey ran a full-time ARCA campaign in 2000 and turned in his best performance of the season here with a third-place run. Tim Steele makes his first ARCA start on dirt since he won this very race in 1997 on his way to the championship. His penultimate outing without pavement saw him led some laps and bring home a top-10 finish. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
